To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBIN ERNST, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Chemnitz, in the Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices for the Needles of Circular-Knitting Frames; and

I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in looking devices for the needles of circular knitting frames.

-When performing the narrowing operation in circular knitting frames provided with rocking jacks the separate needles are thrown into or out of operation by means of the rocking jacks which are adapted to shift the lower ends of the cooperating needles in axial direction relatively to the cylinder. If the thickness of the jacks or the needles is not exactly alike, so that there is a certain clearance in the bearings of the same, or if some of the parts are bent out of their correct positions, there is a liability of the rocking jacks and the needles getting out of engagement with each other, one or more of the needles engaging in the jack which is adjacent to the proper jack. Thereby the parts of the machine are liable to break.

The object of the improvements is to so construct the needles and cooperating jacks, that this objection is removed.

With this object in view my invention consists in providing means for closing the jacks at their sides, so that the needles are always carried along in a reliable way and can not get out of engagement with the proper jacks.

For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawing, in which the same letters of reference have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring to the example illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, the jack a is in the usual form, and it is formed in its upper arm with a slot 6. Near the upper end of the upright arm a and to one side thereof a plate 0 is secured by suitable means such as rivets or the like. As shown the said plate extends across the slotted portion '6. By means of the said plate the needle 6 is prevented from getting out of the slot 6 of the jack at one side thereof, the plate of the adjacent jack which is disposed close to the rearv face of the jack preventing the needle from getting out of the slot at the opposite side. This construction will preferably be provided where the pitch of the needles is small.

In the example shown in Figs. 5 and 6 at space for providing two plates between ad-- jacent jacks. As in this construction two plates are provided between adjacent jacks,

In both examples the plates are made in separate pieces which are secured to the j acks by riveting. But I wish it to be understood, that my invention is not limited to this feature. i

I claim: 1. The combination of a rocking jack of a circular knitting frame, a needle project.- ing into the slotted upper arm of said jack, and a plate fixed on the side of said arm extending across the slot to prevent lateral movement of the needle.

2. The combination of a plurality of rocking jacks of a circular knitting frame, a needle projecting into the slotted upper arm the example shown in Figs. 1

of each jack, and. a plate fixed on one side only of each arm and extending across the slot thereof, said jacks being mounted in such close proximity to each other that the signature in the presence of two witnesses, this third day of March 1914.
