This invention relates to a folding-oar lock and has for its principal object the production of an efiicient oar lock which may be quickly moved to a set-up position so as to receive an oar and easily move with the swing of the oar but which may be easily moved to. a folded position so as to be positioned out of the way when not in 1 ;of'the device and remain in a socket thereby -preventing the accidental displacement of the lock member when the same is not in use. A still further object of this invention is the production of a folding oar lock in which the sleeve is rotatably or pivotally mounted so as to easily swing with the movement of the lock member, this look member being slidably' mounted upon a sleeve so as to be capable of being lifted j and then swung downwardly so as to rest upon the body portion of-thedevice.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will, be seen that'the device comprises a body as indicated in general by 1. This body comprises the top 2-having the curved side walls-3 terminating in the flat base portion 4 in which there are formed the openings '5. This body is adapted to be placedupon the upper side portions of a boat 6 sofas to allow suitable securing means to be passed through the openings 5 for fixedlyv retainingthe body in position. This'body has an enlarged thickened lock 7 formed integr'al'upon the inner portions of thetop 2 and the'side walls 3 as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. A vertical openingS is formed so as. to extend through the thickened portion 7 and communicate with the outer portions of the body 1.
The sleeve which is used in connection with this device is indicated by the numeral 9 and this sleeve has a pin 10 extending transversely through its lower portions as shownin Fig. 3. This pin 10 is adapted to upon its upper end and since this shoulder 11 has a flat lower surface 12 it will bear evenly uponthe upper portions of the top 2. Therefore, the'sleeve 9fmay freely rotate within the vertical opening 8 as desired but since the shoulder 11 bears upon the outer portions of the top 2 and the'pin 10 will bear upon the lower portion of the; thickened portion 7, it will be impossible to"accidentally remove .f or displace the sleeve after the device has been assembled.
The sleeve 9 is also provided with a pair of alined slots 13 extending longitudinally and with a notched between the slots 13. The lock member comprises a yoke portion 15 formed integral upon the shank 16 while the bearing shoulder 17 is formed intermediate the yoke 15 and the shank 16. This shank 16 is solid'and is adapted to fit within the sleeve 9. When the device is assembled the pin 18 may be passed through the'lower end of the shank so as to project portion 14 interposed I beyond the side portions thereof and fit within the alined slots 18 formed in the sleeve 9. Therefore, it will be seen that the shank may extend downwardly through the sleeve 9 so as to allow the shoulder 17 to bear upon the upper portions of the shoulder 11 formed upon the sleeve. is passed through the yoke 15 of the lock member and is actuated in the usual manner for rowing a boat, the pin 18 will cause the sleeve 9 to pivot within the vertical opening 8 formed in the thickened portion 7. l Vhen the device is not in use however,

The top 2 of the body 1 is provided with a curved groove 19 communicating with the channel 20 by means of the pocket 21. It
will be seen that the shape of the channel 20, the pocket 21, and the curved groove 19 constitute a socket portion in the upper portions of the body 1. which will conform in shape to the lock member and therefore when the lock member is swung downwardly so as to rest upon the upper portions of the body 1 it will fit snugly within the socket formed by the channel, pocket, and groove and will be prevented from being accidentally displaced. Therefore, when the device is not in use, the lock member will be retained in its correct position upon the upper portions of the body 1 without danger of slipping or accidentally moving from the upper portions of the body. If it is so desired, when the lock member is swung to a set-up position, the sleeve may be swung or pivoted one-half of a revolution so as to allow a portion of the shoulder 11 to overhang the end' of the channel 20 communicating with the vertical opening 8 and will thereby relieve considerable strain upon the shank 16 owing to the fact that the sleeve will engage the shank at a higher point than it would if the notched portion 1 1 were allowed to remain in registry with the channel 20 and at the same time it will be seen that by having the channel portion closed in this manner even though the lock is lifted until the pin 18 reaches the upper portion of the slots 13, it will be impossible for the lock member to be swung downwardly inasmuch as the notched portion will not register with the channel portion which will allow the lock member to pivot.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the lock member may be retained in a compact folded position when not in operation but it may be easily swung to a set-up position so as to positively retain an When the oar when in operation, whereby when the oar is actuated it will impart a pivotal movement to said sleeve by means of said lock member, said lock member being capable of being lifted and-then swung so as to rest upon dental displacement, said sleeve provided with a pair of alined slots, a lock member carried upon said sleeve and provided with a snanl; positioned therein, a second pin extending through the lower end of said shank and extending through said slots, said lock member being adapted to carry an oar, whereby upon the actuating of the oar said lock member will impart reciprocal rotary movement to said sleeve, said lock member being adapted to be lifted until the upward movement thereof is limited by said second pin engaging the upper ends of said slots at which time said lock member may be swung downwardly so as to rest upon the upper portions of said body and be posi- 'tioned in a compact manner when not in 'displacementsof said sleeve, said sleeve provided with a notch formed in its upper side portion, a lock member carried by said sleeve and provided with a shank extending thereinto, means carried by said shank and engaging said sleeve for preventing the displacement of said lock member, said lock member being adapted to be actuated by an Oar extending therethrough whereby reciprocal rotary movement will be imparted to said sleeve, by said lock member when the same is operated, said lock member belng capable of being lifted, means for limiting the upward movement of said lock member, said lock member being adapted to be swung downwardly through the notch formed in said sleeve so as to rest upon the upper portions of said body when not in use.

In a device of the class described, the combination of a body, said body having a vertical opening formed therein, a sleeve rotatably mounted within said opening, a lock member positioned upon said sleeve and provided with a shank extending thereinto, means for retaining said sleeve in engagement with said body, means for holding said lock member in engagement with said sleeve, said lock member being capable of swinging said sleevewhen said lock member is actuated by an oar, said lock member being adapted to be lifted when not in operation and to be swung downwardly upon the upper portions of said body, and means for retaining said look member in a central compact position upon said body when not in use. In a device of the class described the combination of a body, said body provided with a vertical opening, a sleeve rotatably carried within said opening, said sleeve provided with a notched portion, means for retaining said sleeve in engagement with said body, a lock member carried upon said sleeve, said lock member provided with a shank extending thereinto, means for retaining said lock member in engagement with said sleeve, said lock member being capable of sliding upon said sleeve whereby said lock member may be lifted when not in use and then swung downwardly through the notch formed in said sleeve so as. to rest upon the upper portion of said body, said body provided with a socket formed upon In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
