Description
COATING OR PLAST C MPOSITIONS,
Cross Reference REINHOLD LANSTROM, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOSITION STEATITE PENCILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,084, dated July 18, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REINnoLD LANSTROM, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Composition Steatite Pencil and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a new and improved composition steatite slate-pencil and mode of making the same, as follows:
The composition of which the pencils are to be made is formed by mixing one (1) part of carbonate of lime with nine (9) parts of pulverized -steat1te and moistening it with silicate of soda to the consistency of very stiff paste or lnolders sand. The massis then exposed to the atmosphere from twelve (12) to fourteen (l 4) hours, until it becomes settled or begins to harden. It is then passed between two or more rollers for wgr k igg or kneadin it, which is repeated until t'fie pnste is'oi an even temper, entirely free from lumps or hard grains. The paste is then rammed into a cylinder or receiver, from which it is forced,
by means of great )ressure by a piston or the like working in said cylinder, through formers or m I l nozzles for drawn 1g or reducing the mass to the shape of the pencils required, which may be of any approved size.
The pencils are now placed on boards or plates, Where they remain exposed to air for four (4) or five (5) days, after which they are placed in a kiln or heater constructed for that purpose, and subjected to heat gradually increasing to about four hundred and fifty 450 degrees until they become hard and complTF 'rnese'penens do not scratch, and can be used on blackboards or iron as well as slates.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to seciu'e by Letters Patent- 1. As an article of manufacture, the improved steatite pencil, composed of the ingredients herein described, mixed in the proportions and substantially in the manner specified.
2. The herein-described mode of making the pencils of the said compound, said mode comprising the several steps by which it is treated successively in the order substantially as specified.
