Theinvention relates to improvements in separable fasteners, and more particularly to the lateral-closing, head and sockettype of such fasteners, the same embodying a resilient retaining means to prevent the acci dental separation of the parts thereof under ordinary strains or conditions of usage.
The primary object of the inventionisto provide a comparatively simple and ineX-f pensive construction of the character mentioned, and, one which embodies an attractive, yet conservative, design, and highest efiiciency for the purpose, ing devicesiof this type. 7 c' a t The invention resides in the'certain-new and novel construction Which will be hereinafter morefully described, set forth in the appended claims, and illustrated inthe accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1. is an enlarged bottom plan view thereof, Fig; 2 is a front elevatioinFig. '3 is a longitudinal section on the l1ne3-3 of Fig. .2, Fig. at is a horizontal section on the line ll of Fig 3, Fig. 5 is-a fragmentary vertical section on the line 55 of Fig. 4. Y 7
Referring tothe accompanying" drawing, in which similar characters of preference refer to corresponding parts in the several provedconstruction of the invention, the
same consisting of a single piece of sheet material, preferably sheet-metal, shaped to provide a body substantially U-form in cross-section, and having its side walls, and
one of its end walls, curved or rounded, as shown. These side and end. walls terminate in an inwardly rolled formation11, disposed within the body and arranged to provide a shank-engaging channel ,12- therebetween. The edge of this rolled formation 1lis shaped to provide a second rolled formation l3- of a size approximately one-half of that of the" formaj Applicationfil'ed August10,1915. serial no. 44,718.1

' n -1 l The opposed walls of the Chainnel 12;-,- immediately adjacent the open end thereof, are flattened, as at to i provide a flared entrance thereto. r
Disposed within therolled formation l3 is a substantially U-shaped resilient 7 member "15, preferably formed of spring wire, having its parallel members formed to I provide opposed bent portions -l6, which project into the channel '-12+ through" suitable slots or openings 17 formed in the opposed Walls of therolled formation -'11 for the purpose; The resilient mem-T -be1-- isretained firmly in position by means of a struck-out tongue 18+, formed in the free edge of the rolled formation 7. 13, preferably at a point medially of the connecting portion thereof, which ad-- 7 mits of unrestricted movementof the par allel members, but prevents the latterfroni becomingtotally displaced from'their operative position. Suitable openings 19 areprovided' in the top wall of the socket -10T, by means of which the-latter may be secured in any: desiredposition upon the articleto be fastened, either thread or other suitable fastening means being passed through the said openings for the purpose.
A shank 20-,' having a relatively fiat head -21 and a supporting disk or plate V 22-1, comprises the second element of the I invention, and the same is'adapted to be inserted laterally into engagement with the socket 10. 20 being very slightly less than the dis tance between the opposed Walls of the channel 12+ to admit of easy sliding engagement' of. the same there\vith', while the diameter of the head 21is slightly less than the distance between'the outer orop- The diameter of the shank positelydisposed walls of the smaller'rollecl formation 13, and of a thickness sufi: cientfor com'parative free sliding engage 'ment: with the opposed wall of the socket -10 and the top wall of the rolled forma tion.
The supporting-plate or disk"-22' is provided with a plurality of openings -23 for the passage therethrough of any desired fastening means by which the headed shankmay be secured in position for 00- operative engagement with the socket member. When the two elements of the separable fastener, thus provided, have been other article to be" fastened, the headed properly positioned uponthe garment, or V the diameter. of the shank towadmitofa.
slight longitudinal movement of the latter therein. This free longitudinal 'movement tends to relieve the fastener of; an excess of the strain usually brought 7 to bear upon fasteners when used on-v articles of wearing apparel. It is to be notedof the supporting plate.22 that its diameter is approximately equal to the width, of the socket +lO-. v I a 7 Having thus fully described theinve'ntion,
what is claimed, is 71 V I 1. A separable fastener comprising a socket memberformed to provide inwardly rolled side walls, and having a :channel eX- tending longitudinally therebetween, the forward ends of said rolled sidewalls being flattened to provide a flar'edentrance to said channel, a headed-shank adapted to be engaged in said channehan inner rolled wall formation continuouswith said trolled side ivalls,', and resilient means inclose'd; by said inner rolled wall formation and pro"- jected within saidchannel through openings formed in said rolled side walls for retaining said shank in its en aged position, said a shank having slight free movement 'WllllllIl said channel when in such engagedposition. 2. A' separable fastener comprising a socket member formed to provide inwardly rolled side walls and having a channel. ex
tending longitudinally therebetween, the forward ends of said rolled side walls being flattened to provide a 'fiared entrance to said channel, a headed-shank adapted to be engaged in said channel, an inner rolled wall formation continuous with said irolle'd side walls, resilient means inclosed by said inner position., a I
3.
