To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, TASHIRO MATSUI, a citizen of Japan, residing at WVenatchee, in the county of Chelan, State of l/Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot-Rests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to foot rests and particularly to that type which is directly associated with a chair.

The object of the invention resides in the provision of a foot rest which can be readily associated with a chair of ordinary construction and when so associated is capable of a wide range of adjustment and in addition may be folded within the limits of the chair when not in use.

l/Vith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a chair having the improved foot rest associated therewith, said foot rest being shown in extended or active position; Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1 with the foot rest in folded position; Fig. 3, a plan view of what is shown in Fig. 1 with the back and seat of the chair removed; Fig. 4, a section on the line 4-l of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a section on the line 55 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6, a section on the line 6(3 of Fig. 1.

Referring to the drawings A indicates generally a chair including a seat 10, a back 11. legs 12, front rungs 13 and rear rungs 1 1.

The improved foot rest comprises parallel rails 15 and 16 which are connected in a suitable manner at one end to the uppermost rear rung 14; and at their other ends to standards 17 rising from the uppermost front rung 13. The inner or adjacent faces Specification of Letters Patent.

of the rails 15 and 16 are provided with grooves 18 and 19 respectively the forward ends of which are enlarged downwardly as at 20. Slidably engaged in the grooves 125 and 19 are the ends of a cross bar 21 which latter is provided centrally with spaced ears 22 between which is secured a tubular beam 23 of square cross section and having opposite sides thereof provided with longitudinal grooves 24 for a purpose that will presently appear. Adj ustably mounted in the bore of the beam 23 is a bar 25 which is adapted to be held in a desired adjusted position with respect to the beam 23 by means of a set screw 26. Mounted on the outer end of the bar 25 is a plate 27 to the free edge of which is hinged a cushion 28. Secured to the upper side of the beam 23 by means of a spring 29 is a leg supporting bar 30 which owing to its peculiar connection with the beam 23 will readily conform to the movements of the body.

Secured to the front rungs 13 is a vertical tubular member 31 having opposite inner walls provided with longitudinal ribs 32 which engage in corresponding longitudinal grooves 33 of a rack bar 34: whereby said rack bar is slidably mounted in the member 31. A spring pawl 35 is mounted on the member 31 for cooperation with the teeth of the bar 3% to hold the latter at a desired elevation. The upper end of the bar 34 is pivotally connected to a bracket 36 which latter has its upper end forked and the terminals of the resulting arm slidably engaged in respective grooves 21 ot' the beam 23.

By this construction it will be obvious that when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. l the cushion 28 can be readily adjusted to various elevations through the medium of the rack bar 34 and pawl 35. By disengaging the ends of the bar 21 from the portion 20 of the grooves 18 and 19 it will be apparent that the beam 23 can be readily moved to the folded position shown in Fig. 2.
