Referring now to the drawings, wherein, for convenience the platen frame is broken away and but one set of feeding devices shown, 1 indicates the platen frame, a portion of which is formed by longitudinally extending rails 2 and 3, which connect the side pieces 4 and 5 of said frame. The platen roll is shown at 6, and "has its shaft 7 journaled as usual in the side walls of the platen frame, the platen, in the present instance, being constituted by a thin strip of.

The operation of this embodiment of my invention, which should be largely obvious, may be briefly described as follows: It will be'understood that when bar 28 is in the position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, all the pressure rollers will be in engagement with the platen. When, however, said bar is moved endwise to the right,

In a typewriting machine, the combination with the platen frame and the platen roll carried thereby, of a pair of shafts disposed beneath the platen roll, extending in parallel relation thereto and supported at their ends in the platen frame, a set of pressure rollers disposed beneath the platen roll comprising two pairs of rollers, one pair being disposed in advance of the other, independent brackets mounted upon said shafts, each of which supports one of said pressure rollers, a pivotally supported spring having portions thereof engaging each of said brackets and urging the same and the pressure roller carried thereby toward said platen roll, and a slidable member provided with cams one of which engages and swings each of said brackets from the platen roll when said member is actuated.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with the platen frame, and the platen roll carried thereby, a pair of shafts disposed beneath the platen roll extending parallel therewith and supported at their ends. in the platen frame, a plurality of independent brackets mounted upon each of said shafts, and a pressure roller carried by each of said brackets, a pair of rollers being mounted upon one of said shafts, and one of said pairs being disposed in advance of the other, a pivotally supported spring provided with two forked portions, a member of each fork engaging one of said brackets and urging the same toward the platen roll, and a slidable member provided with cams one of which engages and swings each of said brackets from the platen roll when said member is actuated.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with the platen frame and the platen roll carried thereby, of a set of pivotally mounted, independent brackets disposed beneath the platen, a pressure roller carried by each of said brackets, and a forked spring having each of the tines thereof engaged with one of said brackets, and a pivotally mounted support for saidspring.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with the platen frame and the platen roll carried thereby, of a set of independent pressure roll carriers disposed beneath the platen roll, a pair of shafts disposed in parallel relation beneath said platen rolls upon which said carriers are pivotally supported, a spring having oppositely disposed forked portions each of the tines of which engages one of said carriers and urges the same toward the platen roll, and a pivotally mounted bracket for supporting said spring.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with two platen frame and the platen roll carried thereby, of two sets of pressure roll carriers disposed beneath the platen, each set comprising a pair of front and rear carriers, a pressure roller carried by each of said carriers, shafts carried by the platen.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a rotatable platen roll, a plurality of rollers spring-pressed thereagainst, a slid able member movable endwise to force said rollers out of contact with said roll, a pivoted lever movable in a plane at right angles to the axis of said roll for sliding said member to move said rollers, spring means constantly urging said member to free said rollers for pressure against said roll, and means to yieldably lock said lever when operated to slide said member.
32. .In a typewriting machine, in combination, platen roll, pressure rollers therefor, a tine spring adapted to urge the rollers toward the platen roll, a slide cooperae tive with said spring, and means comprislng a pivoted lever whereby pressure applied by' side of its pivot an d comparatively short arm on the other side.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen roll, a pivotally mounted bracket carrying a press tre roller on one side of its pivot and having an engaging portion on the other side thereof, a sprlng adapted to urge the bracket relatively to the platen, and means comprising an endwise movable member and a pivoted lever cooperating therewith, whereby the bracket may be urged in the opposite direction, said lever having arms of different lengths on respectively different sides of its pivot.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen roll, a pivotally mounted bracket carrying a pressure roller on one side of its pivot and having an engaging portion on the other side thereof, a spring adapted to urge the bracket relatively to the platen, means comprising an endwise movable member and a pivoted lever cooperating therewith whereby the bracket may be urged in the opposite\ direction, said lever having arms of different lengths on respectively different sides of its pivot, and means 1 adapted to lock said member in dilferent positions.
