UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN INSECT-GUARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,379, dated July 25, 1871.
To'all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES WILLIAM BROOK, of Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Insect-Guards; and I do hereby 'declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my insect-guard, and Fig. 2 a vertical central section thereof. p

This invention has reference to an improved device for preventing insects, such as bugs, ants, &c.', from entering safes, beds, or any article. of furniture from which it is desired to exclude them and it consists of a bell or other suitably-shaped vessel or case, which is supplied with a reservoir and a central stem or leg, substantially as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A in the accompanying drawing refers to a vessel or case, which is made, preferably, of a bell-shape, and `constructed upon the inner circumference of its lower edge with a screw, which receives the exterior circumference or screwthreaded portion of the circular reservoir, hereinafter more particularly referred to. This vessel is `constructed in its upper portion or neck with a screw-thread, a, cut therein, as shown in Fig. 2. Between the lower extremity of this screwthread a and the upper extremity of the chamber c1,- with which the vessel A is supplied, there is a horizontal partition, a2, which is constructed or formed with the said vessel and of sufcient thickness to form a substantial support or bearing for the central stem or leg G, resting against the same. Through the center of the partition a2 is out a screw-threaded aperture to receive the screw or reduced portion c of the said stem O,- whereby the said latter device may be attached and held to the vessel A or withdrawn therefrom, when desired. The vessel A itself is attached to the leg of the safe, bed, or other article of furniture having legs, bymeans of its screw c, in the event of which the stem or leg C, in order to facilitate its (the said vessel) being applied thereto, can be withdrawn by the means above described from the said vessel, and. the said stem or leg secured afterward to the latter and the leg of the furniture. B refers to the circular reservoir or receptacle, which is attached to or detached from the vessel A, as already above stated, and so constructed as to have an annular opening between the wall of its inner circular portion, as plainly shown in Fig. 2, and through which opening the stem or leg C passes. Within this receptacle or reservoir is placed any suitable substance, which, upon the entrance thereto of the insect, will result fatally to the life thereof, or upon its approach to said reservoir will be repelled and driven off, thereby preventing it from passing beyond said reservoir, the only way by which it can reach the leg of the furniture to which said vessel A is applied. This reservoir or receptacle is supplied with a knob or handle, b, by means of which it may be grasped when it is desired to remove the same from the vessel A. O refers to the central stem or leg, partially above described, which is suppliedin its lower extremity with a vertical aperture or recess, into which the shank of the caster is inserted should it be desired to attach such to the article of furniture to which this guard is attached; hence it will be observed that this guard can be used in connection with articles of furniture provided with or without casters.
Aside from the usefulness of my guard, it also forms an ornament to the article of furniture to which it is applied or attached, and may be made of any suitable material.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
