GREASE-CUP.
Application filed December 20, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE VVATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Hancock and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grease-Cups; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in grease cups.
Heretofore great difficulty has been experienced in employing the common type of grease cup in which a compression member is threaded or otherwise connected to a base member because of the fact that when the compression member is being removed for the purpose of filling, the grease already forced upon the hearing or other object to be lubricated, is drawn therefrom by the formation of partial vacuum within the cup.
It is the object therefore of the present invention to overcome this difliculty, and to this end the grease cup is provided with an inwardly opening valve member which is automatically opened to allow air to enter the cup when the compression cap is being removed.
A still further object resides in the provision of a device of this character which will be simple, strong, eflicient and reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the application, and in which similar reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a grease cup constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the same; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view through this improved grease cup showing the position of the valve member while the compression cap is being removed; and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 8.

grease cup comprises a circular disk 2 from one face of which projects a centrally arranged mpple 3. This nipple 3 is externally threaded at 4: at its outer end and is provided with a bore 5, the upper end of which is enlarged as at 6 to provide a recess for containing grease.
The outer edges of the circular disk 2 are externally threaded for engagement with the internally threaded inner walls 8 of a compression cap 9. This compression cap 9 is provided with an aperture 10 in its closed end 11. Secured in any suitable manner to the inner face of the closed end 11, but here shown by a bolt 12, is one end of a resilient flap 13, the other end of which is disposed over the aforesaid aperture 10, whereby under normal conditions said aperture is closed. This flap 18 may be made of any suitable material but is preferably of leather.
In use, the threaded end l of the nipple 3 is secured to the casing of a bearing or other object sought to be lubricated, and the cup is filled with grease, which is fed to the hearing by turning the compression cap so as to force the grease out through the bore 5. When it is desired to re-fil] the cup, the compression cap is turned in a reverse direction. Owing to the fact that there is a tendency to form a partial vacuum within the compression cap, the resilient flap 13 will be bent downwardly at its free end as seen most clearly in Fig. 4: of the drawings, thereby allowing air to enter the interior of the cup through the aperture 10. It may be seen that this prevents the grease already forced upon the bearings from being withdrawn therefrom.
From the foregoing it may be seen that the objects of the invention have been effectively carried out. However, the drawings simply show one form of this invention, as it is obvious that various changes may be made without departing from the spirit thereof. Hence I do not wish to be limited to the construction herein shown and described other than that set forth in the appended claims.
I claim 1. A grease cup comprising a base member adapted to be connected to an object to be lubricated and having a grease outlet therein, a compression cap connected with said base member and having an aperture therein, and. a reslllent flap secured at one end to the interior of said compression cap and having its free end disposed over said aperture.
2. A grease cup comprising a circular eX- ternally threaded disk having a nipple ex one end to the interior of said compression cap and having its other end disposed over said aperture.
