Be it known that I, li jxm'nn E. Fnos'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuel-Economizers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for promoting combustion and more particularly to means for introducing atmospheric air into the combustion chamber adjacent the connection therewith of the smoke flue.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device of this character especially designed for use in connection with cook stoves, and which is equipped with peculiarly constructed means for con trolling the supply of air through said device.
It is well understood that with the ash-pit and furnace doors closed, there is a tendency to vacuum in the combustion chamber which is utilized for the purpose of drawing in air to promote combustion. In order that air thus drawn in may be utilized to the best advantage, it is necessary to raise its temperature to a high degree. One reason for this is that carbon monoXid or the products of imperfect combustion require that the air shall be at a high degree of temperature before the oxygen thereof is available for combination therewith to produce carbon dioXid. In the formation of carbon dioXid more than three times the number of heat units are liberated than in the formation of carbon monoxid, and hence the conversion of all the carbon monoxid to carbon dioxid is desirable.
In carrying out this invention, a peculiar construction of air conducting means is provided through which the currents of air induced by the lowering of pressure in the combustion chamber must pass, and inductive force of the current of air to carry back a certain portion of the products ofcombustion passing from the stove is utilized so that the temperature of the air will be raised by intimate contact with the hot products of combustion and the imperfectly consumed Specification of Letters Patent.

lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully do scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a plan view of a cook stove equipped with this improvement, parts being broken away to show the device in operative position; Fig. 2 is a side view with part broken out and in section; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail front elevation of the valve shown in closed position; Fig. l is a similar view with the valve partially open; Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on the lin 5-5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a detail horizontal section taken on the line 66 of 5.
In the embodiment illustrated, a cook stove S is shown having the ordinary combustion chamber C at the top thereof which communicates with the smoke flue F in the usual manner.
The device constituting this invention comprises an air conducting pipe 1 constructed to conform to the shape of the stove to which it is to be applied, and which is here shown arranged around the outer edge of the combustion chamber C with one end extending upwardly and disposed under the smoke flue F as shown at 2, and having its terminal 3 downturned so that the air discharged therefrom will be directed into the combustion chamber below the communication with the smoke flue. The other end of this pipe 1 opens through one side wall of the stove adjacent the fire boX thereof and is here shown provided with internal screw threads and abutting a clamping washer 4: which in turn bears against the inner face of said stove side wall. An externally screw threaded nipple 10 is secured at one end to the threaded end of the air pipe 1 and at the other end to a circular nut member 5, the latter having a centrally disposed threaded opening 5 therein to provide the aforesaid connection. This nut member 5 is here shown provided with air ducts 6 on its outer face which are arranged diametrically opposite each other to provide for the admission of air at all times from the sides of the nut to the interior thereof which communicates with the pipe 1 for a purpose to be described.
A circular cover 7 is pivotally mounted on the nut member 5 by a bolt 8 and is provided with a radially extending handle 9 for actuating it. This cover 7 is designed to swing laterally for covering and uncovering a greater or less portion of the end opening 5 in the nut member to permit more or less air to pass in through the nipple 10 to the air pipe 1 as may be desired.
In the operation of this device which is practically in the nature of an injector, atmospheric air is supplied thereto and drawn in through the ducts 6 of the nut member 5 and drawn through the pipe 1 and discharged into the combustion chamber C at a point directly below the smoke flue F. This air which as above stated, is drawn in by the tendency to vacuum in the combustion chamber C, is drawn in a continuous stream and discharged through the clownturned terminal. 3 of said pipe where the at mospheric air and the products of combustion will mix and thereby insure a perfect combustion. The arrangement of the pipe 1 around the combustion chamber causes the air conducted therethrough to be raised to a temperature sufiicient to make its oxygen available for the purpose of combining with the carbon monoxid to convert the same into carbon dioxid, and thereby greatly promote combustion.
The cover 7, as above described, may be swung into any desired position for exposing more or less of the air inlet opening 5, whereby the passage of the air currents through the device may be regulated and controlled.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device to be used in connection with a stove having an opening through one of its walls, an air pipe within said stove, one end of which is disposed opposite said opening and being provided with internal screw threads, an'externally threaded nipple extending through said opening and having the threads on one end thereof engaged with the threaded end of the air pipe, a nut member having an internally threaded opening therein, the latter receiving the other end of said nipple, the outer face of said nut member being provided with diametrically opposite grooves communicating with the opening therein to provide air ducts, and a cover plate pivotally mounted on said nut member to close the opening therein.
2. In a device to be used in connection with a stove having an opening through one of its walls, an air pipe within said stove, one end of which is disposed opposite said opening and being provided with internal screw threads, an externally threaded nipple extending through said opening and having the threads on one end thereof engaged'with the threaded end of the air pipe, a. circular nut member having a centrally disposed internally threaded opening there in, the latter receiving the other end of said nipple, a washer disposed between said end of the air pipe and the inner face of the wall of the stove to provide a tight joint, the outer face of said nut member being provided with diametrically opposite grooves communicating With the opening therein to provide open air ducts, a circular cover plate disposed adjacent said nut member to close the opening therein, and a pivot bolt extending through said cover plate and into said nut member to pivotally mount the former to the latter.
