AUTOMATIC TRAIN-SIGNAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14, 1916.
Application fi1ed J'une 15, 1911. Serial No. 633,249.
.To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM J. Coon, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Train- Signals; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying-drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in railway signaling apparatus in which track signals are employed.
Having briefly outlined my improved construction, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which is .illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing: Figure 1 is a detail View of the track signaling mechanism. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken through the mechanism illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig- 3 is a similar sectionshowing the parts in a somewhat different position. Fig. i is a section taken through the upper extremity of the semaphore post.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the view The track employed in this connection is divided into blocks. The rails of each block are connected with feed wires or conductors designated 8 and 9, respectively,,the conductor :8 being connected to the positive pole of the electrical source, and therefore indicated by the plus sign, while. the conductor 9 is connected-with a negative pole, and therefore indicated by the minus sign. The feed wire 8 is connected with one of the track rails, while the feed wire 9 is connected with the other rail, both of said wires being connected with the rail .sections of the same block. One of the rails of the same block is also connected by means of a condnctor 1'5 wit-hen electromagnet 17 inclosed within a casing 18 of a track signal 19. The wire 15 enters the casing 18 through an opening 20 and passes thence to a terminal 21 of the coils of the magnet 17, while, from the opposite terminal 22 of this magnet, a wire 23 passes out of the said casing 18 through the opening 20, thence to the other track rail, thence through the block section of said rail to the wire 13, and thence through said wire to the feed wire .9, completing the circuit, since the rail to which the conductor 15 leads, is connected with the feed wire 8. The magnet 17 is therefore normally energized, and one arm 27 of a bell crank shaped armature 28, pivoted at 29, is made to engage the cores of the magnet 17, whereby an arm 30 of the said armature is made to engage a contact 31, whereby the circuit is closed through an electromagnet 32 in the following manner: A conductor 33 leads from the positive .feed wire 8 through the opening 25 of the casing 18 and merges into a conductor 341: within the said casing, the said conductor leading to a terminal of the electromagnet 32, while, from the op posite terminal 36 of this magnet, a conductor 37 leads to the contact 31, the circuit being completed through the armature 28 and a conductor :24, leading from said armature through the opening 25 of the casing, and merging into the conductor 26 outside of the casing, the latter passing to the feed wire 9, completing the circuit.
Normally, a stop arm 39 and a semaphore signal arm A are in the raised or safe position,'the'stop arm being journaled as shown at B in a post C extending upwardly from the casing .18 and operated from a shaft 40, journaled in the casing 18, as show-n at ll and 42, the inner or concealed extremity of the shaft being equipped with a wheel 48 whose periphery is partially toothed, as shown at 44, the cogged portion of the sald wheel meshing with the pinion 4-5 fast on a shaft 46 to w-hichis also securedja worm wheel 47 engaging a worm 4:8 with which the armaturelshaft 49 of a motor "'50 :is
equipped. The shaft -40 is equipped with :a
grooved pulley D with which a cableE is connected, the. said. cable extending upwardl-y through the hollow post (land being connectedat its :upper extremity with a similar pulley wheel F journaled at G in the 5 mony, through the agency of the motor 40 and its connections, as hereinafter more fully explained.
As illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the wheel 43 has been actuated by the motor to raise the stop arm 39 and the semaphore signal arm A to the upright or safe position, and a lug 51 on the said wheel has acted upon an arm 58, pivoted at 59, to disengage the said arm from a contact 60, thus breaking the circuit through the motor. The wheel 43, however, is held in the adjusted position by virtue of a pawl 61 pivoted at 62 and having a weighted arm 63 on one side of the pivot, its opposite arm terminating in a hook-shaped extremity 3 adapted to engage a lug 2 on the said wheel, this locking pawl serving to maintain the wheel in the position corresponding with the raised or safe position of the stop arm 39 and the semaphore signal arm A as long as the circuit is closed through the magnet 32, since,
in that event, an armature 6 1, pivoted at 65,
has one of its arms 66 in engagement with the cores of the magnet, while the opposite arm 67, carrying-a pin 68, is in such position that the said pin will not unlock the pawl 61. However, when the circuit is broken through the magnet 32, the dropping of the armature to the dotted line position in Fig. 1 will cause the pin 68, carried by the armature arm 67, to act upon the weighted end 63 of the pawl to disengage its hooked end 3 from the teeth of th wheel 43 and allow the said wheel to rotate in response to the ith the contact 60, thus closing the circuit through the motor in the following manner: from the feed wire 8, through the conductor 33, the conductor 34?: a short conductor 70, to the contact arm 58, thence through the contact and a wire 71 to one pole 72 of the motor, thence from the opposite pole '73 through a wire 7 1 to the conductor 37, leading to the contact 31, thence through the arm 30 of the armature 28 to a conductor 24, and thence through the latter and the conductor 26 to the feed wire 9, completing the circuit. When the circuit is closed through the motor, it is also closed through a magnet 75 by way of a conductor 7 6 leading from the wire 71 at a point 77, and passing thence to a Copies of this patent may be obtained for terminal 7 8 of the magnet 75, thence from.
the opposite terminal 7 9 ofsaid magnet through a conductor K to the conductor 74 at a point 80, and thence through the conductor 7 1 to the conductor 37, completing the circuit through the magnet 7 from. this point in the same manner as through the motor, as heretofore explained.
When the magnet 7 5 is energized, it acts upon an armature 81 to move the saidarmature into engagement with the cores of the magnet, whereby a clutch member 82, slidable on a shaft 83, is thrown into engage ment with a cooperating clutch member 84 formed upon the hub 85 ofthe pinion 45,-
meshing with the toothed portion of the wheel 43, as heretofore explained.
Now, if we assume that the stop and signal arms 39 and A'are in the raised or safe position and heldin such position while the wheel 43 is locked by the pawl 61, if a train should enter a block 6, with which the signal. mechanism '19 is electricallyconnected, as heretofore explained, the current would be short circuited between the tworails 5, thus breaking the circuit through the magnet 17, and as soon as this circuit is broken, the arm 30 of the armature 28, which is weighted for the purpose, will drop from engagement with the contact 31 to engage ment with a contact 89, whereby the circuit will be completed through a red or danger light R, mounted upon the upper extremity of the post C.
Having thus described my invention, what I I claim is:
In an apparatus of the class described, the combination. with an arm, of a winding drum, a flexible connection between saidarm and drum, a disk secured upon said drum, a
lug secured upon one side of said disk, apiv-L oted pawl, one end of which is adapted to engage one side of said lug, and the other end of which is weighted, a i electro-magnet, a pivoted armature therefor, and a. projection upon said armature constantly in engagement with said weighted extremity and adapted to raise the weighted end of the pawl when the armature falls upon-the deenergization. of the electro-magnet.
In testimony whereof I affix-my signature in presence of two witnesses.
