BOTTLE-CLOSURE.
Application filed April 3, 1914. Serial No. 829,322.
tles and more particularly to closures for use on milk bottles or the like, in which it is desired to provide a closure which will keep the contents of the bottle clean and sanitary v and in which the closure itself will be of a clean, sanitary and neat appearance.-
The invention embodies, among other features, the provision of a closure which will not only close the opening of the bottle but which will also cover and completely inclose the upper part of the neck of the bottle and over which the milk or other fluid is usually floured when the bottle is tilted after removing the cover therefrom, thus-preventing foreign matter or germs from accumulatin on that portion of the bottle over whic the fluid is adapted to be poured.
The invention still further embodies the "provision of a simple and effective closure that can be cheaply manufactured and which will prevent foreign matter or germs from passing around its edge and. entering the neck of the bottle.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying .drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters. of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan View of the bottle showing the closure applied thereto, parts being broken away to disclose the underlying structure; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of the upper portion of the bottle, showing the device applied thereto, with parts broken away todisclose the underlying structure and the closure shown in section;
and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevation of a modified form of my device.
Referring more particularly to the yiews, I disclose a bottle 1 having the usual neck 2 provided with an opening or mouth 3, the said bottle having small tapered sides 4.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1916.
The bottle, after being filled, is provided with a top or closure and which consists, more particularly, of a flat disk-like portion 5 terminating in a depending outwardly diverging annular flange 6, the parts 5 and I 6 being preferably made of paper, papier mach or any other suitable material which will be of a clean and sanitary nature. The
sides forming the rim or flange 6 are taperedevery slightly so that after the device is pressed into position on the bottle, as shown, a positive frictional engagement exists to hold the closure against accidental displacement. The closure shown can be conveniently adapted for use as an advertising medium in that it provides suiiicient space for printing an advertisement thereon either upon the flat disk-like portion 5 or the rim 6.
In Fig. 4 I disclose a modified form of the device and in which the annular rim 6 is .crimpedto provide a series of corrugations i 7 which tend to contract the rim against the side of the bottle neck and beneath the usual bulged portion 8 of the bottle, thus more firmly holding the closure in place.
' Having thus described my invention, I claim: v
A device of the -class described, a closure for bottles comprising single piece of paper formed to provide a smooth flat disklike top, and asmooth depending annular rim, With" the top adapted to fit tightly against the entire top edge of the bottom and the rim snuglyencircling the adjacent neck portion thereof and frictionally engaging the neck, and a series of relatively spaced corrugations formed on the smooth depending annular rim at the lower edge thereof by gripping the same, with the rim depending inwardly at su-bstantiall its medial portion and at the points of ormation of the corrugation whereby said corrugation will bear tightly against the outer face of the neck. Fig. 31s a bottom plan v1ew of the closure;
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
