To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, Maillony STUART PLUMLEY, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding in the city of Pittsburgh, county of ture of oxygen and acetylene, or other in- `ments to be more flammable gas, to produce a iame of proper temperature for use in the welding of metals.
The objects of the invention are to provide a torch of the character mentioned which will be extremely simple in construction, efficient in operation, and in which the parts may be readily taken apart for repair or readjustment.
A further object is to provide an improved form of handle for a torch.
The invention consists in the improvefully described 'hereinafter and the novelty of which will be particulai-ly pointed out and distinctly claimed.
I fully and clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings to be taken as a part of this specification, and' wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a preferred embodiment of my invention. Fig. '2 is a plan view of the Aconstruction shown in Fig. 1, partly in section, and with parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical central longitudinal section through the torch head. Fig. 4 is .a longitudinal central sec-` tion through a control valve- Fig. 5 is atransverse section through the control valve shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a transverse section on the line 6-6 of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 1 designates a torch head which may be formed in one integral `piece or in two pieces as shown inthe drawing, and provided with a longitudinal bore 2 constituting a mixing chamber and also an outlet duct for the iniammable mixture to constitute the heating flame. This duct 2 opens. at one end through an end of the said head, as at 3, and at its opposite or inner end opens into an intermediate chamber 4,l said i chambers 2 and 4 being preferably separated by a constricted passageway 5. 'At its end opposite from that opening into the passageway 5, the chamber 4 is surrounded by a shoulder 6, beyond which -the head 1` is formed with a circular recess 7, said recess Joining at its rear end with a socket 8 opening through the extreme rear end of the 'headand having its inner wall threaded, as at Extending through the chamber 4"is an ingector nozzle 10, the deliveryend of which opens into said constricted passage-- wav 5, and the rear end of which is formed with an'enlargement 11, preferably closely fitting the walls of` therecess 7 and provided with an intermediate shoulder 12, adapted to be seated upon the shoulder 6, heretofore described.- Threaded into the said socket 8 isa perforated plug 13 adapted'to engage the rear end of said enlargement 11 on the injector nozzleso as to hold the latter firmly in position against the said shoulder 6,here tofore described. The opening or perforation through the plug 13 is shown at 14, and
jector nozzle 10 which extends through the chamber 4 is preferably made less than the dialin-ter of said chamber, so that an annular space 17 is provided between the injector nozzle and the wall of the chamber, for' a purpose to be presently setforth. rThe head 1 is provided with upper and lower pipe nipples18, 19, formed integral with said hezd and opening respectively into' the socket 8 and the chamber4, heretofore described. The nipple 18 is adapted to be connected to, a supply pipe for supply of oxygen, and the nipple 19 is adapted to be connected to a supply pipe for acetylene or 1 proper combustible gas.
I preferably provide simple and effective means whereby the nipples 18, 19, may be detachably connected to the supply pipes. Each of these nipples is provided with eX- terior threads 2O and internal cone sockets 21, which sockets are adapted to receive flanged cone 'heads 22 on the-supply pipes 23, 24,-respectively, said heads and nipples being connected by flanged nuts 24a engaging the threads 20 and the flanges on said cone heads. By this arrangement the head may be quickly attached to and detached from the supply pipes 23, 24. The pipes 23, 24, are connected at their rear ends to a double valve casing 25 adapted to be connected by nipples 26, 27, respectively, to suitable sources of combustible gas and oxygen. In the valve casing 25 is a turn plug 28 having cross passages 29, 30, by means of which flow through the valve to the pipes 23, 24, is simultaneously controlled.
vIn the acetylene supply pipe 23 is interposed a turn plug casing 31, said casing containing a turn plug 32, by means of which the How is controlled relative to the supply of oxygen. The turn plug is provided with a rearwardly extending stem or handle 33, extending rearward in convenient relation to the handle 34, whereby the operator, when grasping the handle 34, may conveniently operate the acetylene v,control turn plug with his thumb. j
The handle 34 is located betweenthe Valve casing 25, and the casing 31 .and is preferably composed of two similar sections, each consisting of a semi-cylindrical hollow body 35, having end walls 36, said end Walls being each provided with recesses 37, so that, when the parts 35 are assembled on the pipes 23, 24, a hollow" cylindrical handle is provided in which the end walls abut so that the recesses 37 form spaced openings surrounding the pipes 23, 24, and maintaining them in parallel relation. The handle secv tions 35 may be secured together `in any suitableI manner, but preferably by clamping screws 38 extending through registering bosses or sleeves 39'formed integral with the inner faces of the said sections. By this Aarrangement I provide 'a handle which is easy to grasp, and which not only is maintained cool because of its hollow Structure, but also serves to maintain the rigidity of the pipes 23, 24, and hold them in parallel oxygen flowing relation.

A wire gauze 38 may be placed between the plug 13 and the rear end of the enlargement 11 of the injector to prevent any particles of dirt orv grit from entering the latter.

A welding torch head having a longitudinal mixing chamber, an outlet from the mixing chamber at one end of the head, an intermediate chamber at and opening, into the inner end of the mixing chamber, a shoulder surrounding said intermediate chamber, an injector seated on said shoulder and extending through said chamber and delivering into the mixing chamber, said body having a threaded socket in rear of the injector, a perforated plug threaded into said socket and engaging the rear of the injector, and a closure for the socket, said body having inlets leading respectively to said intermediate chamber and said socket.

A welding torch head having a longitudinal mixing chamber, the walls of said chamber being constricted toward each end thereof, an outlet from 'the mixingvchamber at one end of the head, an intermediate chamber at and opening into the inner end of the mixing chamber, an injector seated in said intermediate chamber and having its nozzle delivering into themixing chamber, a threaded socket in rear of the injector, a closure plug threaded into the socket and spaced from the injector, and inlets leading respectively to said intermediate chamber MARION STUART PLUMLEY..v
