To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOI'IAN PARTMANN, a subject of the King of Hungary, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sewing-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has for its object toprovide a compact sewing machine in which the lever has two arms extending from its fulcrum in the same general direction, one of the arms being connected with the driving shaft by a link and cam, and the other arm serving to operate the needle bar.
Another object of the invention is to. pro-' vide improved adjustable means for operating the feeder from the operating shaft.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following specification in which the preferred form of my invention is disclosed.-
In the drawings similar reference char-- acters refer to similar parts in all the views in which Figure 1 is a view showing in elevation the sewing machine provided with my improvement; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view illustrating the mounting of the feeder, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view disclosing the mounting of the rocking member which carries the arm to which the feeder is secured.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the sewing machine is provided with an arm 5 to which there is fulcrumed a lever 6 at 7. This lever 6 has an'arm 8 to which is articulated at- 9 a link 10, this link 10 being articulated at 11 to the needle bar 12, the needle bar moving in the bearings 13 in the customary manner. The other arm 14 of the lever 6 which extends in the same general direction from the fulcrum 7 as does the arm 8 has a journal 15 which is rounded longitudinally of its axis as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Engaging the journal 15 there is a bearing 16 mounted on a link 17. It will be understood that the journal 15 will rock on a horizontal axis when the lever 6 rocks on its fulcrum 7. The link 17 has a bearing 18 in which is disposed a cam 19 on the driving shaft 20, the driving shaft 20 being journaled in the bearings 21 and 22 in the frame of the sewing machine. It will be seen that with this construction, a very Specification of Letters Patent.

Arranged on the driving shaft 20 there is a rotary hook 23 which cooperates with a needle 24 mounted on the needle bar 22, the
said hook 23, the needle 24 and a feeder 25 constituting the stitch forming mechanism. The feeder 25 is operated by an arm 26 having a body 27 with extensions 28 spaced apart, each of these extensions having an opening 29 in which is disposed a bearing 30. Disposed between the extensions 28there is a rocking member 31 having a bearing 32 at one end and an opening 33 in which a bearing 34 is disposed at its other end, this hearing 34 being held yieldingly extended by a spring 35 which engages the inner end 36 of the opening and the bearing member 34. The bearing member 34 has a stud 37 around which the spring 35 is disposed. Between the bearing 32 and one of the bearings 80 there is a ball 38 and between the bearing 34 and the other bearing 30 there is a ball 39. In this manner the arm 26 is movably mounted'on the rocking member 31, the said rocking member 31 being movably mounted on the frame40 of the sewing machine in a. similar manner, the rocking member 31 being disposed between the extensions 41 which have openings 42 in which bearings 43 are disposed, the rocking member 31 having a bearing 44 at one end and an opening 45 extending through the other end, there being a bearing 46 in the opening 45 which is held yieldingly extended by the spring 47, the spring 47 engaging the inner end 48 of the opening 45 and pressing against the bearing 46. there being a stud 49 on the bearing 46 which is disposed within the coil of the spring 47. A ball 50 is dis posed between the bearings 44 and one of the bearings 43 and another ball 50 is disthe rotation of the shaft 20, the cam 55 will operate the arm 53,-which will by means of the slotted arm 51, rock the member 51 to operate the arm 26 to which the feeder 25 is secured, the arm 26 at the feeder 25 being held in position by the fingers 56 and 57 on the arm 26, the finger 56 being disposed at the top of the bearing 54 and the finger 57 engaging the bottom of the said bearing 54.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
1. In a sewing machine, two bearings spaced apart, balls at the said bearings, a rocking member having opposite bearings engaging the balls, resilient means for holding one of the said opposite bearings yieldingly extended, the rocking member having two additional opposite bearings, resilient means for holding one of the said additional opposite bearings extended, a feeder arm having'bearings spaced apart, balls disposed between the bearings in, the feeder arm and the last mentioned hearings in the rocking member and means foroperating the rocker member.
2. In a sewing machine, a driving shaft having a cam, an arm having a bearing in which the cam is disposed, two bearings spaced apart, a rocking member having a channel extending through one end and a bearing in its other end, a bearing in the channel, resilient means for holding the last bearing extended, balls engaging the bearings at the ends or" the rocking member and the first mentioned bearings, there being an additional bearing in one end of the rock ing member and an additional opening at the other end of the rocking member, a bearing disposed in the last mentioned opening, resilient means for holding the last mentioned bearing yieldingly extended, a, second arm having bearings spaced apart, balls disposed between the bearings in the second mentioned arm and the last mentioned bearings in the rocking member, a slotted arm secured to the rocking member, means carried by the first mentioned arm, and adjustably secured to the slotted arm at its slot, and a feeder operable by the second mentioned arm.
