To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES A. Limis'iniiM, a citizen of the United. States, residing at No. 138 Siretford. avenue, Pittsburgh,
13 l3. ill, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lmprovemenis in Car Underframes, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the present invention is to provide a car underframe of light, economieel sml strong conslruction.
Another object of the invention is to pro vicle a car unclerfreme having the center aml draft sills formed and connected together in such a manner as to provirle on opening; for em passage therethro'ogh of e holster memher.
A. further object of the invention is to provide an opening" in the central longitudinal member of'e oer underframe to persuit the passage sherefchrough of e portion oli e holster member Without punching or slotting any of the constituent parts of said central longitudinal member, e. the center .enl lrsfl: sills.
A speciiicohjeciof the invention is to provide 9. car under-fromehering 2. portion of the adjacent ends of thee este and malt sills regime-ed in depth, preferably by: reinovimg" :1 portion thereof or by any other suitable means, said enel portions being so ranged end connected together in such e manner that the eml portion of one sill .35 lakes she place of and compensates -for she reoiueiion in clepth of the enclpor'bion of the other sill, and. as the some time provide for are. opening through ihe sills for the recep= lion of o bolster member. ea; With these and 'ofiher objects in View, the
invention consists in the combination and arrangement of ports, as will. hereinafter he more lully descrihed, shown in the accomg rrying drawings, and particularly pointed n .1 hurtchanges in the form, propori;ion, o is minor details may he macle, Within scope of iiiie elsims, Wli-llOEil departing the sg'lpenclecl claims, it using unolerl from the spirit or sacrificing any of the cal veniages of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference characters refer to like parts, anal in which Figure l is a plan View of e porfiion of a car underframe einhoclying the invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section View on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3is an enlarged detoil plan View of the holster and a portion of the center and draft sills; Fig. 4 is a sectional View of the same onthe line H of Fig. 1 Fig. 5 is a like view taken on the line 55 of Fig.1. Fig. 6 is a sectional VlG'W on the line 6--6 of Fig. 1, and Fl s. 7 and 8 are detail side elevetionel views 0 the draft and center sills respectively.
Referring now in Lleieil so the drawings, 1, 1 indicate the centersills Which are shown in the several figures of the tlrawings of subsiantially channel form in cross section, each comprising e vertical Web plate 2, having a flanged top or compression member 3, ends flanged hofitoin or iension member 4, secured ihereto; but it will he understood fillflli this inven bion is not limited to.the
specific construction of the center sills above described, for it W l he apparent to those skilled in she are that many other forms of spaced center sills may he used, enrl it "will elsoloe understood thai whatis known as a single center sill may he'usecl.
lo the specific embodiment of the invention as shown in the drawings, portions of she ends of the webs 2 0i checenter sills are removeol as at 5; the remaining end porizions 6, 6 extending toward the end of the unclerfreme beyond the bolster '4' and being conneciecl to the draft sills 8, 8 by rivets or other suitable means. I
The cirsft sills 8, 8 are preferably of 2 form in cross section and at their ouier'encls are connected to the end sill 9 by any suitable means. Portions of ifihe inner endsiof izhese dreit sills ere removed as at 10, While the remaining end portions 11,3 11 extend toward the transverse cenierline of the unrlerfreme', heyonrl she holster '7, end are conform an additional tie between the center and draft sills, a cover plate 16 maybe provided which is secured to the top flanges of said sills and may extend for the full length or only a portion of the length of the underfra-me These sills may be also strengthened and tied together by a plate 17 which is secured to the bottom flanges of said sills.
The holster 7 is preferably an integral casting and, besides having a top member 13, has bottom members 18, 18 and webs 19, 19. which bottom members andwebs stop short of the center sills 1, 1, and are con-- meted-together by a center bearing member 20. It will be seen that the top member 13, center brace portion .141, flanges 21, 21 and the center bearing member 20 form openings '22, %2, through which the end portions 6, 6 of the center sills pass; At each end this bolster is provided with flanges 23, 23 for the support of the side sills 24:, 24, bracket :25, and the ordinary roping and jacking portion 28,
in building an underlrame embodying the invent-ion, the holster 7 is positioned on the ends ,6, 6 of the center sills l, 1 and is connected thereto by any suitable means. The draft sills 8,8 are then placed in such a position that they lap a portion of the ends 6, 6 of the center sills and when in such so sition are connected together by rivets or any other suitable means. When the draft sills are in position as just described it-will be seen that the ends 11, 11 bridge the lOfil ster l and are secured to thecenter ills, l, 3..
In the drawings the ends 6, 6 of the center sill are shown passing throughthe holster, and the ends ll, 11 of the draft sills passing over the bolster, but if desired the ends ll, 11 of the draft sills may be passed through the bolster, and the ends 6, 6 of the center sill may pass over the bolster.
The bolster 7has been described as being of a single integral casting, out will be understood that the inventionis not limited to this type of bolster for it will be apparent that a bolster maybe used which comprises a plurality of cast, pressed or rolled parts having a separate top member 13. This top member 1-3 may be continuous from side sill to side sill or may from a point ini'nedite the center and side sills side of the under-trains to a corresponding point on the other side of the under ran" Having thus described my invention, what claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent is 1, The conil'iii'iation in a car nnde" of a central longitudinal member comprising a plurality of connected parts having; portions of their adjacent ends reduced in depths, said parts being arranged in such a manner that the reduced end portion of one of said parts will compensate for the reduc tion in depth of the other of said parts and at the some time define an opening for the reception of a transverse member ot' the on derfreme. v
