This invention relates to improvements in means for guiding and shifting a belt with relation to a pulley, and is more particularly directed to the provision of such a device adapted to be associated with the drive belt of a threshing machine end or like structure having a pulley at the end of a shaft whereby upon actuation of the device, the belt will be forced off the pulley and entirely detached from the engine structure.
It is the object of the invention to provide such a device which may be readily and efficiently operated and which has its parts so arranged as to form a compact and relatively simple structure, which will prove durable in use.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention resides more particularly in the novel combination, formation and arrangement of partsas more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device, showing the same in position to hold a belt in place on a pulley. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the device, but showing its parts extended to throw the belt off the pulley. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal sectional view through the device. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4, showing the operating means for the .drive shaft of the device. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 5 designates the body portion of the device which comprises a plate member having one end portion provided with lugs 6 whereby it may be readily attached to an engine structure in such manner that the body extendsbetween a belt when in p0- sltion on a pulley, a belt being designated at 7 in Fig. 1. A slide member is provided comprising a relatively long portion 8 and a shorter outer. portion 8 connected thereto by a hinge 9 having its leaves countersunk 1n the bottom faces of the portions whereby the shorter portion may swing downwardly, this slide member being slidably' held on the face of the body by flanges 10 having their inner faces beveled to slidably engage bevel sides of the said sections, the section 8 carries an upstanding roller 11 and the section 8 carries a similar roller 12,'these rollers being secured rotatably on the section by the pins 13 passed therethrough and being adapted when the slide member is in the retracted position, shown in Fig. 1, to form a guide means for holding the belt on the pulley. The outer end of the body portion is beveled at 14 and the slide member is adapted to be slid outwardly on the body so that the roller 11 engages the belt and forces it laterally off the pulley, the outer section during this movement extending outwardly of the body so that it will drop and permit the belt to completely detach itself. As the sliding member is retracted, the bevelportion 14 of the body engages the section 8 and raises it.
For moving the slide member, the bottom face thereof has formed thereon a longitudinal rib 15 toothed at 16 on its bottom face and slidable in a longitudinal groove 17 in the top face of the body, and a transverse shaft 18 is rotatably mounted on the bottom of the body through the medium of suitable bearings 19 and carries a pinion 20 which engages through an opening 21 in the body to mesh with the teeth of the rib or rack member. This shaft may extend to any'position desired toefiiciently operate the mechanism and may include a universal joint portion 22.
The operative end of the shaft 18 is journally held between vertical arms 23 carried by a bracket 24 suitably-supported on an engine and carries a suitable operating wheel 25. Pivoted between the free end of the arms 23 is a bar 26 which holds the shaft in the arms and Which is laterally ext ended past its pivot as at 27 to form a cam head Whereby upon rocking the bar the shaft Will "b" friction'ally bound'and thus held agalnst undesired movement to move the-slidemember.
