To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH B. WIEGEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Magnolia, in the county of Rock and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hood Fasteners and Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fasteners and locks and more particularly to a hood fastener and lock for an automobile. I
The primary object of my invention rethe casing and associated with the locking mechanism for controlling the locking mechanism and further ,provides an improved means for operating the locking mechanism, the operating means being removably associated with the casing.
-A further object of my invention resides 'in the provision of an improved resilient means for mounting the casing, the latter being preferably carried by the frame of the vehicle. a r
A still further object of my invention resides in the provision of a novel means carried by the hood for receiving the casing, the latter having novel means associated therewith for facilitating the removal of the casing-from the securing means.
A still further object of my invention resides in the provision of a device of the character described that is simple in construction, efficient in operation and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.
Other-objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims forming a part of this specification.

Referring more particularly to the draw- .ings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the different views, I provide an anchor plate 1, the latter being secured to the frame 2 of the vehicle by suitable fastening devices 3 and further provided on the raised ortion thereof with'a transverse slot 4:. D sposed upon the raised portion of the plate about the slot 4is a cylinder 5, the upper end of which is open and in which cylinder is slidably mounted a piston head 6, the latter having a rod 7 extending therefrom through an opening-8 in the bottom of the cylinder and through the slot 3 into the interior of the raised portion. A coil spring 9 is disposed about the rod betweenthe head 6 and the bottom ofthe cylinder for a purpose to be hereinafter described. In order-to hold the free end "of the rod within the raised portion of the plate, I have disposed a washer 10 about the same, the washer bearing against the under surface of the raised portion. about the slot 4: and prevented from downward movement on the rod by means of a pin 11 extending transversely through the rod and arranged 1n close relation therewith. The upper end of the cylinder is threaded as at 12 and is arranged in threaded engagement with the tapering projection 14 formed on the lower end of the casing 15, the upper end of which casing has a pair of oppositely disposed trunnions 16 extending laterally from the sides thereof, the trunnions being removably engaged in the vertically a1:- ranged recesses 17 in the upper ends off the supporting bars 18 secured in spaced parallel relation to the outer sides of the-hood-19 by means of suitable fastening devices 20. By this arrangement the recesses will prevent lateral and transverse Increment of the casing with respect to the hub and because of this arrangement the efiicient operation of the locking mechanism is facilitated. For
the purpose of facilitating the removal of the trunnions 16 from the recesses 17, I have provided the upper outer edge of the casing 15 with a finger piece 21.
In order to securely lock the casing and prevent the surreptitious removal of the same, I have extended partitions 22 from the opposite sides and formed substantially intermediate the ends of the rectangular casing 15 and have arranged the outer ends of the partitions in spaced parallel relation and have further slidably mounted on the same a bolt 23, one end of which is reduced and rounded and arranged for engagement with the circular opening 24: in the side of thecasingandis further arranged in alinement for engagement, at times, with a transversely extending recess in the inner side of one of the bars 18. In order to guide the bolt and prevent the same from having unnecessary movement, I have disposed a leaf spring 26 on the upper surface thereof, the latter bearing against the projection. 27 within the casing. A coil spring 28 is disposed between the inner end of the bolt and one side of the casing for facilitating the sliding movement of the casing. In order to actuate the bolt 23, I provide a key 29 and arrange the same, at times, in the key hole 30 in the plate 3 1, the latter being removably secured in the casing by means of suitable fastening devices 32. lhe key is engaged in the notch 33 provided on the under surface of the bolt. The key is easily rotated and is in no way interfered with by the partitions 22 which are suitably spaced as above stated. For the purpose of controlling the movement of the bolt 23', l have provided a pin 34 and extended the same longitudinally through the upper part of the casing and arranged the same for engagement, at times with a recess 35 formed upon the top surface of the bolt. It can be easily seen that when. the key 39'is rotated and engaged in the notch 33, the bolt will be forced rearwardly, whereupon the pin as will engage the recess 35 and prevent the outward movement of the bolt, until. desired.
The operation of my invention is as fol.- lows: Assuming that the trunnions 15 are out of engagement with the recesses 1'? and it is desired to lock the hood to the frame, the finger piece 21 is engaged by one hand of the user (not shown) and lifted against the tension of the coil spring 9 within. the cylinder until the trunnions are in a position. above the upper ends of the bars whereupon they are placed in alinement with the re c'esses 17 and released, thus securing the hood to the frame. The pin 34 is new lifted upwvardly out oiengagement with the recess 35 in the top of the bolt whereupon the coil spring 28 will shove the bolt through the opening 24 and into the recess 25 in one of the supporting bars 18, the bolt being guided during its movement by means of the leaf spring 26 positioned Within the casing, thus securely locking the hood to the frame. When it is desired to remove the bolt 23 from ngagement with the recess 25, the key 29 is inserted in the key hole 30 and rotated until the inner end. of the key is engaged in the notch 33whereupon the bolt will be slid inwardly and when in alinement with the pin 34, the latter will drop due to the weight on the upper end of the same and automatically lock the bolt within the casing. In order to remove the trunnions 16 from engagement with the recess, all that is necessary is to lift the same by means of the finger piece until they are above the plane of the upper ends of the bars 18 and pull the same outwardly.
Although I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I desire it to be understood that I am not limited to the exact details shown, -however,'l desire that great stress be laid upon the arrangement of the movably mounted casing, the latter having locking means mounted therein and associated with the securing means for the casing, for securely locking the casing.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it can easily be seen that I have provided a 95 device that is simple in construction containing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be'placed upon the marlret and sold at a minimum cost.
it will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general and preferred embodiment of my invention and various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may be made within the scope of the appended claims and without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desirerto secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fastener and lock including a movably and resiliently mounted casing, engaging means projecting from the upper end oi the casing, securing means for receiving the engaging means, said securing means preventing movement of the casing, and locking mechanism disposed within the easing and associated withthe securing means for preventing surreptitious removal of the casing.
2. A fastener and lock including a movably and resiliently mounted casing, trun-. nions projecting from the upper sides of said casing, a pair of supporting bars pro vided with recesses in their upper ends for receiving said trunnions, and locking mechanisrn disposed within the casing and associated with one of the supporting bars for preventing surreptitious movement of the casing.
3. A fastener and lock including an anchor plate provided with a slot, a cylinder disposed upon the plate, a rod extending through the cylinder and connected to the plate, a coil spring disposed about the rod, a head formed on the upper end of the rod for engagement with said spring, a casing secured to the upper end of the cylinder, means for detachably securing the upper end of the casing, said securing means preventing movement of the casing, and locking mechanism disposed within the casing and associated with the securing means for preventing the surreptitious removal of the casing. A fastener and lock comprising an anchor plate provided with a slot, a cylinder disposed upon the plate, a rod extending through the cylinder and connected to the plate, a spring disposed about the rod, a head on the upper end of the rod for engagement with said spring, a casing se cured to the upper end of the cylinder, trunnions extending from the opposite side of said casing, a pair of supporting bars provided with recesses in their upper ends for receiving said trunnions, and locking mechanism in said casing for removable engagement with one of the supporting bars for preventing the surreptitious removal of the casing.
5. A fastener and lock comprising an anchor plate provided with a slot, a cylinder disposed upon the plate, a rod extending through the cylinder and connected to the plate, a spring disposed about the rod, a
head on the upper .end of the rod for engagement with said spring, a casing secured to the upper end of the cylinder, trunnions extending from the opposite side of said casing, a pair of supporting bars provided with recesses in their upper ends for receivder disposed upon the plate, a rod extending through the plate and connected to the plate, a spring disposed about the rod, a head on the upper end of the rodfor engagement with the said spring, a casing secured to the upper end of the cylinder, engaging means on the casing, supporting means for receiving the engaging means for preventing accidental movement of the casing, a bolt slidably and resiliently mounted in the casing for removable engagement with the supporting means, said bolt provided with a recess, means for operating the bolt, and a pin slidably mounted in the easing for engagement with the recess in the bolt for removably holding the bolt out of engagement with the supporting means.
