GEOEGE I. WEBSTER, JR., OF GROSS BRIDGE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON AND HAV-PRESSES.
To all uhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. WERsTER, Jr., of Cross Bridge, in the county of Maury and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton and Hay-Presses, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying' drawing and to theletters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this .specifica-tion.
The nature of iny invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a press for pressing cotton, hay, tobacco, and other articles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- A represents a piece of timber placed under and connecting the horizontal side beams B B. The bed-sill B is also supported by said side beams; and from these beams extend upward four standards, C G, two mortised in each beam and fastened at the top by a cross-piece, Cf, and bolts, leavin g asix-inch space between the standards at each end. D D are the side doors of the bale-box, pivoted at their lower edges so as to fall downward. D D( are the end doors, having a space six inches square cut ont in their upperA ends to allow the head-block E to come below the lining on the standards, so that the swelling of the bale will not touch the lining. These end doors are so arranged that they may be either loosened or taken out. E is the upper box, having stationary sides. G is a beam connecting the two cross-pieces C C', and should be provided with rollers for passing the cords over that draw np the head-block. In the ends of this beam G and in the ends of the timber A are placed two iron bars, H H, notched on both sides, as shown. The head-block E works in the spaces between the standards C G, and at each end thereof is attached a casting, I, through which the notched bars II pass, said bars also passing through loose castings Il, for a purpose that will be presently described. On the side of the press is arranged a windlass, J, with ropes a for hoisting the headblock E 5 and when the same is raised bars K K areplaced in the spaces between the standards C C to hold it up while preparing the press. For pressing' I use two levers, L, with notched castings M on one end to prevent slipping. The castings I are brought up to a suitable point and pins b b inserted in the same to catch in the teeth on the bars H and prevent the castings from moving upward. A two-foot link, d, is hooked onto said casting, and a one-foot link, d', onto the casting I on the end ofthe head-block. The lever` L is then passed through the link d and hooked into the link el. The lever is then raised as far as possible, when other pins, b b, are inserted in the castings I to prevent the head-block from slipping up. As the lever is raised the pressure is on the castings I and the pins in the castings I', the more pressure is put onthe more steady it will be, for the pins b b are set at an :angle of forty-five degrees to the notched bars, these notches being one-quarter of an inch deep. In pressing small packages one-foot links are used altogether. The end doors D are used when pressing cotton or hay, but if smaller packages are desired they must be removed and a door suiting the size of the package be substituted.
If it is desired to press anything in a box the doors must be dispensed with. Thus it will be seen that I can press any sized package with this press 5 also, that the head-block can be brought clear down to the bed-sill, which is a great advantage.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
The combination of the double ratchet-bars H, head-block E, castings I I', pawls b, links d cl, and levers L, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
