Fort Payne, in the county of Dekalb and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a specification. 7 r This invention relates to improvements in fans and has particular application to motor driven fans. I In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a device of the class described which will be found espefan and wherein the fan blades may be elevated and lowered so that the distance between the fan blades and the floor of the room or other compartment in which the fan is installed may be I 1 varied. 20
It is also my features of simplicity, efficiency and durability, which may be installed and maintained at a minimum expense and which will operate effectively for its intended purose. P With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists inthe construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter. set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims. j
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a fan constructed in accordance with the present invention, the same being shown as suspended from aceiling. Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a ceiling plate which is substantially rectangular, in contour and is formed, adjacent V with openings 2 through which securing screws or bolts are adapted to pass in order to fasten the plate to the ceiling. In the present instance, the upper end of the shaft 14: is formed with an upwardly extending axial stem 17 and threaded onto the stem 17 is a nut 18 having the outer edge thereof formed with a groove alining with a groove in the adjacent end'of the shaft 14 to form a way designed to receive anti-friction bodies'19, the anti-friction bodies 19 engaging the inner wall of the tube 5 and acting to hold the shaft properly centered within the tube and minimize friction between the upper end of the shaft and the tube.
Suitably fastened to the upper surface of the flange 6 at one side of the tube is a spring motor 20 which is preferably in the and'depen'ding therefrom is a tube formof a clock train and includes a horizontal main shaftor arbor '21- upon which is rotatably mounted a sleeve 21 carrying a driving gear 22 working within a slot formed in the adjacent portion of the flange 6 and meshing with an annular row of teeth 23 formed on the upper surfaceof the disk" concentrically thereof. Also keyed upon the sleeve 21-is a pinion 24t meshing with a gear wheel 25 keyed upon a power shaft 26.
Surrounding the power shaft 26 is a spring 27 having the inner end thereof secured to the main'sleeve 21 is controlled through asuitable form of governor so that the mam shaft wlll rotate at a unlform speed.
In the present instance, the governor 33 embodies spring arms 34- having correspond ing ends thereof fastened to one end of the sleeve 21' and the remaining end fastened to a collar 35 surrounding the shaft 21 and capable of rotary and longitudinal movements thereon, and a collar 36 fixed upon the shaft 21 adjacent to the collar 35 between the I latter and the adjacent end of the sleeve 21. These spring arms 34 are equipped with weights 36 respectively andin the rotation "of the sleeve 21; under the action of the spring the weights 36 fly outwardly and so slide the collar 35toward the collar 36 and v in the'event of the too rapid rotation ofthe "sleeve 21 the'collar 35 will engage the collar 36 and so act, as-a friction brake to cut down the speed of the sleeve; 7 In practice, when it is desired to set the.
