Among the important objects of the invention are the avoidance of the use ofsolder or postsjn the, link structure, and the v provision of a construction wherein the constituent parts may be formed from-umform shaped blanks.

Another object is to insure an unbroken I front and rear link surface to accommodate ornamentation upon the front face, and to insure comfort to the wearer by reason of the provision of the smooth back face.

A further object of the invention is to provide a structure of the character set forth so arranged that longitudinal pull upon the parts will not be likely to result in acoldental disengagement of the links from each other while at the same time the structure is of such nature that these links may be readily disconnected from each other when desired, for the purposes hereinbefore set forth. 7

Further objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which now follows.

In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is an outer face view of a part of a chain constructed .in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view upon line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view upon line H of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is across sectional view upon line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of a link plate hereinafter described. Fig. 7 is a detailed perspective view of a link loop, and Fig. 8 is a detailed plan view illustrating the manner in which the links are disconnected from each other.

Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.

1 The endless chain forming the subject matter of the present invention is made up of link plates 5, and link loops 6. The link plates comprise inner side walls 7 having inturned flanges 8 along their edges, and outer side walls 9 having inturned flanges 10 along their edges. walls are connected at one end of the link plate by fixed tie webs 11. At their opposite end these inner and outer side walls are,

when the structure is completed, tied-t5 gether by a movable tieweb 12, the free end of which is bent to form a hook extension 13 and the terminal end of which hook extension is provided with a, preferably, circular tongue 14. The hook 13 and the tongue 14 are forced inwardly to engage in a correspondingly shaped recess 15, formed in the inner side. 7, when the parts are in their assembled position. Springs 16 are arranged within the link loops and bear between the tie web 11,- and one end of said link-loop. The movable webs 12 are hooked into engagement with the opposite ends of the link loops, and in this manner a chain of any desired length may be produced. By virtue of the construction herein shown and described the several objects of the invention hereinbefore outlined are efliciently achieved. Smooth front and rear faces are provided for the link plates and ,the use of solder and posts is rendered unnecessary. The links may be-moved or replaced quickly without injury to the structure, while at the same time the shape of the tongue 14 is such that longitudinal strain upon the parts can not result in the accidental disengagement 85 link, the parts are brought to'the position cludes'within its purview such changes as come within the spirit of the appended claims.

Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. A device of the character described comprising inner and outer elongated loop members slidable with relation to each other, a releasable part formed with one of said members, saidreleasable part comprising a headed member lying in alinement with and flush with that part of said member with which said headed member engages, the loop member which carries said releasable part having an opening formed therein, into which said headed member may be forced by a bodily lateral movement.

2. In a chain of the character described, a link member comprising inner and outer side walls, an integral tie web uniting said side walls at one end of the link member and a releasable tie web connecting the side walls at the opposite end of the link memher, said releasable tie web terminating in a bent portion which lies throughout its length in alinement with one of the side walls of said link member and the free end of which terminates in a head enlarged in the plane of said bent portion of the tie web said last named side wall being provided with a correspondingly shaped opening into which the enlarged end of said web plurality of link loops slidably disposed in said link plates, said link plates comprising spaced side walls between which said link loops move said link plates comprising releasable tie webs which pass through said link loops and the free ends of which are bent to hook formation and lie in alinement with and flush with the side walls of the link plates the free ends of the said webs being enlarged and the adjacent side walls being provided with a correspondingly shaped opening into which the enlarged end of said tie web may be forced by lateral; thrust thereagainst.
