My invention relates to doors and more particularly to metallic doors employed for store-rooms.
My invention contemplates a door constructed in such a way as to permit expansion of the door frame and the plate mounted thereon, and in addition, the door is built up in such a way as to minimize the number of operations necessary to make a complete door.
My invention consists of a frame of suitable structural shapes, and a plate, the tops and side edges of which are pressed into firm engagement withthe edges of the frame. In mounting the plate upon the frame, there is no riveting done whatsoever. The edges of the plate are crimped and then the plate is slipped over the frame and subsequently the crimped edges of the plate are pressed into engagement with the frame. This arrangement provides a structure whereby the edges of the door are greatly improved in appearance. The mounting of the plate upon the frame without the use of rivets prevents the buckling of the parts in case of fire. a
My invention will be better understood by referring to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevational view of a door embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on line 33 of Fig. 1. Referring first to Figs. 4:, 5 and 6, I have illustrated a rectangular frame comprising the side members 7 and 8, and the top and bottom members 9 and 10, respectively, and intermediate members 11. All these members are bars of angle iron, and are connected by means of angular pieces 12-l2. It will be noted that the top and side members present a surface lying in one plane and the bottom member 10 presents a wide surface of the side of the angle bar to the floor. After the frame has been constructed it is ready to receive the plate 13 and in order to prepare this plate to be slipped over the sides and top of the frame, the top and side edges 11 and 15 respectively are crimped along the dotted lines'as shown in Fig.6, and are forced into the positions as shown in Fig. (3. After this crimping action has been completed, the plate 13 is slipped over the franie, after which the top and side edges 14 and 15 respectively are pressed or stamped into firm engagement with the edges of the rectangular frame. It will thus be noted that very few operations are required in order to construct a door of the class described, the riveting being employed only to connect the different members of the rectangular frame. After the plate 13 has been put in place upon the framework the hinges 16l(3 are mounted upon the completed door and the latching members 18-18 are also put in place connected by means of the rod 19.
As shown particularly in Figs. 2 and 3, the edges of the completed door present a, rounded appearance and thus improve the door to a great extent, in addition to having a solid bearing surface against the metallic parts of the opening in the .wall. The bottom of the door presents a wide surface to the floor and thereby strengthens the lower portion of the door, in addition to preventing the flames, in the case of fire, from passing underneath said door.
It will be obvious that my invention provides a door which is constructed in a manner radically different from anything in the prior art, and has advantages which the structures of-the prior art do not possess.
