COMBINATION FLOOR POLISHING AND SANDPAPERING TOOL.
Application filed April 17, 1915. Serial No. 22,214.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda, State of California, have invented a new and useful Combination Floor Polishing and Sandpapering Tool, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a floor polishing and surfacing tool, which can be easily and quickly converted into a sand-papering or polishing tool, the construction being such that the sand-paper or polishing cloth can be instantly removed or replaced, also the clamping arrangement admits of a minimum amount of waste of material. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a perspective view of the tool in the position ready for use, half of the drawing showing the arrangement when used as a sand-papering or polishing device, the other half showing the tool with sand-paper or polishing cloth removed, which is the case when used as a surfacing tool.
The frame A is a metal casting, having the ends formed in the manner as shown at BB, and fluted on the bottom surface as shown in the drawing.
C is a spring retainer, the ends of which fit into the grooves forming the channel in back of B. B.
D is a bracket riveted firmly on the top and in" the center of the spring retainer 0, as shown in the accompanying drawing. The two holes E-E in the turned up por-. tions of D, are used for fastenin a suitable handle, in a manner to allow reedom of movement of the tool.
F is a lever, pivoted to the drop bracket G, which in turn is fastened rigidly to the underside of C, substantially as shown.
H'H are two pieces of wire each fas tened on their outer ends in an eyelet rivet II. These rivets II are securely fas- Specification of Letters Patent.

. name to this specification in the presence of Patented Mar. 14, 1916.
tened into the center of the ends of C. The inner ends of H -H are fastened in the two ears of the lever F in the manner and as shown in the drawing. The mounting of the lever F, in relation to two pieces of wire HH, is such, that moving the lever backward or forward will draw in the ends of the spring C, or release same, according to which way the lever is moved.
J is a piece of backing preferably a piece of carpet cut to fit over the under portion of A and sufliciently long to permit bending over the ends of BB.
K is a piece ofsand-paper cut to match backing J.
.To assemble the tool first place the carpet or backing in. position over frame A, then stretch the sand-paper over the backing, place the spring retainer C in place and release lever F. The tool is now assembled, ready to be used for sand-papering purposes. When the tool is to be used for polishing, remove the sand-paper, but retain the carpet or polishing cloth on the frame A. Whenthe tool is to be used for rough surfacing or scraping, remove the remaining carpet or polishing cloth.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is: v s
In a devlce of the character described, a frarne provided with upturned ends, a spring retainer to engage said upturned ends, a bracket secured to the under side of said retainer, a lever pivoted to said bracket and links connected to said lever and to the outer ends of the spring retainer to expand and contract said retainer.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE A. DENNIS.
