mamronnme DEVICE.
Application filed May 27, 1912.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARCHIE M. Bovine, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Devices, of which the following is a full, clear,
and eXact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to manifolding devices, and with regard to certain more specific features thereof, to receptacles adapted to contain a suitable filler and the upper surface of which forms a writing table.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a practical and compact device of the above character which will be cheap to manufacture.
Another object is to provide a simple and self-contained device in which sets of record sheets may easily be inserted and subsequently used most conveniently.
A further object is to provide a device of the above character which will be durable in construction and efficient in use.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing wherein is shown one of the various possible embodiments of this invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the complete device in operative position; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantially along the line XX of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a web as longitudinally folded for use in the receptacle and before being severed.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing and more particularly to Fig. 1, 3 denotes a receptacle of any desired size, the upper surface 4 of which is inclined downwardly toward the front, thereby to provide a convenient surface for supporting the record sheets upon which the transactions are recorded. The rcceptacle 3 is mounted upon a revoluble pedestal 5, the base 6 of which is adapted to rest on the top of a counter or table. By having the receptacle revolubly mounted in this manner it can be conveniently and quickly turned from one side to the other as when a salesman is in front of the counter Specification of Letters Patent.

instead of in his usual position behind the counter. A cover 7 may be hinged or detachably secured to the rear side of the receptacle 3, if desired, whereby the device may be closed at night and locked by means of a suitable snap-lock 8. The receptacle 3 contains a plurality of containers or drawer's, two .being shown in the present embodiment, 9 and 10, respectively. These drawers contain fillers which are preferably in the form of a continuous web folded back and forth upon itself transversely, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and also longitudinally, forming several superimposed strips. The ends of these webs are passed through a slot 11 in the upper surface l of the receptacle where the longitudinally folded edges are engaged by diagonally disposed knife-blades 12 secured to the top of the receptacle. These knife-blades which are inclined as clearly shown in Fig. 1, cut the folds and separate the web into a plurality of separate strips as the web is drawn through the slot 11.
As herein shown, the web 13 in the drawer 9 has but a single longitudinal fold so as to provide an original and duplicate strip. In this case only one knife-blade 1.2 is necessary, although two are shown in case it is desired to use a triplicate web as in the drawer 10, where the filler 14 has two longitudinal folds, one at each side, thereby A third drawer might be added if desired, in which a web of four or more strips is used. In this manner any reasonable number of records of a single transaction may be obtained in a device of this character, according to which section of the device is used. For instance, in a cash transaction in which the purchased article is taken away by the purchaser, a single copy may be all that is desired, while if the article is to be delivered, a
third copy, to be sent to the delivery departthe upper surface of the lower strips of the web 14. These carbon sheets are similarly retained by means of a cutting edge 22 on the receptacle.
The operation of this device is substantially as follows :After removing the cover 7 the drawers 9 and 10 are pulled out and the fillers placed therein. The end of each filler is then passed through the slot 11 so that it can-be easily reached from above and the drawers returned to normal position. After starting the knives or blades 12 between the strips,'they are pulled downwardly so that the webs are severed into a plurality of strips according to the number of longitudinal folds. After being drawn down to the lower edge of the table, the carbon sheets 18 or 20 are laid over the lower strips and the original or top strips placed above the upper sheet as shown. The cutting edges or retaining means 16 or 17 are then clamped in position and the device is ready for use. After recording the transaction the free ends of the strip .are drawn outwardly and torn off along the cutting edge, thus producing a plurality' of separated records of the transaction and the device is again ready for subsequent operations. As the carbon sheets become worn, they are similarly drawn out through their retaining means and torn off. a
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely difierent embodiments of this invention could be made Witl'IOUt departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire-to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a manifolding device, in combination, a receptable containing a plurality of webs, the upper surface of which is inclined downwardly toward the front, each web being folded back and forth upon itself longitudinally, means for cutting the web into separate strips, guides for maintaining the lateral edges of said strips in alinement, manifolding sheetsinterposed between the strips, whereby a plurality of records of a transaction may be obtained, and means for holding the free edges of said strips in position.
2. In a manifolding device, in combination, a receptacle containing a plurality of webs, the upper surface of which is inclined downwardly toward the front, means for cutting each web into separate strips, guides for maintaining the lateral edges of said strips in alinement, a plurality of carbon sheets interposed between the strips, capable of being moved transversely to the movement of the strips, and means for holding the free edges of the strips and carbon sheets in place.-
3. In a manifolding device, in combination, a receptacle containing a plurality of webs arranged side by side, the upper surface of which is inclined downwardly toceptacle being inclined downwardly toward the front adapted to be used as a writing table, means for cutting the webs along their longitudinal folds when withdrawn from the receptacle and laid over the upper surface thereof, said receptacle having recesses at the sides, and rolls of carbon paper in said recesses, the carbon paper'arranged to be drawn across the upper surface of the lower strips into which the webs are divided, whereby a plurality of records of a transaction'may be obtained.
5. In a manifolding device, in combination, a receptacle having an upper surface and containing a plurality of longitudinally folded webs, the upper surface of said receptacle being adapted to be used as a writing table, means for cutting the webs along their longitudinal folds when withdrawn from the receptacle and laid over the upper surface thereof, said receptacle having recesses at the sides, rolls of carbonpaper in said recesses, the carbon paper arranged to be drawn across the upper surface of the lower strips into which the webs are divided, whereby a plurality of records of a transaction may be obtained, and means pivotally supporting said receptacle whereby the same may be conveniently turned around.
