Original application filed October 17, 1912, Serial No. 726,290. Divided and this application filed September Be it known that I, ISAAC A. GEORGE, citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Making Raceway-Walls for Bearings, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. v
My invention relates to the formation of roller bearings employing conically shaped or flaring race-way walls such, for example, as is disclosed in my co-pending application Serial No. 543,665, filed February 1d, 1910, where such race-way walls are broadly claimed, and has for its object the provision of an improved structure for producing such race-way walls, the present application being a division of my original application Serial No. 726,290, filed October 17, 1912, in which the method herein disclosed is claimed.
The method of my invention, claimed in my said original application, consists in exerting pressure upon the facial marginal portion of a metal disk or circular element, limiting the action of such pressure to form a flaring dished wall of such marginal portion and removing a central circular portion or bottom of the dished disk to complete the bore of the race-way wall. The border of this removed central portion closely approximates the inner border of the dish base and this central portion is preferably cylindrical to constitute a cylindrical continuation of and merging with the tapered bore. The central portion of the metal is desirably removed after the wall has been flared, though the invention is not to be limited to this characteristic.
The structure of my invention includes a die with a tapering bore, the wall of the bore being convexed inwardly, and a tapering punch, the disk to be operated upon being located between the punch and die, the curvature of the die wall preventing the metal from unduly wrinkling as the punch and die are brought together. The smaller end of the die bore corresponds in diameter to the smaller end of the tapering bore of the race-way wall and where this tapering bore terminates in cylindrical extension the punch terminates in a cylindri- Serial No. 790,838.

Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate the preferred form of race-way wall structure which it is the object of my invention to provide an improved means for making. This race-way wall structure includes a conical or tapering'wall 1 whose tapering bore 2 merges with a cylindrical continuation 3 of such bore, the axis of the tapering portion of the bore and the axis of the cylindrical portion of the bore being co-incident.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 3, the structure shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is to be made out of a disk blank 4 usually of a thick sheet of iron or steel sufliciently malleable or ductile for the purpose, it being possible to carbonize the product and thereby further adapt it to the hard service to which it is to be subject. The disk at of proper thickness is received within the circular space afforded by the bore of a ring 5 which rests upon the die 6. The die 6 has a bore which tapers from the ring 5, the wall in which the bore of the die is formed being inwardly convexed as indicated at 7, the preferred curvature being a French curve. The disk 4 initially rests upon the die 6 at the larger end of the bore of this die as indicated by dotted lines, the punch 8 being initially withdrawn to permit of such location of the disk 4 when flat. The punch carries a tapered plug portion 9 which cor responds with substantial accuracy to the inner surface of the raceway wall 1. The
portion of the die bore which is in opposition to the tapered portion 9 of the punch, when this punch has been moved to its limit toward the die, corresponds with substantial accuracy to the external surface of the raceway wall 1 excepting that the base portion of the raceway wall which is curved as a result of the dishing operation. A shearing ring 10 constituting in efiect a part of die 6, has a circular shearing edge that is located beneath the race-way wall, the circle in which this shearing edge lies closely approximating the diameter of the cylindrical bore continuation 3. The punch 8 preferably has a cylindrical continuation 11 that is of a diameter corresponding tothe' diameter of the cylindrical bore continuation 3, the diameterof the cylindrical punch element 11 having shearing clearance from the cutting edge of the shearing ring 10, into which ring the punch element 11 slightly projects when the operation has been finished. The circular cutting edge of the shearing ring 10 and the punch portions 9 and 11 have a common axis, the punch portion 11 being of sufficient diameter to remove the bottom of the dish that is temporarily formed in the operation of the device up to the circular line where the inner face of the dish bottom intersects the inner fiaring face of the dish. In this way the tapering bore portion 2 and the cylindrical extension 3 thereof merge.
I WVhen the punch is brought toward the die after the disk 4 has been interposed between these elements, the cylindrical punch element ll initially engages the central portion of the disk and as the punch continues in its even approach the central portion of the disk is depressed, the part of the disk surrounding the part directly engaged with the V cylindrical punch element 11 gradually being brought into the form as illustrated at 1, the result being completed when the cylindrical punch element 11 has penetrated the bottom of the formed dish. Properly to confine the flow of the metal under formation the body of the punch overhangs the tapered portion 9 thereof so as to afford an annular space whose upper portion corresponds in cross section to the upper part of the wall 1. This overhanging portion or larger part of the punch 8 also takes part in forcing the metal of the disk into its final shape by means of the inwardly convexing wall surface 7 The disk is-formed into the desired shape without having the metal thereof wrinkle. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following A structure for producing race-way walls for bearings including a die having atapered bore with a surface inwardly convexed at exterior of the tapering race-way wall to be produced and'a punch havinga tapering portion substantially corresponding with the interior of the tapering race-way wall to be produced, the punch and die being substantially co-axial, said punch also being en larged to overhang the tapered portion thereof, the punch having a cylindrical extension that merges with the tapered portion thereof while the die is provided with a shearing portionadjacent the narrower end of the tapered bore in the die and presenting a circular cutting edge operating in conjunction with the punch-to remove the bottoms of the dishes formed by the cooperation of the die and punch and affording merging cylindrical continuations of the tapered bores of the formed race-way walls, the punch continuation and the cutting edge of the shearing portion being coaxial with the tapered portion of the punch and the tapered bore of the die.
