Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1916.
Application filed October 18, 1913. Serial No. 795,994.
To ZZ whom t may concern.' Be it known that I, i citizen of the United States, residing' at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York,,have invented certain 'new Nipples for Nursing-Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to nursing bottles for infants, and particularlyto certain useful improvements in nipples therefor.
. The invention contemplates the production of 'vice of this class consisting of a nipple, having among its objects the filtration of the liquid drawn therethrough, means whereby the nipple is readily adjusted upon the neck of the bottle, and finally an inelastic, sanitary and eflicient device which'can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a minimum cost.
The above and .additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in their preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended heretoA and form a part of this.
application.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is an elevation illustrating the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device as is illustrated in Fig. 1;,and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3lof Fig. 2.` c A Referring now to the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention the numeral l designates a bottle or -receptacle for infants food, preferably made of glass or other vitreous material, tothe neck of which a nipple desig nated as, anentirety by the numeral 2 is attached.
The nipple inv its preferred form is composed of some such non-elastic material as celluloid, and comprises the usual neck 3, body l and head 5, the latter having an outlet aperture .or opening@ formed therein through which the liquid is adapted to pass. At the base of the body 4 of the nipple, a
shoulder Y is formed, annular inshape, and4 disposed for engagement with the upper eX-- Acon SKYDEL, a-
and useful Improvements inan inexpensive and satisfactory detremity of the bottle 1. A constricted base 8 is formed in axial alinement with the nipple l2, the said base adapted to fitk or extend into the neck of the bottle l and to be embraced at a point adjacent the shoulder 7, by a suitable band 9, preferably of cork, the latter being disposed for engagement with the inner wall of the bottle neck to provide a securingmeans for the nipple as well as providing a means whereby the dispensation of the liquid contents cannot be effected other than 6 aforesaid. teriorly threaded as at 10 throughout a p0rtion of its length over which the interiorly threaded annular extension l1 of a semispherical perforated base 12 is arranged, the latter providing for the filtration of the liquid drawn from the bottle.
l The above being substantially a description of my invention, its use and operation are as follows The perforated base having been threaded or attached to the constricted base 8 of the nipple, and the cork band 9 arranged to embrace the said constricted base at a point above the threaded portion thereof,it is apparent that the nipple may then be attached to the bottle l in connection with which it is used. By forcing the said constricted base within the bottle neck,
(the cork band firmly engaging the inner wall of the bottle) until the shoulder 7 firmly engages the bottle top, a closure for the bottle is provided to preventthe escape of the liquid contents other than through the' opening 6 in the nipple head.
From the above, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is still further apparent thatv a sanitary and highly4 efiicient nipple is provided; that the peculiar formation of the filter 12 is such as to renderthe cleaning thereof facilitated; and
that by reason of the band 9 and shoulder 7, both being' forced into firm engagement with the bottle neck, a tight closure is` effected for the bottle, the said .band also providing an attaching or securing means for the nipple 2, whereby the sa me is maintained in operative relation with the bottle l until forcibly withdrawnv from engagement therewith.
lIt .will be understood that the above description and accompanying drawings comrehend only the general and preferred/emiiodiment of my invention, and that various minor changes in details of construction,
proportion and arrangement of parts may said body, the said base forming an annular be made Within the scope ofthe appended shoulder at the base of the said body, a semi- 20 claims and Without sacrificing any of the spherical filter detaohably carried by the advantages of my invention. said base, the said base and the said filter 5 Having thus fully describednmy inye'ntion, both fitting- Within the neck of the bottle, what, lf claim as new vand desire to secure and a band arranged to embrace the said by Letters Patent, is 1^- Y base above the said filter, said band and said 25 1.
