To all whom it may concern: y
Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM D. FoRsY'rH, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented a new andv useful Improvement in Car-Truck Side Frames, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to steel side frames for wheel trucks of freight cars, and consists of a rigid frame or truss connecting the journal boxes and which rs composed of forged or pressed steel members which are riveted together. v
The object of the invention is a side frame or similar part which is suliiciently durable t0 withstand hard service, and which is designed and constructed as to give a maximum capacity in proportion to its weight for supporting vertical loads and side thrusts without undue deflection.
Further objects of the invention will appear in'connection with the vfollowing description of the the accompanying drawings@ and what` the invention consists in will be -more particularly defined in the appendedclaims.
In the drawings, wherein the same reference characters designate the same or similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a top view of a side frame embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a side view and Fig. 3 is` an end view of the same; Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-section on the line 1 4 in Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross-section on the line 5 5 in Fig. 2; Fig. 6 is `a plan view of a modified form of side frame embodying the invention; Fig. 7 is a side view of the side frame shown in Fig. 6; Fig. 8 is a vertical cross-section on the line 8-8 in Fig. (3; and Figs. 9, 10 and 11 are detail views of modified forms of brake hanger-and wear clip forf'iisc with side frames embodying the, invention, Fig. 9 being a side view` Fig. 10 being a vertical section on-the line 10--10 in Fig. 9and Fig. v1i beinga top plan view thereof, respectively.
The side frames shown in the drawings consist of three principal members which are riveted together. namely. a main longitudinal member having top and bottom portions, and constituting a one-piece tension Chord and compression chord member, a
lside frames illustrated in 'member and supports the middle bolster or column member, and a top chord brace; and in addition thereto a lower tie rod which is detachable. The pedestals for the journal boxes may be of any desired type, and they. are bolted to the ends of the side frames and their lower ends are connected by the tie rods in any suitable manner. These pedestals are not shown in the drawings.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, the side frame shown therein consists "'of a forged or pressed steel principal truss member '11. which is substantially U or channel shape in cross-section at its ends and which is provided with a stifl'ener or channel 12 which extends nearly from end to end thereof and is riveted between the top edges of its side walls. This channel shape brace member is arranged with its web horizontal and its side flanges extending upward and riveted to the upper edges of theside walls of the main frame member 11. The side walls of themainframe member are split about midway of their height for about twothirds of their middle length and the bottom portion 13 thereof is bent' down away from the top portion to form a large enough opening to receive the ends of the spring plate and bolster and inclose the truck springs. rPhe main frame member 11 may be constructed in any suitable manner but preferably is made in accordance with the member described in my Patent No. 1,125,296, dated Jan. 1S), 1915. The side edges of thedownward extending portion 13 of the main frame member are twisted outwardly and downwardly. and the'middle length thereof is inverted channel shape in cross-section. The middle vlength of the, portion 123 is providedl with outwardly extending tlanges 1S) along the lower extremity of its site walls in order toA stitfen this portion of thc frame against both vertical and lateral loads. A forged or pressed steel lbolster frame member 1l connects the top and bottom portions of the main frame spring plate 15 and wear plates 16 for the bolster. Brake hanger brackets 17 are also supported from the columns 14. A tie bar 1S is provided for connecting the lower ends of the. journal boxes. rl`he bolster frame member 1-1 is made of pressed steel and is shaped like the letter U in its 4general. configuration. is channel'shape in cross-section and the side walls ofthe free ends of the side vcolumn portions 14 project through -the webV of the channel l2 and are riveted to the top pbrdle portion 13 of the frame 11 and is riveted to the side walls thereof. i The spring plate rests directly on the middle portion of the bolsterframe member and is riveted through its top wall and through the web of the bottom portion 13 of the frame. The rivets which secure the spring plate 15 in place project through the middle web ofthe lower portion 13 of theframe 11 and form studs 20 which project into corresponding holes in the tie bar 18 for positioning it lon-` gitudinally of the` lower portion of the frame. The tie bar 18 is inverted channel shape throughout its middlcrlength and fits within the space between the side walls of the depressed portion 13 of the frame meinber .11." The trussed shapey of the side frame causes the .top portion thereof, which is braced'by the channel member 12, to be in compression from end to end, and causes the depressed bottom portion 13 and the inclined portions which connect it with the ends of the main frame member to be in tension. The bolster frame or column member 14 is in compression at the columns, and its lower portion which is riveted to the depressed portion 13 of the frame 11 is in tension. The effect of side thrust on thv side frame may be to increase the tension stresses and to'decrease the compression stresses on one side of the side frame, and vice versa on the other side yof the side frame. There maybe a reversal of stress in the upper and lower horizontal portion of the side frame fronr tension to compression or from compression to tension under a sufficiently great side thrust. The shape of the cross-section of the side frame through its upper and lower horizontal portions is that of a channel, with horizontal webs and heavy vertical flanges and is especially adapted to withstand side thrust. y
In thefmodified form of side frame shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 the main, frame 21'l and l bolster frame or column member 22r are simil es lar to the main frame member 11 and bolster column member 14'- of the side frame shown in Figs. 1 to 5. The top channel'23 of. the,
side frame shown in Figs. 6, 7 and 8 is ar-l ranged'with its horizontal'web uppermost and its side fianges extending down between' the sides of the top portion of the main and 11 the brake hanger 24 is riveted to the horizontal web portion ofthe top channel 12 instead of being supported by the columns 14 as in. the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 5. It is evident that the spring hangers i'iiav be secured in other ways than those illustratefhand that the shape and arrangement of the parts of the side frame afford ample room for attaching the brake hangers Where desired. Pressed steel wear plates 2.5 are shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11, and it is evidentthat either cast, forged or pressed steel "wear plates may be used with either form of side frame.
The invention isnot restricted to the de tailsof the construction and form and arrangement of thepa'rts shownand described.
I claim the following as my invention:l 1. A car truck side frame comprising a main longitudinal frame member having its ends channelshaped, the side walls of said channel being separated 'along approximately horizontal lilies throughout the middle portion of their length` and the bottom portion of said channel being bent downward and twisted or turned' inside out into inverted channel shape in cross-section, spaced vertical members connecting the bot- -tom portion of said frame with the top portions thereof and inclosing a space for the bolster and springs, "and a longitudinal brace member connecting said topa portions between their ends and the tops ofthe vertical members, said membersv being rigidly secured together and constituting a truss for supporting 'vertical loads and a Webbed girder for resisting horizontal thrusts.
2. A car truck side frame comprising a main longitudinal frame member having its ends channel shaped, the side walls of said .channel being separated .along .approximately horizontal lines throughout the middle portion of their'length, the top portions thereof being spaced apart and thebottom portion beingr bent downward and twisted outward and downwardinto inverted channel shape in'cross-section, spaced vertical membersconneating the bottom portion of said frame with the ltop portions thereof and inclosing a-space for 'the bolsteran'd springs. and a longitudinal brace member connecting said' top portions throughout their length, sa-id'members being rigidly` secured together and constituting a truss for supporting vertical loads and` a webbed girder for resisting horizontal thrusts.
3. A car truck sideframe eomprisingi a main longitudinal frame member having its yends channel shaped, the side walls of said outwardly extending channel being separated along approximately horizontal lines throughout the middle portion of their length, and the. bottom p ortion thereof being spaced below the top portions and of inverted channel shape in cross-section, said bottom portion having flanges along the lower'edges of its side walls, spaced vertical members connecting the bottom portion of said frame with the top portions thereof and inclosing a 'space for the bolster and springs, and a longitudinal brace member connecting said topv portions, said members being rigidly secured together.
4. A car truck side frame comprising a main longitudinal frame member having its ends channel shaped, the side walls of said channel being separated along' approximately horizontal lines throughout the mid-E dle portion of their length, and the bottom` portion thereof being spaced below the top portions and of inverted channel shape in cross-section, spaced vertical members connecting the bottom portion1 of said frame with the top portions thereof -and inclosing a space for theibolster and springs, said vertical members being connected at their bottoni ends bv an inverted channel shape member which is fitted over and incloses the side walls of said bottom portion. and a longitudinal brace member connecting said top portions, said members being rigidly se- Y cured together.
5. A car truck side frame comprising a main longitudinal frame member having its ends channel shaped, the side walls of said channel being separated along approximately horizontal lines throughout the middle portion of their length, and the bottom portion thereofbeing bent downward with its edges twisted downward and outward at the middle into an inverted channel shape;
spaced vertical members connecting the bottom portion of said frame with the top portions thereof and inclosing a space for the bolster and springs. and -a longitudinal brace member connectingr said top portions between their ends and the tops of the vertical' members, said members being rigidly secured together, and a tie rod arranged below said truss for connecting the journal box pedestals, said tie rod being removably secured between the side walls of said bottom portion.
6. In combination, in a car truck side frame or the like, a main frame member comprising two laterally spaced compression members and a tensionmember. said inembers being integral at their ends and/bent away from each other vertically at their "middles, a horizontal brace member spaced above said tension member and secured be tween the ends of said compression members lengthwise thereof whereby the ends of said frame are boxshape, and a middle frame away from each other vertically at theirA middles, a horizontal brace member secured between said compression members and spaced above said tension member from end to end thereof whereby the ends of said frame are box shape, and a middle frame member secured longitudinally upon said tension member at its middle and having upwardly projecting ends forming columns secured to said longitudinal brace member.
8. In combination, in a car truck side frame o-r the like, a main frame memberl comprising two laterally spaced compression members and a tension member, said `members being integral at their ends and bent away from 'each other vertically at their middles, a horizontal brace member spaced above said tension member throughout its length and secured between the ends of said compression members along their upper edges lengthwise thereof, whereby the ends of said frame are box shape and a pair of vchannel shape member havingi'ts side walls vertical -and' split lengthwise and spread apart vertically throughout their middle length` the lower portion constituting a tension chord; a top web rigidly secured between the top portions of said side walls lengthwise thereof andforming therewith a combined compression chord and horizontal girder; and a middle bolster frame rigidly secured to said compression chord and tension chord at top and bottom respectively.
