IMPROVEMENT IN RELlSHlNG-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,032, dated July 18, 1871.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, DAVID G. ARNOLD, of Winona, in the county ofBay and State of Michi gan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rest and Stop for Relishing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows my device attached to arelishing-machine. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the Fig. 3 is a section showing the stop and rest in position with relation to the end of a rail of a sash, door, or blind when in operation. Fig 4 is a detached view of the rest and stop in ordinary use. Fig. 5 is an end elevation, showing a section of rail, as above described, in relation to the ordinary rest and stop.

The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a rest and stop, to be employed with any relishing-machine, so arranged as to allow the cutters of said machine to cut away or relish so much of the tenon upon the end of a sash, door, or blind which is not designed to enter the mortise in the stile. \Vhere doors are coped in any form, such as ogee, half-round, or in any other form, the rest and stop, in ordinary use will not allow the cutters of the machine to cut any nearer the desired point than the thickness of the top of the rest, which is suiiicient for square work. The object, therefore, of this invention is to furnish a rest and stop which will allow the cutters to relish the tenon as far up as necessary to fit all coped work without the necessity of cutting away any part by hand. The invention consists inthe peculiar construction of a rest and stop for relishing-machines, which, while it will allow the cutters to relish square work equally as well as the rest and stop now in use, will at the same time allow the cutters to relish ogee, half-round, beveled, or other shapes in the manufacture of sash, doors, or blinds.

In the accompanying drawing, A represents a relishing-machine, which may be of any construction desired, and such as are in ordinary use; and B is a rest and stop properly secured to the table of the machine in any convenient way. This rest and stop has two opposite concave surfaces, to b, the former to receive the coped shoulder 0 of the tenon d. The tenon rests upon the top 0 of the rest and stop, and the coped shoulder enters the concave a, while the concave 1) allows the cutters to cut away or relish the tenon until that portion cut away will be on a line with the edges of the coped shoulders 0, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the tenon will fit into the corresponding mortise and rabbet in the stile. In Fig. 5 the ordinary rest is shown, which shows the tenon resting thereon and relished up to the rear side of the head or rest, leaving the part between the end as shown, and the shoulder of the tenon to be cut away by another operation.
