Description
UNITED STATES WILLIAM YOUNG, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPRESSlON-BIBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,233, dated July 18, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM YOUNG, of Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compression-Bibs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in a compression-bib, provided with an additional lower valve to operate conjointly with the upper or regular valve, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use Y the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a longitudinal vertical section of my improved compression-bib.
A represents the inlet-pipe, B the outlet-pipe, and C the regular valve OI' a compression-bib. The inlet and outletpipes do not communicate direct with each other, as is usually the case, but through an opening, a, above which the valve Gis placed. Below this opening is an additional valve, D, so constructed and arranged that the pressure of the water, aided by the spring b, will close the same when the upper part of the bib is removed for repair. This lower valve D is kept constantly open by the compression of the upper valve. It is only when the upper valve is removed that it closes, thus making the bib answer both for its purpose and also as a stopcock.
This improvement may also be applied to plug or ground-in work, the additional valve being placed horizontally. When plug or ground-in work leaks, it must invariably be replaced by a new one; and where in the compression the additional valve is relieved and closed by the removal of the inside parts, just so with the plugwork. By unscrewin g the cock, which is necessary when it leaks, the valve is relieved and consequently closes.
This improvement is very advantageous in its application to hydrants and fire-plugs, as will be readily understood.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The lower valve D, provided With. spring b, and arranged so as to be kept constantly open by the compression of the upper valve, and closed by the action of the water, aided by the spring, when the upper valve is removed, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM YOUNG.
