Description
UNITED STATES PATENT EEroE.
THOMAS C. CLARKE AND ADOLPHUS BONZANO, OF PHILADELPHIA, PA.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,048, dated July 18, 1871.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS C. CLARKE and ADoLPHUs BoNzANo, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Connections for Iron and Steel Bridges 5' and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making apart of this specication, in Which- Figures l, 2, and 3 represent, respectively, side, sectional, and end views of an improved mode of connnecting Wrought-iron columns by means of a cast-iron or steel joint-box having pockets for lateral struts and holes for eyebolts that unite the struts and columns.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and ,use our invention, we will proceed to describe the struts or braces V are passed pins c, -Which pins also pass through the eyes of eyebolts c, Which eyebolts, it' the struts are diametrically opposite each other on the joint-box, pass into the center ofthe joint-box, and are there caught, held, and tightly drawn up by a turn or screw-buckle, j'. If a third or a single strut is to be connected with the joint-box similar provision is made to receive it, but its eyebolt c should extend clear through the joint-box, and be caught and held there by a nut outside of said box. rlhe top and bottom of the joint-box are made to receive and hold columns, if so desired, or one only if but one is to be used. Ii' four struts are used then they can be held in pairs by the turn-buckle j', as described. The tie-rods NV, when used, may be united to the pins c by means of straps g.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim herein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a joint-box and with lateral struts thereon, the pins passing through the struts and through the eyes ofthe adjustable bolts which pass into or through said joint-box, substantially as described.
THOMAS C. CLARKE. A. BONZANO. Vitnesses A. B. SToUeHToN, EDMUND MAssoN.
