MULTIPLE PUMP-CONTROLLING DEVICE.
masher.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORACE S. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Multiple Pump- Controlling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to governingde vices, more particularly for motor driven'air compressors employed on electrically propelled cars. 1
Various devices have heretofore been proposed for eifecting the simultaneous operation of a plurality of pump governors to cause the motor driven pumps to start and stopworking in synchronism.
The principal object of my invention is to provide improved means for efiecting the simultaneous operation of a plurality of pump governors.
In the accompanying drawing, .the single figure is a diagrammatic view of an electric motor driven compressor equipment for two cars, showing my improvement applied thereto.
The pump governor shown in the drawing is somewhat similar to the construction covered by Patent No. 834,274 of E. H. Dewson, dated October 30, 1906, and comprises a cyl inder 1 having a piston chamber 2 containing a piston 3, subject on one side to the pump pressure admitted thereto through pipe 4-. The piston 3 has a piston rod 5 carrying a double contact member 6 and surrounding the piston rod is a spring 7 the pressure of which is adapted-to be regulated by means of an adjustable .plate 8. Adjacent to the cylinder 1 and surrounding the piston rod 5 is a coil 9 of an electro-magnet. In the closed position, the contact member 6 connects contacts 10 and 11, the contact 11 being connected by wire 12' with the main conductor 13 and the contact 10 with one terminal of coil 9. The other terminal of "coil 9 is connected by wire 14 to the motor of the motor compressor 15 and a wire 16 con-- nects the other terminal of the motor with main conductor 17. Each motor compressor Specificatioirof Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. ta, rare.
Application filed March 11, 191%, Serial No. 824,036.
As so far described, the operation is as follows: When the pressure in the main reservoir 18 and in the piston chamber 2 has reduced to a predetermined minimum degree, according to the adjustment of the regulating spring ,7, the spring 7 forces the contact member 6 into engagement with the contacts 10 and 11. The circuit through the coil 9 and the compressor motor is thus closed and the energization of the electromagnetdraws the armature 20 inwardly with a jerk, thus insuring immediate and complete engagement of thecontacts. As the main reservoir pressure increases by operation of the compressor, the pressure on the piston 3 also increases until the pressure is sufficient to overcome the pressure of the spring 7 and the holding power of the electro-magnet, then the contact member is moved out by the piston 3 and the contacts are separated. The electro-magnet is then denergized, so that the full force of the fluid pressure in piston chamber 2 opposes the spring pressure only and a quick opening movement of the contacts is thereupon effected. According to my improvement the terminal 10 of the compressor governor on one car is connected by a wire 21 to the terminal 10 of the governor on another car. With this connection, when the pump pressure has reduced to a degree at which one of the pump governors cuts in, the compressor motor circuit on thatcar is closed in the usual way as heretofore described and in addition, a circuit is also completed from the main conductor 13 through wire 12, contact 11, contact member 6 and contact 10 on said car, through wire 21 to. contact 10 on the other car and thence through coil 9, wire 14, the compressor motor, and wire 16 to the main conductor 17. The electro-magnet of the compressor governor on the other car is thus energized and thus operates to draw the armature 20 inwardly and thereby the contact member 6 to close the circuit through contacts 10 and'll, so thatcurrent is supplied to the motor compressor on this car from the main conductors simultaneously with the starting of the motor compressor on the first car. If desired, a second wire 22 may be'connected across the wires 14 of the two cars, so as to provide a direct circuit without the necessity of completing the circuit through the motor of the second car. In other words, when'the wire 22 is employed, and one of the compressor governors cuts in, both coils 9 are in circuit in parallel.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination with two electric pump governors each comprising an electric switch for controlling-the pump motor circuit and an electro-magnet adapted upon energization to exert its ower to close the switch, of a wire connecting the electro-magnet of one pump governor with the electromagnet of the other pump governor.
2. The combination with two electric pump governors each comprising an electric switch for controlling the pump motor circuit, a piston subject to pump pressure for operating said switch, and an electromagnet in series with the pump motor and exerting its pull upon energization to close the electric switch, of a wire connecting the electro-magnet of one pump governor with that of the other pump governor.
3. The combination with two electric pump governors each comprising an electric switch for controlling the pump motor circuit, a piston subject to pump pressure for operating said switch, and an electromagnet having a coil connected in series the pump motor circuit and adapted when energized to assist in closing the switch, of a wire connecting the electro-magnet. coil of one pump governor with that of the other to thereby effect the energization of the electro-magnet and the closure of the electric switch of the last mentioned governor.
4. The combination with two electric pump governors each including an electric switch for opening and closing the pump motor circuit and an electro-magnet having a coil connected in the pump motor circuit and adapted upon energization to assist in l closing the switch, of a wire connecting similar terminals of the electro-magnet coils to thereby effect the energization "of one coil upon energization of the other.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set myhand.
HORACE S. CLARK.
