T 0 all whom t may concern Be it known that we, FREDERICK H. Drorran'r and VILLIAM R. ROHRBACH, both citizens of the United States, respectively residing at Beading and Sunbury,y in thev counties of Berks and Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grate-f Valves, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates particularly to stop valves in which the liquid passage-way is closed by the lowering of a; gate valve.
ln order that the valve may be properly seated around the iow passage opening it is necessary to extend the 'valve chamber below the bed of the flow passage so as to peru mit proper descent ofthe valve; but the, depression or pocket thus formed tends to collect heavy matter carried by the flowing liquid so as to nevertheless prevent proper lowering of the valve.
Our invention consists in providing in the chamber a` movable false-bottom which is positively operated by the valve so that when the latter is opened the false-bottom will be positioned in approximate alinement with the passage-way and prevent access of sludge, stones, or like material to the depressed pocket, while the lowering of the valve will automatically displace the falsebottom so as to surely permit its proper seating.
The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof, and the novel features are particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section showing only one half of a valve casing and the parts therein, with the latter represented in raised position; and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in lowered position; the duplicate valve disks, shown in the two figures being jointly operated. Fig. 3 is a half cross-section corresponding with Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a similar section corresponding with Fig. 2; and Figs. 5 and 6 are corresponding sectional plan views on the lines 5-5 and G-G respectively of Fig. 3.

To provide for normally cuttingl off the lower chamber extension 3, so Ias to prevent the collection of obstructing matter therein and at the same time present an un-V broken bed forthe liquid flowing through the casing, I employ a pair of false-bottom shutters 10, 10a, suitably mounted within the valve chamber-3 of the casing so as to be positively swung into either open or closed position, by the lowering or raising of the valve. These shutters, as shown, are suitably pivoted within the casing, at points 11, 11a on'opposite sides and preferably in the horizontal axial plane of the flow passageway, so that the curved lower portions thereof may be swung together to form a closed bottom in line with the bed of the passageway as indicated in Figsyl and 3, or swung apart so as to open the chamber extension 3a for descent ofthe valve as indicated in Figs-2 and 4. Each shutter is provided, as shown, with an upper valve-engaging portion 12, above its pivot point; so that the reciprocating valve will contact with these portions to positively swing the shutters to closed position in the act of opening the valve, while the closing of the latter freely swings them to open position as indicated in Figs. 2 and 4. The opposing inner faces of these upper portions 12, 12 of the shutters, are provided with ribs 14, forming guide ways adapted to retain the valve disks 6, 6 in proper relation during their reciprocating movement.
It will be readily seen that both the opening and closing movements of the valve automatically and positively operate the shutters, so as to advantageously cut off the chamber extension 3a when the valve is open while at the same time permitting its free closure.
' The specic construction set forth may obviously be modified without departing from the invention.
W hat we claim is:
l. A stop valve having a casing with a' valve chamber and a communicating flow passage-way, a. gate valve, means iorreversely moving the latter to open or close said passage-way, and a false-bottom shutk valve chamber and a communicating iow passage-way, a gate valve, means for reversely moving the latter to openor close said passage-way, and a pair of false-bottom shutters pivotally mounted in said Chamber and arranged to be positively swung in reverse directions by operation of the valve.
