. to maintain a substantial uniformity of temperature and incidentally to preventthe excessive use of fuel.
It is" particularly useful in connection with hot Water heating systems for incubators, brooders and the like, in which a close regulation of temperature is necessary.
The primary object is to utilize the temperature of the waterleaying the heater for regulating directly a check damper and indirectly a draft damper controlling the combustion chamber. v
Another object is to provide a construction having a minimum number of parts and adapted to be assembled with ease, through which any movement of the check damper beyond a predetermined point is positively and directly transferred to the draft damper controlling the combustion chamber, so that the regulation by the check damper shall be accompanied by a further and more sensitive regulation by the draft damper.
Other objects and uses will appear from the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a heater and a part of ahot water circulating system connected thereto embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section on line 2-2 Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3-3 Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an elevation, partly in section, of the damper for the combustion chamber and its supporting member. Fig. 5 is a view, partly in section, of the regulating device, showing the manner in which it operates the check damper.
In order that my invention may be clearly understood, 1 have shown an upright boiler 1 as provided with a combustion chamher 2 and a water jacket 3' surrounding th combustion chamber and adapted to be connected to the water circulating pipes 4 and --5 forming a part of a heating system. The water jacket 1s closed at the top by apartition wall 6 having a central opening 7- therethrough leading from the combustion chamber -3 to a. smoke chamber 8. formed by a hollow top section 9'. The
section 9 is provided with. an outlet -10-- and a check port ll-, the outlet 10 adapted to be connected to a suitable chimney, not shown, while the check port --11 18 provided with a suitable check damper -12 hinged at its upper edge at -13 to the section '-9'-. The top of the section 9, which is preferably flat, is
formed with a central opening -'-1 4ehaving a lid or closure -15 iitted therein and normally closed. The opening -7-in the upper end of the fire-box 2 is provided with a movable closure or draft damper 16-' having a central aperture 18 through which a rod -19 and its surrounding sleeve 20 loosely extend. The rod --'19-' is threaded for a portion of its length on each end, and the sleeve is rigidly confined thereon bythe Washers -21- and the nuts 22-, the washers 21 serving to limit the movement of the disk 16.v
The rod 19 extends upwardly through a plate 23 and has its end upset to prebody thereof and are provided with bearings 24 adapted to be removably positioned in the hook eyes -25- and 26- of ayoke 27. The yoke 27- is pivoted by apin -28 to a projection -29- extending downwardly from the top section 9 through an opening -30 in an arm 31 extending from the central part of the yoke 27. The arm 3l is provided 'upon its end with a comparatively large flat plate -32 extending substantially parallel with and in proximity to the check damper 12 and of such weight that it will not quite balance the yoke 27 and the draft damper 16- supported thereby, so that the opening 7 is normally closed by the draft damper l6 but said damper-will be raised therefrom when a slight pressure is'exerted upon the plate 32. The plate 32 is provided with two ears 33- and34: projecting from the front face thereof and having openings therein to receive a rotating rod 36- having a circular disk 37- integral, therewith and projecting to a greater distance from the face of the plate 3f2' than the ears, 33- and 34-- and constitutes an anti-friction bearing between the plate 32 and the damper -12. l/Vhen the check damper 12' is near closing point, it contacts with the disk -37 and its weight is transferred to the plate -32 thus overbalancing the yoke 27 and the parts supported thereby and raises the draft damper 16 allowing free communication between the fire-pot 2 and the smoke chamber. By allowing the draft damper -16- to slide upon the sleeve -20' there is never any strain upon the valve itself as it will shift until the tion I It is apparent that the device so far explained will be readily operated by any means which raises and. lowers the damper 12, and I have shown the same as auto maticaliy operated by a regulator -3S in direct communication with the outgo ng pipe -4- of the heater by means of a pipe --39 and a T joint 40'.
The regulator 38 is provided with a chamber 41- within which is a closed cylindrical corrugated bellows 42 formed of thin sheet metal, and filled with a volatile fluid as oil, highly sensitive to slight changes in the temperature of the water rising in the pipe -39- Upon the upper side of the bellows -e2- rests a member "-43- extending upwardly through the wall of the regulator -38- and provided with a knifeedge bearing contacting with a plate &dof a rocking member l5 pivotally mounted upon the regulator -38 by means of the pin extending through the member and mounted in the ears iti and. projecting from the reguiator -38, The rocking member i5- is provided with an opening i8- through which extends a metal bar 49 having upon one end a ball -50 and connected at its other end to projection 51" upon the damper -12- by means of a bar 52-- and bolts -53- and 54,-, the bar i8- resting directly upon the plate -e4iand is held in contact therewith by a screw -59 extending downwardly through a threaded opening in the rocking member t5-, The plate 23-- is provided with upwardiy extending projections 56- and -57- connected by a bolt 58 forming a handie for readily lifting the plate --23 from the hook eyes -25- and -2ithe yoke and thereby removing the draft damper 16 and its supporting frame from the smoke chamber.
The operation is as follows: As the temperature of the water in the outgoing pipe of the heater rises, the volatile fluid in the bellows er-2 expands causing the top oi plate 32 contacts with the top secthe bellows to rise and forcing the member 43- upward against the plate 44 thereby rocking the member 45 upon its pivot,-55-- and raisingthe end ofthe bar 49- connected indirectly with the projection -51- such connection being made rigid by means of bar'.52 and the nuts -53- and 54. As the end of the bar 49 rises, it draws along with it the check damper 12 allowing thevpla te "32 to swing upward, whereby the draft damper is lowered to close the opening 7- and shut 0d the outlet from the combustion chamber, whereby the combustion therein is decreased, the temperature of the water in the outgoing pipe decreases, the volatile fluid contracts, the rocking member as rocks back, the check damper l2 tends to close, the plate -32- is forced downwardly raising the yoke -2'7, the plate 8 -23 supported thereby, and lifting the draft damper 16- from the opening 7 whereby the combustion in the fire pot is increased and the temperature of the water raised.
By means of the bail '50 the tempera-- ture of the water may be automatically regulated at different predetermined degrees,.the weight of the ball according to its distance from the pivot -55- tending either "to overcome the pressure caused by the expansion of the volatile fluid, or at least to partially counteract it. o
lVhat 1 claim is:
1. A heater having a check damper and a draft damper, means for operating check damper, and means attached to wall of the heater and in contact with the check damper for transferring movement from the check damper to the draft damper it in reverse form,
2. A heater having a combustion chamber and a smoke chamber, a draft damper the combustion chamber and a check da per for the smoke chamber, means witl the smoke chamber and attached to a thereof for transferring movement from the check damper to the draft damper in verse form, and means for operating check damper,
3. A water heater having a check dam"; "1 pivoted to a wall thereof, a draft damp for the combustion chamber slidably mounted upon an upright rod, means for supporting said rod comprising a yoke pivoted from T1 a wall of the il@2t't61,311 arm projecting fr m, said yoke and contacting with the che damper, and means for operating the checir damper.
4. A water heater having a check damper pivoted to a wall thereof, a draft damper for the combustion chamber slidably mounted upon an upright rod, a supporting member pivoted to a wall of the heater and hav ing one end connected to said rod, the other so end adapted to contact with the check said draft damper pivoted to a Wall of the heater and having a lost motion connection with said draft damper, means for operating the check damper, said supporting member being operated by the movement of the check damper to open and close the draft damper.
6. A fluid heater having a draft damper,
a stem upon which said damper is mounted, a transversely extending bar connected to said stem,-a pivoted member having one end in the form of a yoke, the arms of said yoke supporting sai bar upon opposite sides of its connection to said stem, and means causing said member to move about its pivot to open and close the draft damper.
7. A heater for a fluid circulating system comprising a combustion chamber and a smoke chamber, a draft damper separating said chambers, a check damper for the smoke chamber, a stem upon which vsaid draft damper is mounted, a transverse bar operably connected to said stem, a pivotally supported member having one end in the form of a yoke, the arms of said yoke supporting said bar upon opposite sides-of its connection to said stem, the opposite end of said member operated by the check damper to move said member about its pivot to open and close the draft damper, and means for operating the check damper in accordance with the temperature of fluid in" the circulating system.
8. A heater'for a fiuidcirculating system com rising a combustiop chamber and a smo e chamber, a draft damper separating said chambers, a check damper for the smoke chamber, a stem upon .which said draft damper, is mounted to slide back and forth within predetermined limits, a transverse bar operably connected to said stem,- a pivotally supported member havin one end in the form of a yoke, the arms 0 said yoke supporting said bar upon opposite sides of its connection to said stem, the opposite end of said member operated by the check damper to move said member about its-pivot toopen and close the draft damper, and means for operating the check damper in accordance Withthe temperature 0t fluid in the circulating system.
