Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 22, 1915. Serial No. 35,596.
Be it known that I, JOHN citizen of the United States, residing at Gibson City, in the county of Ford andv State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rubbing-Posts, of
' which the following is a specification.
, regulated so that more or less oil may This invention relates to certain novel and 'useful improvements in rubbing posts adapted especially for antivermm treatment in animal husbandry.
In carrying out the present inventionf it is my purpose to provide an oiling post againstwhich hogs may rub themselves for antivermin treatment and wherein the oil will be automatically fed to the post when the hogs are rubbing themselves against such post. It is also my purpose to provide an oiling post wherein the movement of the valve, controlling the flow of oil, may be be' delivered from the oil receptacle.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combin'ation and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth .in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of an oiling post .larged fragmentary constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation ofthe post. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is an enlongitudinal sectional View showing the adjusting means 'for regulating the valve.
Referring now to the-drawings in detail,
1 designates a baseboard adapted to be bolt.- cd or otherwise secured ,to' a supporting post or'the like. Secured to the baseboard 1 adjacent to the upper end thereof is an oil reservoir 2 having the upper end thereof equipped with a hinged cover 3 an the lower end provided with a depending ofiset portion 4 spaced apart from the baseboard and having the rear wall thereof formed with an opening 5 in which is secured an outlet valve 6 normally held in closed posia stem 7 disposed in a horizontal tion by means of a spring andprovided with plane and projecting toward the adjacent face of the baseboard 1. Secured to the baseboard 1 be-.
low the reservolr 2 is a bra'cket 8 embodying outwardly projecting pivot ears 9,' while se- IV. HAINES, a-

spaced apart in parallelism. 12 designates;
an arm curved longitudinally to receive-the.
body of the hogs and having the convxed 1 face thereof formed with transverse ribs13 vexed face formed with a rearwardly proectlng longitudinally extending reinforcing of pivoted between the ears 9 and the lower end portion mounted between the lugs 11.
appropriately spaced apart, andtheiconrib 14 having the upper end portion ,there- Formed on the upper end of the arm'12 and projecting upwardly therefrom" between the stem 7 of the valve 6 and the adjacent p'ort1on of the baseboard is an'extension 15 and slidably mounted upon the extension 15 is a'wedge block 16 formed with a slot 17 through which is passed a set screw 18 carried by the extension 15. The outer surface of the wedge block 16 engages the .stem 7 of the valve 6 and as the wedge block is ad-, justed down or up the valve may be opened more or less in the swinging of the arm. In the present instance, the outer surface of the extension 15 is formed with a longitudinally extending groove 19-that forms a guideway for the wedge block 16. In practice, the reservoir 2 is filled with crude oil or other antivermin liquid and the hogs rub against the arm 12,,thereby swing: ing the latter about its pivotal connection with the.brac'ket 8. In this swinging of the lever, the wedge block in engagement withthe stem 7 of the valve 6 actuates the latter to open position, thereby enabling the antiv'ermin liquid to flow from the reservoir down along the outer surface of the arm.
The upper end portion of the arm carry ing the extension 15 is offset as at 20 and the upper surface of the offset portion is channeled as at 21 so that the liquid flowing from the reservoir may drop into such channel and flow down the ribbed concaved side of the arm.
While I have herein shown and. described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I 'do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and' delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention. 7
1.0 tween its ends upon said baseboard below I claim 1. A rubbing post comprising a baseboard adapted to be fastened to a support, a reservoir secured to said baseboard, adjacent to the upper end thereof, and having the bottom portion thereof oflset downwardly and spaced apart fromthe baseboard, a valve carried by the rear wall of said offset portion and provided with a horizontal stem and normally closed, an arm pivoted be- -said reservoir and adapted to be rubbed by the hogs and having'the upper end thereof formed with an extension disposed between v said'valve stem and the adjacent portion of said baseboard and adapted to actuate the ."valve'stem to open the valve in the movement of the lever under the action of the hog I 1 2. A rubbingpost comprising a baseboard adapted'to begfastened to a support 'a reservoir secured 'to said baseboard, adjacent to the upper end thereof, and having the bottom portion thereof offset downwardly and spaced apart from the baseboard, a valve" carried by the rear wall of said offset portion' and provided with a horizontal stem and normally. closed, an arm pivoted between its ends upon said baseboard below said reservoir and adapted to be rubbed by the hogs and-having-the upper end thereof formed'with an extension disposed between said valve stem and the adjacent portion of said baseboard and adapted to actuate the the. upper end thereof, and having the bottom portion thereof offset downwardly and.
spaced apart from the baseboard, a valve carried by the rear wall of said offset portion and provided with a horizontal stem and normally closed, an arm pivoted between its ends upon said baseboard below said reservoir and adapted to be rubbed by the hogs and having the upper end thereof formed-with an extension disposed between said valve stem and the. adjacent portion of said baseboard and adapted to actuate the valve stem to open the valve in the movement of the lever under the action of the hogs, and a wedge block adjustablymounted on said extension to vary the movement of said valve.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence oftwo witnesses.
