Be it known that I, JOSEPH MCCARTHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin, inv the county of Varren and "State of Ohio, have' invented certain new and useful improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing This nventionrelates tov valves such as are commonly used to cut off thelpflow of waterto a tank when the'tank has been lilled to the desired level.
The object of the invention is to provide such a valve that can be easily kept in workin'g' condition: u
To this end it is a further object of the invention to so construct the valve that 1t rwill be automatically cleaned, thereby 'preventing" the corrosion c-r accumulation of matter on the valve to an extent that would interfere with the proper operationof the valve; and further to so construct the valve andthe valve actuating device that the valve member may' be removed without disconnecting any part of the valve body or imparting movement to any part of the valve other than the movable valve member.
Itis also an object of the invention to provide means' for automatically locking' the valve against displacement during the filling operation. y

ber'11, lt will be n( ticed that this arrangement is brought about by providing the casing 1 with a central partition 12 arranged substantially Vmidway between its ends and providing the partition and the top wall of the casing with openings 8 and 10, respectively. The'valve member 9 is, as stated, slidably mounted in these guide openings fc-r movement into and out of engagement with the valve seatand it comprises a body portion having two enlargements 13 and 14 fitting, respectively, in the openings 8 and 10 and serving to guide th-e valve in its movement. These enlarged portions of the valve are of such a'length and are so arranged withreference to their respective openings that the corresponding edges o-f the valve and of the openings will pass upon each complete movement of the valve, that is, the lower edges of the enlargement will pass into th-e respective openings as the valve moves upward and the upper edges of the enlargements will pass into the respective openings when the Vvalve moves downward. This'construction of the valve member produces a cleaning action in that the passing edges serve to prevent any accumulation of matter or corrosirn which would interfere with the operation of the valve. The chamber 11 is provided with openings or ports 15 to permit of the escape of the fluid which seeps past thelower enlargement 13 of the valve, thus'allowing this seepage to pass into the tank and prevent- `ing the water accumulating in the chamber 11 and offering resistance to the movement ofthe valve member,` as would be the case in the absenceof the po-rts 15.
The actuating device forthe valve member 9 is Vpreferably in the form of an arm arranged above the casing 1 and movable toward and away therefrom. This arm is arranged out of alinement with the guide opening 10 and the valve is connected thereto by means of interlocking parts carried by the arm and the `valve` respectively. Thus, the valve can be readily removed from its guide opening by merely disconnecting the interlocking dcvices,witliout disconnecting anyother part of th'evalve mechanism. The valve actuating 'arm-.ishere shownl zit-1G andH is pivotally mounted on a bracket 17 carried by the casing 1. That portion of the arm adjacent to the end of the valve casing is provided with an offset portion Vwhich is here shown as an annular enlargement 18 of a diameter greater than the diameter of the enlarged portions of the valve and the space within this annular portion of the arm is in alinement with the guide opening and the upper portion cf the body of the valve extends through the same. To connect the valve with the arm the annular enlargement of the arm is provided with bayonet slots 19 to receive the opposite ends of a pin 20 eX- tending through and rigidly secured to the body of the valve. The inner end of each horizontal ortion of the slot is preferably provided with a shallow recess 21 to receive the adjacent end of the pin 20 which will be held in said recess by water pressure, thus preventing the accidental displacement of the valve.
The valve arm 16 is connected with a float and, in the present instance, the float is shown at 23 and is mounted on the end of an arm or lever 24 which is on a bracket 25 carried by the discharge spout 4e of the valve and which controls the operation of the valve. This lever is connected by means of a link 26 with the valve actuating arm 1n such a manner that the downward movement of the fioat will raise the valve actuating arm and the valve member, thereby opening the valve and permitting the entrance of the water into the tank. The valve member is usually provided at its lower end with a seat engaging portion'of rubber, or other more or less yieldable material to cause a more perfect contact with the valve seat. The repeated contact of the valve with the valve seat causes a depression or indentation to be formed in this yieldable portion of the valve and thereby causes the valve to move downward a greater distance than it did when new. A very slight variation of the movement of the valve will cause a relatively large movement of the float about the end of the arm 24: and the variation of the movement of the valve will result in a marked variation in the amount of water which must enter the tanlI before the valve is closed by the action of the float. I have, therefore, provided means for adjusting the length of the float arm to compensate for this variation in the movement of the valve. To this end that portion of the arm 24 which is carried by the bracket 25 is formed separately from the body of the arm, as indicated at 34, and is provided with a slot arranged between the axis of the arm and the float and arranged at an inclination to the horizontal, as shown at 35.
The body of the arm 24 is provided with a laterally extending stud 36, which, in the present instance, is formed by bending the end of the arm and which extends through the slot 35 and is provided with a thumb nut 37. The portion 34 of the arm 24 is provided with a guide portion 38 which may be formed by bending the end of the part 3-1 of the arm at right angles to the body thereof and providing the same with an aperture to receive the arm 24, thus holding the arm against movement about the axis of the stud 36. This construction enables the arm to be adjusted to compensate for the variations in the movement of the valve. It will be noted that the body of the valve member fits loosely within the annular portion 18 of the arm 16, thereby permitting' a slight lateral displacement of this annular portion of the arm due to its pivotal mounting. I also prefer to provide means to prevent the displacement of the valve member during the filling operation. To this end I have provided the body of the valve member 'with a longitudinal slot 27 arranged in the upper portion thereof and have formed the arm 16 with a spur 28 extending in front of this slot and adapted to be moved ito the slot when the arm is moved upward to open the valves. Thus, the valve member is held against rotatory movement and any vibration to which it sage of the water the arm. Y
Valves of this type are commonly provided with what is known as a refilling pipe, 29, which is connected with the valve casing or discharge spout. In repairing the valve, or for other reasons, it is sometimes necessary to disconnect this refilling pipe and I have, therefore, provided a special form of connection which will facilitate the connecting anddisconnecting ofthe pipe, and further, have provided means for regulating the flow of water through this refilling pipe. To this end I have provided the refilling pipe 29 with an elbow which is screwed into the spout 1 1-, and have mounted a valve 33 in the spout to control the ow of water through the refilling pipe.
Nhile I have shown and described one embcdiment of the invention it willbe understood that this has been chosen for the purposes of illustration only, and that I do not desire to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled will not disconnect it Vfrom in the art. yAnd further, I wish it to be understood that while the invention is designed primarily for use in connection with float valves many of the features thereof are applicable to valves which are operated or controlled by means other than floats.
Having` thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. mg a guide opening in alinement with said valve seat, a valve member slidably mounted in said opening for movement into and out of engagement with said valve seat andremovable from said guide opening, an actuating arm mounted adjacent to said casing but out of alinement with said guide opening, said arm and said valve member having interlocking parts arranged for movement into and out of engagement bythe rotation of said valve member, said arm and said valve member also having parts arranged to be brought into cooperative relation when said valve member is moved to its open position, to prevent the disengagement of said interlocking parts.

In a valve, a casing comprising a cham ber having an inlet and an outlet and provided With a valve seat, said casing also having a guide opening in alinement with said valve seat, a valve member slidably mounted in lsaid opening for mcvement into and out of engagement with said valve seat and removable from said guide opening, and an actuating arm mcunted adjacent to the casing and out of alinement with said guide opening, said arm and said valve member havingv interlocking parts arranged for movement into and out of engagement by the rotation of said valve member, said valve member having a recess and said arm having a part arranged to enter said recess when said arm is moved in a direction to open said valve.

In a valve, a. casing comprising a chamber having an inlet and an outlet and provided With a valve seat, said casing also having a guide opening in alinement with said valve seat, a valve member slidably mounted in said opening for movement into and out of said engagement with said valve seat and. removable from said guide opening, and an actuating arm mounted adjacent to said casing, but out of alinement with said guide opening, said arm and said valve member having interlocking parts controlled by the rotation of said valve member and also havest ing means to normally resist the rotation of said valve member' When it is in either its open or its closed -position.

Ina valve, a casing comprising a chamber having an inlet and an outlet and provided With a valve seat, said casing also having a guide opening in alinement With lsaid valve seat, a valve member slidably mounted in said opening for movement into and out of engagement with said valve seat and removable from said guide opening, said valve member having a part extending beyond the end of said valve casing, an actuating arm movably mounted adjacent to said casing, extending transversely to said valve member and having an annular portion adapted to receive said valve member, said annular portion being of a diameter greater than the greatest diameter of said valve member, whereby said valve member can be Withdrawn from said guide opening through the annular portion of said arm, said annular portion of said arm having a bayonet slCt and said valve member having a pin adapted to enter said slot, a part carried by said arm and adapted to be moved into engagement With said valve member to hold the same against rotatory movement and thus prei ent the separation of said valve and said arm.

In a valve, a casing comprising a chamber having an inlet and an outlet and provided With a valve seat, said casing also having a guide opening in alinement with said valve seat, a valve member slidably mounted in'said opening for movement into and out of engagement With said valve seat and removable from said guide opening. said valve member having a part extending bevond the end of said valve casing, an actuating arm movably mounted adjacent to said casing, extending transversely to said valve member andv having an annular portion adapted to receive saidv valve member, said annular portion being of a diameter greater than the greatest diameter of said valve member, whereby said valve member can be withdrawn from said guide opening through the annular portion of said arm, said annular portion of said arm having a bayonet slot and said valve member having a pin adapted to enter said slot, said valve member having a slot. a spur secured to said arm and arranged to be moved into and out of said slot bv the movement of said arm.

In a valve. a casing comprising a chamber havine' an inlet and an outlet and provided With a valve seat. said casing also having a guide opening in alinement with said valve seat, a valve member slidably mounted in said opening for movement into and out of engagement with said valve seat and removable from said guide opening and extending beyond the end of said casing, an actuating arm movabl-y mounted near the ber.

In a valve, a hollow casing having a partition dividing the same into two chambers, said partition being provided with a guide opening, one of said chambers having an inlet and an outlet and also having a valve seat arranged in alinement with the opening in said partition, the other of said chambers having a relief port, and also liaving' a guide opening arranged in alinement with the opening in said partition, a valve member slidably mounted in said casing for movement into and out of engagement with lsaid valve seat and having enlarged portions .i'itting within the respective guide openings,
said enlarged portions being of such a size and so arranged that the longitudinal movement of said valve will carry the ends of said enlarged portions past the respective edges of said openings, and an actuating device to impart movement to said valve mem- 9. In a valve, a hollow casing having a partition dividing the same into two chambers, said partition being provided with a guide opening', one of said chambers having an inlet and an outlet and also having a valve seat arranged in alinement with, the opening in said partition, the other of said chambers having a relief port, and also having a guide opening arranged in alinement with the opening in said partition, a valve member slidably mounted in said casing for movement into and out of engagement with said valve seat and having enlarged portions fitting within the respective guide openings, said enlarged portions being of such a size 'and so arranged that the longitudinal movement of said valve will carry the ends of said enlarged portions past the respective edges of said openings, said valve member also having a part extending beyond the end of said valve casing, an actuating arm pivotally mounted on said casing, extending transversely to said valve member and having a portion extending about the projecting end of said valve member and arranged out of alinement with said guide opening, whereby said valve member can be withdrawn from said opening, said arm and said valve member having interlocking parts to operatively connect them one to the other. In a valve, a casing comprising a chamber having an inlet and an outlet and provided with a valve seat, said casing also having a guide opening in alinenient with said valve seat, a valve member slidably mounted in said opening for movement into and out of engagement with said valve seat, and removable from said guide opening, an actuating arm mounted adjacent tothe casing but out of alinement with said guide opening, said arm and said valve member having ccperating parts to connect them together, a second arm operatively connected i with said actuating arm, said second arm comprising two parts, one of said parts being pivctally mounted on a fixed support and connected with said actuating arm and also having an inclined longitudinal slot,
of engagement with said valve seat, a controlling arm mounted adjacent to' said casing and comprising two parts, one of said parts being pivctally mounted on a fixed support connected at one end with said valve and having an inclined slot, the second part or said arm being slidably mounted on the first part of said arm for bodily movement .longitudinally thereof and having a projection extending through said-slot and means for securing said projection in adjusted positions in said slot.
