WALTER E. SANDS, E FANWOOD. NEW JERSEY.
- MEANS EOE. SECURING JUuc'rIo -EoxEs. IN cErLINes AND :WALLS.
T 0 allwhom it may concern: v r i 7 .Be it known that I, WALTER E. SANDS, acitizen of theUnited States, and residing at Fanwood, the county of Uiiionand State of New Jersey, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements 1n Means for Se curing" Junction-Boxes in Ceilings, and
device of this class which is comparatively inexpensive and which may beconveniently and easily used or appliedfand with this and otherobjects in view the invention consists in a device of the ClaSS'SPGClfiGQ COIL- structed and operated as hereinafter described and claimed. V
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in I each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a section through a part of a floor and ceiling construction and showing my improvement and'the method of its use, part of the construction'being in section; Fig. 2 a simi1ar=view showing the method of using my improvement in a vertical wall construction; Fig. 3 a perspective view of the main part of my improvement detached and, Fig. 4 a partial section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing forming part ofthis specification, reference'being made to Fig. 1, I have shown a part of a fioor and ceiling construction involving two parallel beams a on which is laid a floor?) and to which is sea cured a ceiling c and, in the practice of my invention, I providea junction box securing device at which, in the constructionshown, involves a yoke-shaped member having two diverging arms or side members d and d connected at d, and the arm d is provided at its free end with a foot piece d at right angles thereto .and in which are formed holes (Z and the arm d is pointed at its free end as shown atd. 'I also mount on one of the arms d cZ preferably the arm d a stud screw 6 which may be adjustedlongitu- *a pnatibfl filed aim 19, 191i. is riai n'o. 867,338.
'of said arm and secured in any de;
sired position by means of .a set screw e and the head portion'of said screw is pro. vided with laterally directed Wings 6 havmg holese through which,"in practice, thev i f Specification of Letters Patent. 5 Patented Feb. 15', 1916. i
electric wires. are passedfand said wings formsupportsmand guidesQfo-r said wires which'are passed into the junction box f in I the usual manner, but as thesewires and method of usingthemform no part of this invention theyare not shown.
In the use of this device the stud screwe isfpassed through ,the'. junction box, as
clearly shown in Fig. ,1, and'said screw is provided within the box, with anut g and the back of the box with a collar or washer 9 to strcngthen'the same, and in this manner the junction vbox maybe secured inthe ceiling construction, as will be. readilyunderstood, andthe projecting portion 6 of the stud screw 6 may be used for thepurpose of attaching or securing any kind or class of an electrical attachment or fixture.
In securing the device cl to one of the beams a, the yoke-shaped part is held with the separate arms in the same vertical plane and a hammer is used on the end d to drive the pointed end (I of the arm (Z intothe beam and nails h are driven through. the
holes d and the foot 62 and the arm d serves'as abrace for the arm'd and the device is thus easily and quickly secured in position.
In Fig. 2 of the accompanying have shown at 2' two of the vertical beams of a wall construction and the method of using my junction box holderror support therein,
drawing, I
and in this case also the separate arms 03 In both forms of constructiomthe yoke shaped member-of the support is so placed that the arms thereof are in a vertical plane, but this is not necessary and in the ceiling construction the yoke-shaped partof the device may be so placed that the arms thereof will be in a horizontal plane, and this method of using the device will be preferable when the ceiling construction, or the beams a thereof are of slight vertical dimen- 310118- My invention is also not limited to the use of the stud screw 6 as means for securing the junction box to the yoke-shaped part of the device, and other forms of attachment adapted to be connected with and adjusted longitudinally of the yoke-shaped part of the device may be employed, and the form and construction of the yoke-shaped part of the device may also be varied, and changes in and modifications of the details of the construction herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A support for junction boxes, comprising a yoke-shaped device having diverging side arms one of which is provided at its free end with a laterally directed foot member, the other arm being pointed atits free end, and a junction box attaching device adjustable longitudinally of said yokeshaped device.
2. A support for a junction box, comprising a yoke-shaped device adapted to be secured to one of the beams of a ceiling or wall construction and to project horizontally in the direction of an adjacent beam and an attaching device for junction boxes mounted on said yoke-shaped device and adjustable longitudinally thereof, or toward and from the adjacent beam.
3. A support for junction boxes, comprising a yoke-shaped device having diverging side arms one of which is provided at its free end with a foot member, the other arm being pointed at its free end, and a junction box attaching and wire supporting device adj ustable longitudinally v of said yoke-shaped device.
In'testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 16th day of October, 1914.
