To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EWEN M. GILLIns. a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Dorchester, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Iron- Molders Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to molders tools, and contemplates particularly the provision of a stop-off tool for iron molders, designed for the purpose of making up that part of a mold or core print which the core does not entirely fill.
The primary object of the invention s to provide a tool of this character which 1s adapted for use in making up core prints over any size core within a given range up to the capacity of the tool.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool of the character described which may be used over round, hexagon, elliptical, triangular or other shaped cores.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the tool to a mold. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tool removed from the mold. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4: is a view of one of the filler reeds or bars.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a mold box or flask, containing a body of sand or other molding medium 2 formed to provide a mold cavity 3 having in its side walls the prints or recesses 4 to receive the core 5 which may be of any preferred diameter and cross sectional contour. The tool or stop-0E device comprises a body 6 consisting of a plate of sheet metal or other suitable material. This plate is provided with a suitably shaped top surface 7 and a bifurcated or forked lower portion 8, the latter being preferably curved on the arc of a circle and providing a core receiving passage or recess 9.
The plate is provided with a forwardly extending flange or rim 10, which is of maximum width above the forked or bifurcated portion 8, being reduced to approximately one-half its width below such point. The lower portion 11 of the plate, which is connected with the reduced portion 10 of Specification of Letters Patent.

and displacing such portions which are preferably of segmental shape, and which serve as handles whereby the tool may be supported in operation with one hand, the formation of said handles leaving openings 15 in the plate through which the hands may be also inserted to enable the tool to be readily grasped and manipulated.
By the construction described a space or chamber, bounded by the flange 10, is
formed above the offset portion 12, and eX tending across this space or chamber, at a point about midway of the height thereof is a bracket bar 16, extending between the diametrically opposite sides of the flange. Suspended from this bar is a series of filling reeds or rods 17 which extend across said space or chamber between said flanges and rest against the bearing portion 11 and depend into the recess 9. The said reeds or rods being provided with rearwardly bent hooks 18 for engagement with the cross bar 16, the bills of which hooks lie between said bar and the plate 6 and thus cooperate with the part 11 to firmly sustain and support the reeds in position.
When the core 5 of the character described is fitted in position in the mold, and it is necessary to make up any deficiency of space which the core does not entirely fill, the stop-off or filling device is inserted into the mold cavity with its lower end arranged so that the bifurcated or forked portion straddles the core 5 and the device forms a cooperating wall for use in conjunction with the core to produce the desired area and shape of a mold chamber. When the device is thus fitted in position, in which it may be held or supported in any preferred manner, the reeds 17 are slidably adjusted so that they will fit about the core, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, thus closing the unoccupied space, as will be readily understood. It will be evident of course that the reeds may be adjusted so that they will collectively form a wall which will fit about any shape or diameter of core, the advantages of which will be apparent. In the event that a pebble should lodge between the reeds, the tool can be taken from the mold and the pebble removed by pushing it through the reeds with a pin or other sharp pointed instrument, whereby the pebble Will be dislodged through one or the other of the openings 13.

2. A device of the character described comprising a body having a core receiving recess, and slidably adjustable members movable in said recess and adjustable to conform to the contour of the core.
3. A device of the character described comprising a body having a core receiving recess, and a series of longitudinal parallel reeds, extending in said recess, said reeds being adjustably mounted on the body so as to be grouped in the recess to conform to the contour of the core.
4:. A device of the character described comprising a body having a core receiving recess, a suspending bar, and adjustable reeds having means slidably engaging said bar.
5. In a device of the character described comprising a body having a core receiving recess, a suspension bar, and reeds provided with hooked portions slidably adjustable on said bar.
6. In a device of the character described comprising a body, a forked lower end forming a core receiving recess, a flange upon the body forming a space or chamber in rear thereof, a bar extending across said space or chamber, and a series of longitudinally extending slidably mounted adjustable reeds projecting into the core receiving recess and having hooked ends slidably engaging the bar.
