GAS STOVE. APPLICATION FILED FEB. I. 1915.

PERCY GERALD OWEN, OF VANCOUVEBfIBRiITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
'eAs-s'rovn.
To all whom it may-concern:
Be it known that I, PERCY GERALD OWEN,
a subject of the King of Great Britain, and
' a resident of the city of Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented ertain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Stoves, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to improvements in gas stoves, with more particular reference to the means of lighting same, and the object of my invention is to devise a simple and,
Figure l is a plan view of a portion of.
agas stove, showing the application of my device thereto. Fig. 2 is a view of the lever which carries the platinum element.
Similar figures of reference indicate simi lar parts throughout the several views.
1 indicates a fragmentary portion of the top of a gas stove havin the usual gas ring 2 provided with the gas Jets 3, to which ring is led, in the ordinary manner, the branch pipe & from the main gas pipe 5.
\ 6 indicates the gas cook provided with a suitable handle *7.
Secured into the stove at a suitable position is a suitably insulated pin 8, on which is swingably mounted a lever 9, which lever is provided with an extension 10 and which extension carries a boss 11, all as shown in 4 Figs. 1 and 2. Rigidly secured into the boss 11 is a tubular member 12 the outer extremity of which is, when in operation, in close proximit to one or two of the gas jets .3.
Carried hy the tubular member 12 'at. its
outer extremity is a platinum element 13.
A. finger 14, of suficient length to engage the Jever 9, is secured to or formed 1nte grally with, the cock, as shown in Fig.1. The handle 7 -may, be suitably insulated from the head of the cock, if desired,- or the insulating of the various parts may be carried out in any approved fashion where necessary for the protection of the operator. A spring 15,is provided for the purpose of returning the tubular-member 12 to its nor-.
xnal position after the stove is lighted, and

a spring 16 is provided for returning the cock to its normal full open position. The spring 16 may-be secured to the body of the cock 6, or to any other suitablestationary part and positioned so that it will be acted upon and compressed by the cock, or the handle as shown in Fig. 1, as soon as the cock is moved past its normal full open position when lighting the stove, as hereinafter described. l
1. 17 and 18 indicatethe Wires of an electrical circuit, receiving their current from the house lighting circuit or from a battery.
19 indicates a branch wire from wire 17 to the finger 14c and 20 indicates avbranch wire from wire 18 to the platinum element 13, while 21 is a ground wire from the platinum element to any suitable point and may be connected to theever 9 as shown in ill be seen that a branch circuit is formed through which current may be passed to the platinum element 13 and which circuit may be completed or broken by the finger 14: when contacted with, or moved away from, the lever 9.
' Having thus indicated the principal parts of my inventionl will now indicate the manner in which it operates. As is well known, when the stove is not in use, the gas cook 6 is in the shut position, the handle 7 being then at right angles to the dotted position ofithe handle shown in Fig. 1. The
tubular member 12 is then its normal position, as shown dotted in Fig. 1, being held in that position by the. spring 15. To new light the stove, the handle 7 is moved to openthe cock 6 and is carried around a little past the full open'position so as to engage the point of the lever 9 and thus swing the tubular member 12 from the dotted position until its extremity bearing the platinum element 13 is close tothe gas jets 3, as shown in full in Fig. 1. As soon as the finger 14 contacts withgthe lever 9 the circuit through I the platinum element is completed, causing it to glow sufiiciently to light the gas at the nearest jets, which imturn light all the rest.
The gas being lighted, the handle Z is re leased, whereupon the spring 16 brings it back to the dotted position, when the cock will he in its normal dull open position, while the spring 15 returns the tubular member 12 to its normal position clear of the flame, from which it will be seen that the circuit through the platinum element 13 is then broken, as the finger 14 does not con- 4 tact With the'lever 9 when the handle 7 is in I the full open position, as shown dotted in Fig. 1. In order to insure a full supply of gas at themoment of-li'ghting, the port in Y the cock 6 is made larger than usual so that its area will not be restricted by the -move. ment of the cock past the usual full open position when lighting the gas.
It will be seen, therefore, that I have devised a simple and inexpensive means whereb gas stoves are made self-lighting and vii normall at a distance from said gas ring, means or swinging said igniting element into close proximity to said gas jets andfor'simultaneously' closing said circuit to- I he'at'said element, said means being adapted to operate only when said inlet cock is moved past its normal -fu1l open position, means for returning the igniting element to its normal position when the gas inlet cock is returned to its normal full open position, and spring means for returning to its normal full openposltion.
Dated at Vancouver,- B. 0., this 11th day of January, 1915.

E. G. JoHNsoN.
