To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES Soon, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at l Rutland Square, Edinburgh, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to'lype-l/Vriting Machines, ofwhichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to typewriting machines of the kind in which the type bars are carried by axles mounted in fixed bearings and relates particularly to book typewriting machines of this character which are fitted with reversible type heads, the chief'object being to enable the type heads to be expeditiously adjusted so that the type thereon can be perfectly alined and rendered in condition'for obtaining correct writing on the platen with greater facility than has" heretofore been possible. In existing machines of this character the alinement of the type on the type heads has been effected by shifting the bearings of the type bars and refixing the same, or by bending or distorting the type bars, or by effecting both these operations. These methods of adjustment are unreliable and troublesome in practice and considerable time is required to effect the alinement of the type.
According to this invention the type head is mounted cnthe type bar in such a manner that it canbe set or adjusted thereon to increase or diminish the distance between the type and the fixed bearings of the type bar axle for effecting the desired alinement of the type. The. type head is mounted on an eccentric, cam' or other suitable member which is carried bythe type bar and arranged so as to be capable of angular displacement or rotation about a fixed axis which is normal to the longitudinal axis of the said type bar, the maximum displacement of the type head in relation to the type bar depending on the eccentricity of the eccentric or cam with respect to this fixed axis. hen the type heads are provided with two or more type characters they are mounted on the'eccentrics or cams so as to be free to turn thereon and are adapted to be retained in theirvarious positions by means of springs or other appropriate means pro vided on the type bars.

The eccentric or cam may be mounted on the type bar in any other manner so long as it is capable of being set or adjusted to eii'ect the desired displacement of the type head with respect to the axis of the pin 12 (Fig. 2) and the fixed bearings of the type bar. In the case of reversible type heads which are provided with two or more type characters d it is often advisable to arrange the type bars a pertaining thereto, so that the type heads are disposed in series or rows 6,6 one above the other as shown in Fig. 6, to permit of their being conveniently clustered around an opening in the framing of the machine. With this arrangement of the type bars I effect the resetting'of the type heads d after the typing operation, by two or more superposed segments or rings 6 e which are adapted to act on the type heads when the type bars have regained their elevated position. i
In order to allow the type heads 6 of the upper row to engage with their resetting segment or ring 6 it is necessary to slit or serrate the segment or ring 6 pertaining to the lower row of type heads as shown in brokenlines in Fig. 5, as otherwise the type heads of the upper row would engage with the segment or ring 6 pertaining to the lower row of type heads and would be prevented from' engaging with their own particular segment or ring 6 By serrating the lower segment or ring 6 free movement of the type heads of the upper row may be obtained as they enter the serrations or slots 6 in the lower segment or ring and come into contact with the upper resetting segment or ring 6 provided therefor. In this manner the type heads and type bars may be compactly arranged around the opening in the machine so that the number of type heads and the capacity of the machine may be considerably increased.

' Fig. 6, which carries two series of radial arms 9 arranged at different levels to correspond with the two rows or series of type heads 6, 6 j Two perforated lugs 9 may be provided on the frame and are adapted to be engaged with two pins 9' arranged on the framing of the machine. Each of these pins is provided with a spiral or other spring 9 which flexibly supports the frame 9 above the type bars. The frame is connected by suitable mechanism, not shown, with the change keys of the machine and the depression of these latter will cause the frame to be lowered against the action of c the springs 9 When the frame is in the lowest position the extremities g of the radial arms 9 thereon are in the path of movement of the type bars and will engage with the projections (Z formed on the type heads thereof when the type keys are operated In this manner an angular movement will be imparted to each of the type heads so that the lower type character (Z frame 9 is not operated the upper type d will be in the operative position.
If a type head is to be reversed, one of the change keys of the machine is first depressed to bring the frame 9 into the operative position, so that when the type key corresponding to the type head is operated the desired reversal will be effected and the proper character brought to the printing position.
The type heads are adapted to beretained in their normal or reversed positions in the usual manner by springs f which are mounted on the type bars and are adapted to engage with projections f thereon.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a type bar, of an adjustable eccentric carried by the said bar and a type head mounted on the said eccentric.
2. In a typewriting machine the combination with a type bar of an eccentric carrled by the said bar, a type head mounted Von the said eccentric and means for imparting an angular movement to said eccentric about a fixed'axis normal to'the longitudinal axis of the type bar.
3. In a typewriting machine the combinationwith a type bar of a pincarried by the said bar, a collar formed eccentrically on the said pin, a type head mounted on the said eccentric collar and means for imparting an angular movement to the said eccentric collar to effect the alinement of the type.
4, In a typewriting machine the combination with a type bar of an adjustable eccentric carriedby the said bar a type head.
