Description

A UNITED "STATES A SAMUEL M. Meconn, oF SPRINGFIELD, oHIo.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHZMNEVS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,555, dated August `1, 1871.
To all u-hom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. MUGORD, of the city of Springfield, in the Sta-te of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Proof Chinmey-Flues; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in reprooil chimney-dues; and it consists in the application of earthen piping to the interior of said fines, placed one upon the other the entire length ofthe iiues, supported from the base of the lower section, and in such manner as to leave ventilating-Spaces between the outer wall B and the inner Side of the chimney A, all of which will be more fully described in the Specication.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical Section of a chimney-nue with the piping in po- Sition. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line Fig. 3 represents a section of the piping.
In the drawing, A represents a chimney-due of the ordinary construction, in the interior of' which are arranged the sections of piping B placed one upon the other to the upper end of the ue. They may be of any desirable size and thickness to Suit the different sizes of chimneyflues, and may be of any shape preferred.
The object of my invention is to prevent possibility of iire from the cracking ofthe brick walls of the chimneys of buildings, whereby such great danger arises from lire. The cracks are often also produced by the contraction and eX- pansion of the briclework, as well as from the settling of the building. By my invention this difficulty iS entirely obviated, as the piping, being loosely placed in the iiues, is not ai'ected by the settling or cracking of the chimney. The air-spaces G, in the corners of the iiue tend to keep the piping cool and add to the chaught of the chimney, and serve as ventilators to rooms by apertures a a, with` or Without registers. These apertures may be made at any point in a room, either in the fire-place or the walls of the room.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y The combination of the piping B with a chimney-iiue A, ventilator C, and air-ducts a ct, in the manner and for the purpose herein Set forth.
SAMUEL M. Moconn.
