Specification of Letters 1atent.

' Application filed May 24, 1915. Serial No. 29,966.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM RosEN, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachments, of which the following-is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for guiding fabrics with respect to the sewing line whereby a uniform margin or hem may be attained on goods of unlimitedlength.
The principal object is to provide a novel and thoroughly eflioient device, which may be attached to any of'the ordinary types of sewing machines, that will fold and deliver,
able and the material operatively guided and controlled automatically without .man-
ual labor or constant supervision, thereby. making it possible for an operator to attend and in which Figure 1 is a partial side elevation of a sewing machine, showing the application of the attachment. Fig. 2 is a' plan view of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken on line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4. is an enlarged longitudinal sectionalview, showing the goods guide.
The device is attached to the table 10 of the sewing machine at the front, near. the end, in such position as to cause the fabric to move in the path of the needle 11 under the presser-foot 12 operated in the head 13. It comprises a bar '14 having angularly in advance of the. .needle, .any length of fabric, and particularly such as is used in the manufacture of handkerchiefs, the marginal. folding or depth of hem being adjustturned ends 15 I extending away :from the table 10 and pivotally secured to these ends by bolts 17' are arms 16, the outer ends ofthe arms having extending between them a round rod 18 having adjustably mounted on it a pair of slidable guides 19 between which the fabric moves. Also 'adjustably engaged to the angular ends 15' are a pair of slotted links 20, held by the, bolts 21 and formed integral with abar 22, the bar beingadjustable angularlyv and slotted to receive. an adjustable guide 23 whioh'may be clamped in ,any desired position by thev set screw 24.
An offset portion 25 of the guide 23 extends alongside the bar 22, and is turned so as to form a loop 26 having a reentrantmember 27 extending backward about the portion 25, being spaced therefrom to receive the fabric and foldit upwardly atan angle of substantially 90 degrees preliminary to its passage through the hemmer 29. This operation is further assisted by the plate 29 which forms part ofthe hemming attachment customarily employed.
From the foregoing it will be obvlous that a strip of material of any length whateverv will be properly supported by the rod 18, between the guides 19, and the edge turned orfolded over as it passes through the loop 26 which is capable of adjustment lengthwise with respect. to the hemmer plate 29.
'When'once a piece of fabric has been inserted no further attention need be paid to it thereby enabling an operator to care for several machines dividing their time be-v tween them as may be required.
Having thus described my invention and specified its application and use, whatI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I v 1. In a strip guiding attachment, a frame, a horizontal rail, bars pivoted to said frame carrying said rail wherebyit may be raised or lowered, guides adjustable lengthwise on said rail, a bar having downturned slotted ends pivoted-exteriorly of Stud frame, means for securing said bar in an adjusted position, a looped fabric folder having an open outer end, adjustable lengthwise of said bar and, means for maintaining said folder in an adjusted position on said bar.
2. In a strip guiding attachment, a frame, an adjustable support rail over which the fabric passes, guides movable on said rail, a folder into which the fabric may be freely entered from one end thereof, supports for said folder. said supports being adjustable said folder in.an adjusted position.
Signed at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York this twenty-first day of May A. D. 1915'.
