y HENRY E. COOLEY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN PAPER GOODS COMPANY, OF MONTCLAIR, NEW JERSEY, A; CORPORATION 0F NEW JERSEY.
Application led February 27, 1912. Serial No. 680,291. i
To all 'whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY B. CooLnY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Drinking-Cup-Sterlliz` ing Machine, of which the following is a' specification.
My invention relates to the classpf machines above mentioned, and an object of my invention, Aamong others, is to provlde a machine by 4means of which drinking cups may be thoroughly sterilized in the process .of manufacture and for immediate packing and to producedurable cups with strong, secure and smooth seams and that are perfectly water tight and sanitary.
A' form of machine embodying the invention and in the construction and use of which the objects above set out, aswell as others, may be attained is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a machine embodying my invention with parts cut away to show construction. Fig. 2 is a view of the machine in front elevation with parts broken away to show construction and with parts of the folding mechanism shown in Fig. 1 removed.
ln the accompanying drawings the numeral 5 denotes the frame of my improved machine that may be of any suitable form and composed of any proper material. Upon this frame are supported devices for folding the blanks and for forming the joints. This mechanism may be of any desired construction, the machine herein illustrated including a gumming roll 6 with the supporting roll 7 co-acting therewith, and to which the blanks are supplied by mechanism of any satisfactory construction. lt may be brieiy stated that in the machine herein shown the blanks are presented folded crosswise at about the center to the gumming rolls by which gum is applied to the opposite projecting edges of the lower ply of each blank after which the blanks are delivered to further folding mechanism including an upper feed roll 8 and a'lower feed roll 9. rIhese rolls are so constructed that the blank will pause in its travel for a suicient length of time to enable the projecting edge of the lower ply of each blank to be folded over the edge of the upper ply and caused to adhere to the upper surface Specication of Letters Patent.

of said upper ply. This operation is performed as by folder blades 10 suitably mounted and operated in connection with a 12 and operated as by means of an arm 13 60 and rod' 14. From the folding device above described the folded blanks Iare delivered Further and detailed description of the folding mechanism isA deemed unnecessary herein and reference -is hereby made to my co-pending application filed January`29th, 1912, of S. No. 673,959 for such understanding as may be further desired regarding this mechanism.
Feed belts 16-17 are carried upon belt supports 18-19 suitably mounted in the frame of the machine and in such position that the blanks are delivered from the feed rolls 15 to and between said belts. The 75 large belt roll 20 is so located that the blanks will be delivered therefrom into the throat between the presser roll 21 and heating cyl-A inder 22, which travel closely together, the pressure being regulated as by means of adjusting screws 23 engaged with the bearin s of the roll in any suitable manner. A sha low tank 35 is formed in the throat between said roll and cylinder as by means of flanges 24 on each endl of the roll closely fitting 85 against the ends of the cylinder, the surfaces of the roll and cylinder forming the sides of the tank as plainly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
A reservoir 25 for paraffin is mounted 90 on the frame of the machine from which a trough 26 delivers to the tank just above described, a valve 27 being employed td regulate the flow of paraiiin to the tank.r This reservoir and the cylinder 22 are 95 heated in any desired manner, as herein shown steam being conveyed through a pipe 28 to the reservoir 25, this steam passing through a steam jacket around the reser- A v oir and being conveyed through a connection 29 to the cylinder 22, this connection being made in any well known manner to permit rotation of the cvlinder, and as plainly shown at the other end of the cylinv. der in Fig. 2 where the connection 30 is l0 with a pipe 31 delivering to a cylinder 33 that together with a presser roll 32 constitutes another set of devices for acting upon the blank in a manner to be hereinafter described. From the cylinder 33 the steam 11 passes through a discharge pipe These cylinders and'rolls and in fact all of' the parts hereinbefore describedI may be rotated in any suitable manner, Vand thev cylinder 33 and roll 32 are. rotated to pass blanks to counting mechanisml to be hereinafter de scribed, the blanks falling through space from between' the cylinder 22 and the roll A 21. 4Each' of the presser rolls 21 and 32 are covered with some yielding material 36,
as felt, by means of which substantially all flow of parain is prevented between the Receptacles 39 are located underneath the ends of the roll 32 and cylinder 33 to receive para'in that may flow over the ends of the tank between the roll 21 and cylinder 22 dripping on to flanges on the ends of the roll 32 and thence into the receptacles, spouts conveying paraili'n from the receptacles 39. A receiver 41 lsrotatably mounted in position to receive the blanks 37 from the roll and cylinder 32-33, this receiver having compartments 42 formed by pins 43, the receiver being rotated as by means of a pawl 44 mounted on an arm 45 pivoted on the shaft 46 of the receiver and acting in connection with a ratchet 47 secured to said shaft or tothe receiver. The arm is actuated by a rod 48 pivotally connected ,with an actuating slide 49 mounted upon the shaft 50 of a toothed counter 51. This toothed counter 51 has a circular flange 52 projecting from one side, with openings 53 through said ange,
-ange.
A counter arm 56 mounted on the shaft 50 of the toothed counter and carrymg'at one end a counter pawl 58 is connected at the opposite end by a rod 59 with a counter cam 60 mounted on a cam shaft 61-this cam shaft also having -secured thereto an actuating slide operating cam 62, located to Strike a roll 63 on a slide rod 64.
While I have shown and described hereirl` two sets of presser rolls and heating cylinders, these sets may be varied in number to any degree, and the means for driving the several partsv not herein specifically shown will suggest themselves to the ordinary mechanic, andfor this reason detailed description and illustration of such partshave been omitted.
In .the normal operation of the device the delivery of paraliin through the trough 26 will be so regulated that the tank paratrasos' tially formed by the flanges 24 will be kept lled -with melted paraln to the required j amount, this delivery trough 4bein located to deliver the paraffin on to the joints of the blanks that pass from between the belts cylinder 22, the latter serving to thoroughly heat said blanks. 1
The mucilage applied by the mucilage roll 6 is, by the actlon of this heating cyl- 1nder, thoroughly softened, and the pres sure between 'the cylinder and roll upon the 80 joint or seam presses the folds firmly in contact and causes the mucilage to exert its full adhesive qualities in securing the joint.
The joint', as the blank passes t rough the box containing the parain, is completely sealed andthis compression -of the heated jolnt together with the heated parafiin and mucllage insures a strong and water tight jolnt sufficient to thoroughly withstand the .use to which the cups are intended to be The blanks 'as they pass between the rolls and heated cyhndr are thoroughly pressed, the mucllage.-l 1s softened and uniformly spread to form a smooth joint, and the paraliin is uniformly spread over the entire blank, completely covering the joint, both the mucllage and paraffin being condensed with a result that a thoroughly sterilized cup is produced having a firm and watertight joint and covered with a uniform layer of paran. The layer of paraffin and the heat to which the blank is Subj ected thoroughly sterilize it, and the finished cup is not required to be handled, the entire operation, after the blanks are placed in the machine to be acted g upon by the folding mechanism, being mechanically performed.
' lt is essential th it the arain shall not be burned, as this would jectionable in a drinking cup and to avoid such a result I provide a safety valve 65 by means of which the pressure and consequently the `heat supplied to the reservoir 25 and the tank 35 between the rolls may 115 be regulated, a gage 66 bemg located for use in regulating .the safety valve 65.
While I have shown and described herea preferred form of apparatus embodyingmy invention, this may be altered to a 12o greater or lesser degree without departing from the spirit and intent of the invention.
I claim- 1.
