UNITED STATES SYLVANUS DECKER AND FRAZEE AYRES, OF RAHWAY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,265, dated July 25, 1371.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, SYLvANUs DECKER, of the city of Rahway, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, and FRAZEE AYREs, also of the city, county, and State aforementioned, have invented certain Improvements inVashing- Machines, of which the following is a specification: Y
Ourinvention relates to an improvement in that class of washing-machines wherein the cleansing is effected by means of a dasher moving in aboX and agitating and compressing the fabric to be cleansed; and consists in the combination of a perforated dasher with perforated side pieces, the side pieces being pivoted to the body of the machine and havin g their upper edges attached by rods to the lever or handle of the dasher, thereby acquiring a motion correspnding with the motion ofthe dasher, though in an opposite direction, the object being by this motion to induce agitation in the mass of clothing and water in the machine, and, by the alternate compression of the masses of clothing between the dasher and each of the side pieces, to force the water through the clothing, thereby removing all dirt from the same.
The accompanying drawing represents a crosssection of the machine, showing its general construction.
A is is the box forming the body of the machine, which should be substantially constructed and water-tight. B is the perforated dasher, operated by the lever C. D D are the perforated side pieces, which are pivoted at c c to the ends of the box and connected at b b, by the rods E E, to the lever, the rods being fasten ed to the lever above the axle F, which sustains the lever and serves the purpose of a fulcrum.
In operating the machine the box should be partly filled with water and the fabric to be cleansed placed between the dasher and-side pieces; then, on operating the lever, motion is communicated to the dash er and side pieces, the whole mass in the machine is agitated, and, the clothing being alternately compressed on each n side of the dasher, the Water is forced through it and all dirt removed.
