IMPROVEMENT IN BEARINGS AND PACKINGS'.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,558, dated August 1, 1871; antedated July .31, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZA D. MURFEY, of New York, county of New York, State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Bearings and Packings, of which the following is a specification: My invention relates to that class of bearing and packing materials employed as substitutes for the usual metallic bearings and packin gs and my improvement consists of animal skins, retaining the hair or fleece, an d impregnated with plumbago or its equivalent, as described hereafter.
In my patent of July 12, 187 0, No. 105,361,is described a bearing and packing material, consisting of a sheet of leather, paper, or other material, to which, in some instances, a fiocky surface is imparted by means of pickers, so that plumbago or other substance or composition applied to the said surface may penetrate into the latter and become inseparably a part of the same. This mode of imparting a flocky surface to skin orleather requires special mechanism, the employment of which it is the object of my present invention to avoid. I take an animal skin having the hair or fleece upon the same, and to the fiocky side I apply powdered plumbago, or a mixture containing powdered plumbago or its equivalent, and, by any suitable mech anism,work the material among the mass of hair or wool, after which the Whole is compressed to impart a uniform surface to the impregnated side of the skin, which may then be cut into strips or rings, to be employed in
