To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J nssn W. RENO, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements n Submarine-Destroyers, of which the following is a specifirelates to submarine desuch vessels should make contact with said device.
My nvention consists in providing a mpg to enter the 'same, in providing a net or other structure which normally hangs across the space and substantially in the plane bounded by said ring, in providing a movable member adapted to carry an explosive bomb in the lower part of said ring, and in providing member and said net whereby when a submarine enters said ring it will engage said net and thereby raise the bomb held in said movable member into contact with the sub marine and explode the same.
\ In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification Figures 1 and 2 are front and side views respectively of my invention. Fig. 3 is a detail of the lower part of the ring showing .the guard crease in which the explosive bomb is normally positioned.
Numeral 1 represents a ring preferably made of steel tubing which is suspended by the chain 2 from the fioat 3. Attached to the ring at intervals by means of hooks 5 is the web or net a which may be made of wire or Manila rope or chain.
The hooks 5 are made of such strength as to permit their straightening out or break- .ing when the net is engaged by a submarine.
At the sides of the rings I provide vanes 6, preferably made of heavy canvas or other similar material, the purpose of which is to retard the movement of the ring when the net is engaged by a submarine. At the botconnections between said movable tom of the ring I provide a sleeve 7 which is secured to the ring and through which passes the spar 8. The lower end of the spar has the ropes 9 secured thereto which ropes pass through the guides 10 and over the pulleys 11 and are secured to the net. At the upper ,end of the spar a bomb 112 is secured, the bomb being provided-. with any approved kind of detonator adapted'to explode same when. the bomb is brought up into contact with the hull of the submarine. The guard 13 is secured to the ring'and adapted to surround-the bomb and to prevent the displacement or explosionof the bomb in case the ring were contacted in any other manner than by a submarine entering the ring and engaging the net. The apparatus may be anchored or left free to drift with the current of the water in which it is placed. In the operation of the device, when the bow of the submarine enters the rings it will carry forward the net, the ring itself being retarded by'the vanes 6, and in carrying forward the net the spar containing the bomb will be elevated. into contact with the bottom of'the submarine and thereby explode the bomb and destroy the submarine. The extreme simplicity and relatively small cost of my submarine destroyer makes it feasible to use them in large numbers with out danger to any other type of vessels than tion with a ring and means for supporting said ring in the water, of an explosive bomb secured to said ring and means connected with sa1d bomb and said ring adapted to ex-' plode'said bomb. when a body enters said ring, said means being inoperative by con-' tact with bodies external to said ring.

In a submarine destroyer the combination with a ring and afloat attached therecal guide secured to the lower side of said ring, a spar adapted to move vertically in said guide having a bomb secured to its upper end, a stationary guard secured to said to inc-lose said bomb when said spar is in its lowest position, and conuections between said spar and said net whereby the displacement of said net from the plane of said ring elevates said spar.
