IMPROVEMENT IN TOLS FOR ROUNDING LEATHER.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,575, dated August 1, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LE ROY A. SWEATT, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented an Improved Implement for Rounding Leather; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of thel same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The object of my invention is to provide an instrument or tool with which a perfectly-rou]ided edge or a perfectly-cylindrical rim or strap of leather may be manufactured with ease and facility. The invention consists mainly of a tool or instrument embodying the function of a plane for convex or rounded surfaces having` a hollow semi-cylindrical face or former, through which projects the curved edge of the cutting-blade, secured by a curved shaft to a suitable handle and made adjustable by a setscrew in such a manner that the tool may be operated by the hand steadily along the edge being acted upon.

In the drawing, Figure l is a side View of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view ofthe same. Figs. 3 and 4. are details.

Each part is represented by the same letter whenever it appears in the same drawing.

Usually, in the manufacture of harness and other articles made of leather, when it is desirable to rou'nd the edges-as of traces, or in making parts, as rims, quite round-the article is shaved down with a knife and afterward scraped and smoothed with a piece of glass, and it is exceedingly difficult in this manner to pare the leather to a true or correct surface with the knife without gouging it or cutting the stitches, and the glass is Very apt to cut or gouge out iiat or hollow places also, and' much of the work that would otherwise be made round or have its edges rounded is finished in some other and less elegant manner on account of this difficulty.

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe fully my improved device and the appliances for carrying it into effect.

A is the handle; B, the rod or shaft, terminating in a hollow semi-cylinder, C, through a slot, in which is placed the cutting-blade D inclined to the axis of the semi-cylinder at an angle suitable for cutting smoothly. The blade D is curved on its cutting-edge to correspond with the working face ofthe semi-cylinder, and is provided with a slot, E, through which passes the screw F, by

which it is secured and adjusted in its proper position for takin g off a shaving ofthe desired thickness from the leather. The shaft B is curved, as shown, in order that the hand may iirmly grasp the handle without coming in contact with the edge of the leather operated upon.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

As a new article of manufacture, the tool described, consisting of the handle A, curving-rod B terminating in the semicylinder C, and cutting-blade, all constructed and arranged as described, for the purpose set forth.
