OOUPLING.
Patented Mar. 7, 1916.
Application filed April 23, v1915. Serial No. 23,497.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FOSTER J. BORDEAUX, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to couplings, and more particularly toga coupling for an air pump and the valves of pneumatic tires.
Its object is to provide a coupling for this purpose which can be quickly and easily placed in position over the valve stock and valve of the tire, and when in operative position eectively prevents leakage of the air.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate an embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved co-upling; Fig. 2 is a bottom view thereof; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3,` Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section onthe line 4-4, Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a sectional view on a plane at right angles to Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6, Fig. l; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the shell members; Fig. 8 is a rear elevation of the coupling with the pipe removed; Fig. 9 is a perspective view of another of the shell members; and Fig.y 10 f is a perspective view of thehead.
The casing or shell of the coupling consists of the two members A and B, rigidly fastened together and preferably cylindrical as shown. The Outer or cap member A has a skirt A extending part way around its periphery and provided with a pair of flaring arms A2. Preferably, as shown, said skirt and arms are formed by slitting the l metal and bending it back, thus forming an opening A3 through the side of the member A.
The inner shell member B which is Open at both ends, has an aperture or slot B in its side wall, and a vertical slot B2 connecting therewith. At its bottom is a holding flange B3, and screw holes b are provided which register with the screw holes a of the cap member A when the shell members are assembled.
C is the head of smaller diameter than the shell member B, provided on its top with a cam D, and having a laterally extending connecting nipple E adapted to be inserted into the tubing K which in turn is connected to an air pump. Within said Shell member B and between said flange B3 and the end or mouth of head C, is a ring or sleeve F of rubber or similar compressible material.
In assembling the coupling, the compressible ring F is first placedwvithin the top engages the screwv S so that said screw serves the double function of a fastening for the telescoping shell members and a cam follower. When the cam follower S rests on the lowermost parts of the cam surfaces D the compressible sleeve F is in extended or normal'position, as shown in Fig. 4.
In use, the coupling having been placed over the valve stock of the tire, the-...user
The head C is then inserted into Said grasps the arms A2 with thumb and finger and rotates the shell to the right. This ro'- tary movement causes the cam follower S to ride upward upon the cams D, thus forcing thehead C and lip B? toward each other and compressing the ring F as shown in Fig. 5, so that it will bulge Or Swell and makes intimate contact with the valve stock of the tire forming a tight seal therewith and preventing leakage of the air. v
My improved coupling is of simple construction, can be'vreadily and economically manufactured, and furnishes efficient means for preventing leakage of the air between the pump and the tire valve. The valve stock to which the coupling is applied, is usually screw threaded, and the slight rotation of the shell in applying the coupling not only compresses sleeve F about said threaded valve stock but valso tends to Screw the compressed sleeve F downward a little upon the valve stock, thus still further insuring a tight seal between the sleeve F and the valve stock.
I claim:
