CABINET FOR X-RAY APPARATUS.

Our invention relates to an improved apfparatus for controlling the operation of X-ray tubes'and at. the same time protecting the-operator from the injurious influence of the X-rays emanating from the tubes employed.
In carrying out our invention the apparatus used for developing the high tension current required to operate the X,-ray tubes is mounted in a suitable cabinet provided with a switch-board supporting desired controlling apparatus for operating the mechanism in the cabinet. 'The cabinet is also provided with a door for inclosing the switch-board, which door when in its open position serves as a screen for the operator toprevent stray rays passing from the tube. to the operator.

Figure 1 shows in perspective, a view of the complete cabinet; Fig. 2 shows a view of the cabinet with the front side wall removed; Fig. 3 shows an end view of the'cabinet with the door used to inclose the switchboard removed.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
As shown in the drawings, the cabinet 1 contains a rotary converter 2 and a trans, former 3, these devices being separated from the compartment containing the swltchboard by means of a partition 4. .Upon this a the apparatus partition the switch-board 5 is mounted, and upon this switch board,as seen in Fig. 3, a main switch 6 and starting rheostat 7, flashing switch 8, and controlling knob '9 for the potential rheostat,=regulating switches 10 and an ammeter 11, are mounted. have mounted upon its front outer wall con- 4 trol electrodes 13- and adjustable flexible conductors 14, if desired, forconnecting the terminals of the transformer 3 to the X-ray tube to be operated.
The door 12 is constructed in such a manner as to serve not only to inclose the switchboard and the apparatus mounted thereon, but also to serve as a screen or shield for the operator, who preferably stands during the operation ofthe mechanism in close proximity tothe switch-board 5. To secure this desirable result the inner surface of the door 12 is provided'with a covering 15 'of sheet lead, which extends over its entire surface,
assuming the door to be low enough so that theoperator can look over it. To provide a screen for the head of the operator, for.
such a proportion of cabinet, the door 12 is provided wlth an extension slide 16 mounted 1n guideways 17 onthe rear surface of the door so that when the door is open the exstraying from the X-ray tube penetrating through the screen and injuring the operator. The extension 16 may be held in its upper position by means of any suitable catches, not shown.
For large cabinets in which the door 12 is higher than the operator the extension 16 Y may be dispensed with, and for this proportion of cabinet a window 18 is located in the upper portion of the door itself, the opening being closed by a pane of lead glass, as. described above for the extension 16.
We find it desirable in connection with the screen constructed as described above, to provide for certain purposes a fluorescent screen 19, which may be moved by the operator into the path ofthe rays coming to the window 18 or 18 as the case'may' be, which fluorescent screen is preferably so mounted that it may be moved into the field or from I the field .while'the operator is fully protected back of the door 12. A convenient means for operating the screen 19 is indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, consisting in providin supporting cords 20, which pass around 1'0 ers 21 supported by the upper edge of the extension 16, or for' large size of the -move the screen 19, either'into position in front of the window or remove the screen from such position, as desired.
Asa result of the construction described,
the use of a separate screen for protecting the operator is dispensed with and the operators protecting screen and the cabinet containing the operating apparatus are com-.
bined in compact form. The cabinet is preferably provided with rear doors 22 .for permitting examination of the apparatus in the cabinet. I
While we have shown our invention in the particular embodiment herein described, we do not "wish to be understood as? limiting ourselves to this particular construction, as we may employ equivalents of the devices shown, without departing from the spirit of I our invention.
What we claim is: w 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a plurality of walls constituting a part of a cabinet for containing electrical apparatus, and a door for closing the end of said "cabinet, said door comprisingfin part a surface of material opaque to X-rays, a frame mounted upon the door and movable to a position extending above the top of the door,'-and a pane of glass opaque to X-rays.carried by said frame.
2. In adevice ofthe class described, the
combination of a plurality of walls constituting apart of a cabinet for containing 1 electrical apparatus, and a door for closing the end of said cabinet, said door comprising in part a surface of material opaque to, X-rays, vertical guideways carried by the back of the door, a frame slidably mounted in'said guideways so that said frame may extend above the top of the door, and a pane .of glass opaque to X-rays mounted in said frame. v
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a plurality of walls constituting 'a part of a cabinet for containing electrical apparatus, and a door for closing the end of said cabinet, said door comprising in part a surface of material opaque to X-rays', and an extension screen opaque to X-rays carried by said door and movable relatively said door.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a plurality of walls constituting a part of a cabinet for containing electrical apparatus, and a door for closing the end of said cabinet, said door comprising in thereto to project abovethe top of I parta surface of material opaque to X-rays,
a frame iounted upon the door and movable to a position extending above the top of the door, and a pane of glass opaque to X-rays carried by said frame, said frame comprising in part a sheet of material opaque to X-rays.
5. In a device of'the classdescribed, the combination of a plurality of walls constituting apart of a cabinet for containing electrical apparatus, and a door for closing the end of. said cabinet, said door comprising in part a surface of material opaque to -X-rays, and a'window-pane of glass opaque to X-rays carried by said door, a fluorescent screen, means for supporting the screen outside of the door, and devices operated from behind the door for moving the screen vertically opposite said pane or from in front of said pane as desired. 6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a plurality of walls constituting a part of a cabinet for containing electrical apparatus, and a door for closing the end of said cabinet, said door comprising in part a surface of material opaque to X-rays, a frame mounted'upon the door and movable to a position extending above the top of the door, and a pane of glass opaque to X-rays carried by said frame, said frame comprising in part a sheet of material opaque to X-rays, a fluorescent screen, means carried by said frame for supporting the screen in front of the door, and devices operated from behind the door: for moving said screen vertically as desiredrr 7.. In a device of the class'described, the the combination of a,plurality of walls constituting a part of a cabinet for containing electrical apparatus, a door for-closing said cabinet, and an extension screen opaque to X-rays carried by said door and: movable relatively thereto to projectbeyond the edge of said door.

the larger of said compartments for containing apparatus for producing high tension current for X-ray work and the smaller of said compartments for containing switching and controlling mechanism for said apparatus, a vertical switchboard mounted in the smaller compartment on said partition, the side wall inclosing said smaller compartment .consisting of a door hinged to the edge of said front wall, said door being opaque to X-rays, a door inthe rear wall of said larger compartment for affording access to the apparatus therein, and a screen opaque to X-rays and trans parent to light rays carried by the door of the smaller compartment and movable relatively thereto.
10. In a device of the class described, a cabinet having front, rear, side, top and bottom walls, a vertical partition between the front and rear walls "dividing the cabinets into two compartments of unequal size, the larger of said compartments for containing apparatus for producing high tension current for -ray' work and the smaller of said compartments for containing switching and controlling mechanism for said apparatus, a vertical switchboard mounted in the smaller compartment on said partition, the sidewall inclosing said smaller compartment consisting of a door hinged to the edge of said front wall, said door being opaque to X-rays, a door in the rear wall of said larger compartment for affording access to the apparatus therein, and a movable fluorescent screen carried by the door of the smaller compartment.
11. In a device of the class described, the combination of a plurality of walls con stituting a part of a cabinet for containing electrical apparatus, a door for closing said cabinet, an extension screen opaque to X-rays carried by said door and movable relatively thereto to project beyond the edge of said door, said extension screen being transparent to light rays, and a fluorescent screen carried by said extension screen and; movable relatively thereto.
