To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that we, ASA SMITH and CHARLES F. CARR, citizens of the United States, residing at Antwerp, in the county of Paulding and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvesters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in harvesters and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with beets and the like; and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby the lifted beets or the like are caused to be delivered to the elevating mechanism.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved harvester whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with referenceto the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through a harvester constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention; Fig. 2 is a view in top plan, detached, of the supplemental or vertically swinging frame herein included;

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, A denotes a supporting axle, to the.
extremities of which are affixed the wheels W and pivotally engaged with said axle A and projecting forwardly thereof is the frame F of requisite configuration and having secured to the forward extremity thereof the draft beam B.
Operatively supported by the rear. portion of the frame F and disposed transversely thereofis a shaft 1 operatively engaged, as at 2, with the axle A, said connection being herein disclosed as intermeshing gear wheels of a predetermined ratio Specification of Letters Patent.

Depending from the draft beam B at a predetermined point longitudinally thereof 1s a guide loop 3 through which projects an extension 4 of the supplemental or vertically swinging frame 5. As herein embodied, the extension 4 is pivotally engaged with the depending loop 3 through the medium of a removable pivot 6 disposed through registering openings 7 and 8, the openings 7 being disposed longitudinally of the loop 3 while the openings 8 are disposed longi tudinally of the extension 4 whereby it will be perceived that the connection between the extension 4 and the guide loop 3 may be varied or adjusted as the dictates of practice may require. 1 t
The frame 5 is substantially U-shape in form and pivotally engaged, as at 9, with the free extremity of each of the stems of the frame 5 is a link 10 in pivotal engagement with the crank 11 of the shaft 12 rotatably supported by and disposed transversely of the frame F at a point in advance of the shaft 1. Also in pivotal engagement with the crank 11 of the shaft 12 is a link 14 in pivotal connection with the angular extension 15 disposed forwardly of the lever 17 at the lower extremity thereof, said lever being pivotally engaged, as at 18, with the rack member 19 secured to the strap 20 supported by the frame F and arranged transversely thereof. It will be readily perceived that upon proper movement being imparted to the lever 17, the frame 5 may be vertically adjusted about its pivot 6 whereby our improved harvester may be caused to assume either an operative or inoperative position relative to the surface over which it travels,
The extension 4; of the frame 5 at a predetermined point intermediate its length is provided with a vertically disposed opening 21 through which is loosely directed the standard 22 of the cutting member C, whereby it will be readily perceived that said cutting mechanism will be capable of unhindered vertical movement in order to compensate for any unevenness of the surface with which it is adapted to c'oact. At a point above the extension 4 the standard 22 has disposed transversely therethrough a cotter pin 23 or the like for limiting the downward movement of the standard and pivotally engaged with the standard at a point below the extension 4is a link 24 also in pivotal engagementwith a lug 25 depending from the extension 4 at a predetermined distance in advance of the opening 21, said link 24 serving to prevent the standard 22 from binding within the opening 21 as the machine advances.
As herein embodied the lower end portion 26 of the standard 22 1s disposed rearwardly and downwardly on a predetermined inclination and has its lower front edge ortion formed into the cutting ed e 27 w 'ch is adapted to split the tops 0 the plants as the machine advances in order to facilitate the severance of said tops when engagiad by the horizontally disposed substantia y shape cutting member 28 carried by the lower end of the portion 26 of the standard 21 with the apex thereof positioned rearwardly of and in close proximity to the cutting edge 27 and in alinement therewith.
The inclined lower portion 26 of the standard 22 is rovided with the rearwardly disposed de ecting wings 29 arranged in forwardly converging planes and adapted to throw the severed tops of the beets or the like to opposite sides of the row, in a manher and for a purpose which is believed to be self-evident.
The opposite sides of the frame 5 at a predetermined point in advance of the rear extremity thereof are provided with the transversel disposed depending extensions 30 having edly secured to their inner faces at their lower extremities the elongated transversely spaced lifting members 31 disposed longitudinally of the machine and having their forward extremities disposed on such a taper as to engage the beets and lift the same from within the..soil.
In order to facilitate the lifting action of the members 31, we position at the forward end of each of said members and at a predetermined point thereabove the rotary disks 32 adapted, upon the forward advance of the machine, to cut a furrow at a side of the row and to-throwthe dirt to one side thereof and, as herein embodied, each of these rotary.
disks 32 is supported by the lower extremity of an arm 33 depending from an adjacent side of the frame 5.
Secured to the sides of the frame 5 and interposed therebetween adjacent the rear extremities thereof is a depending yoke 34 disposed on a requisite incline and terminating adjacent the rear extremities of the lifting members 31 and having secured to the'base thereof the comb 35 over which the lifted beets are adapted to pass to be delivered to the elevating mechanism E, to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
In order to assure the proper passage of the lifted beets over the comb 35, we pivotally engage with the axle A the" elongated forwardl directed plarallel arms 36 adapted to exten between t e sides of the frame 5 and having their forward extremities connected by the shaft 37 from which radiate the arms 38 terminating in the forks 39 adapted to engage the beets and impart the re uisite rearward movement thereto.

As herein set forth, the elevatin mechamsm E comprises the spaced para lel side members 43 suitably tied or connected adj acent their opposite extremities, as indicated at 44, and havin coactin therewith the top boards 45, the ower en portions of said side members 43 and the top boards 45 bein secured to the arms 46 depending from an loosely engaged with the axle A while the opposite end portions of said side members 43 and top boards 45 are secured to the arms 47 projecting rearwardly from and loosely engaged with the shaft 1 whereby it will be perceived that said elevating mechanism E will be maintained in .a fixed position relative to the machine proper.
Interposed between the side members 43 and the elevating mechanism E adjacent the opposite extremities thereof are the drums 48 around which is disposed the endless member 49 preferably of such construction as to readily permit the falling of dirt or soil as loosened from the beets, and, as herein set forth, the uppermost drum 48 has an ex- -tended shaft 50 to which is secured a sprocket 51 having disposed therearound the chain 52 also directed around an enlarged sprocket 53 fixed to the shaft 1 whereby the requisite travel of the upper stretch of the endless member or apron 49 is obtained. The elevat-' ing mechamsm E is adapted to discharge within the basket 54. i It may be well to state at this time tha the lever 17 is provided with conventional latch mechanism 61 to coact in a well known way with its rack member 19. It is also to be observed that the arms 36 are tied or connected by the transverse member 62 whereby the same may be caused to move about the axle A in unison and in order to limit the downward movement of said arms ,of the shaft 12 and adapted to be engaged thereby when swung upwardly to elevate theframe 5 and whereby it will be perceived that said arms 36 will also be caused to move upwardly.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a harvester constructed in accordance with our invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out our invention in practice.
We claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a main frame, a supplemental frame pivotally supported thereby and movable in a vertical plane, a crank shaft rotatably supported by the main frame and disposed above the supplemental frame, a link connection between the supplemental frame and the crank shaft, means for axially rotating the crank shaft whereby the supplemental frame may be vertically adjustable, lifting means carried by the supplemental frame, a second supplemental frame terminating above the lifting means, a rotatable member carried by the last named frame, means for rotating said member, and a flexible connection between said last named supplemental frame and the main frame for nating above the lifting means, a rotatable member carried by the last named frame,
means for rotating said member, and a flexible connection between said last named supplemental frame and the main frame for limiting the downward movement of the named supplemental frame, said flex1ble connection being so positioned as to be engaged by the crank shaft upon upward movement "of the crank shaft whereby both of said supplemental frames may be moved upwardly in unison.
