JOHNB. WORD, OF LATROBE, CALIFORNIA.
LEVEL.
Application filed June 15, 1915.
To all Q0 hom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN B. VVORD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Latrobe, in the county of El Dorado and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Levels, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of levels in which the necessary indication is efiected by the movement of a freely swinging weighted member.
My invention has for its object the provision of a simple, accurate, sensitive and durable level adapted to indicate from all sides or surfaces of the stock,,both the hori zontal and vertical planes, and any angle of deviation therefrom.
To this end my invention consists in the novel level which I shall hereinafter fully describe, by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my level. Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal section on the line 0c-ac of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross section, enlarged, on the line 3/J of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is an elevation of the freely swinging weighted member or spider.
1 is the stock of the level, said stock being of any suitable material and shape, being here shown as of I-beam cross section. At its middle the stock is formed with a socket 2, which opens to each side through sight apertures 3 covered with glass crystals 3, and it is also exposed top and bottom through sight apertures 4:, covered with glass at. Behind the crystals 3, one on each side, is a plate On the outer face of each plate is a dial 6 graduated in degrees throughout the circle. In these plates 5 is rotatably mounted by any suitable delicate bearings, a shaft 7, on each end of which is a hand 8 adapted to play over the dial.
The shaft 7 is the axis of a spider member 9, the rim 10 of which is graduated in degrees which are exposed to view through the sight apertures 4: in the top and. bottom of the stock 1.
The spider member carries a short tube 11, which contains a freely shifting weight 12. This weight, in its best form, is a liquid body, quicksilver being well adapted for the purpose. The tube 11, which is here shown as made of glass, is carried by the spider member by suitable connections, such Specification of Letters Patent.

as the clamp sockets 13. The tube 11 is mounted sufliciently near the periphery of the spider to provide for efficient leverage and said tube is covered lengthwise. A point to be especially noted in this regard is that the tube 11 is covered on an arc of greater radius than that of the spider-rim and it is therefore somewhat straighter. This results in increased sensitiveness of the shifting weight, the liquid globule tending to start quicker upon the change of the level.
The position of the hands 8 is, of course, diametrically opposite to that of the center of gravity of the weight.
In order to provide for any required adjustment the side plates 5 are carried in a mug 1% which is adapted for a slight movement on its axis in the socket 9. of the stock. 7
On the outer face of this ring at one side are rack teeth 15 (Fig. 2) with which engages the thread of a screw 16 set into the stock, and held by asmall set screw 17. By means of the screw 16 the position of the ring 14 in its seat may be adjusted.
18 are spring snap rings to hold ring 14: in its seat, and, as shown, the side crystals 3' are seated in said ring 14L 1 claim 1. A level comprising a stock having a socket with sight apertures to the exterior of both sides and top and bottom of said stock; a dial-plate in each of said side apertures; a spider freely rotatably mounted within said socket and carrying a hand on each end of its axis, playing over said. dialplates, said spider having a rim graduated in degrees and exposed to view through the sight apertures in the top and bottom of the stock; a curved tube carried by said spider; and a freely shifting weight within said tube.
2. A. level comprising a stock having a socket with sight apertures to the exterior of both sides and top and bottom of said freely rotatably mounted by its axis in the side plates and carrying a hand on each end In testimony whereof I have signed my of sald axis, playlng over sand dim-plate, name to thls speclficatlon 1n the presence of sald splder havmg a run graduated 111 detwo subserlhmg wltnesses.
