WILLIAM H. LINK, or SALISBURY,NORTHQRCAROLINA.
mmaao rnemy j To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. LINK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salisbury, in the county of Rowan and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mail-Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles, and has for an object to provide a recep-' tacle which is designed to be associated with a door or like structure wherein is provided a chute into which mail matter or packages may be introduced, the receptacle being dis posed in receiving proximity to the chute and having a portion thereon forming a combined deflector and guard to prevent the mail matter or packages from being thrown across the open end of the receptacle when they are passed through the chute under excessive force.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mail receptacle wherein the guard thereof is formed as a continuation of the movable front wall of the receptacle, the latter being so constructed that it may be adjusted to an inoperative position so as to give full access to the receptacle for the con i'enient withdrawal of the mail matter or packages.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of eral Views:Figure 1 is a Vertical section through a door showing the receptacle applied thereto, the name plate being shown in its closed position in full lines and in an open position in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. lshowing the front portion of the receptacle adjusted to an open position. Fig. 8 is a front view of a portion of the door illustrating the name plate.
For the purpose of illustration, the invention is combined with a door 1 in which is formed a downwardly and inwardly in' clined chute or passage 2 which opens at its outer end upon the outer surface of the door so as to allow for the insertion of the mail matter or packages thereinto. The outer end of the opening or chute 2 is embraced by a metal wear plate 8 which is apertured in line with the chute, as shown. The outer end of the chute is closed by a name or number plate 4 which is hinged to the door, at 5, at a point above the chute. This plate while serving as a closure for the chute so :Specincationof Letters Patent. .Patented Feb; 1, 1916,. Application filed February 25, 1914. Sei-ia11\To;'821,056
asto hold the latter against exposure to the ner side of the door 1, having its aperture disposed in line with the inner end ofthe chute 2 and arranged directly above the open upper end of the receptacle 7. This receptacle is provided with eye members 8 which are designed to receive the hooks 9 upon the plate 6. The receptacle is provided with an adjustable front wall 10 which is hinged, at 11, to the bottom of the receptacle. The front wall is curved upwardly and inwardly above the plane of the open end of the receptacle 7 so as to form a combined guard and deflector 12, the upper end of which is disposed slightly above the plane of the lower end of the chute 2. This guard is lo cated in the path of discharge of the letters or packages and it serves to guidethe same directly into the receptacle. In order that the guard can be operatively disposed above the open end of the receptacle and the front wall forming portion 10 of the guard susguard 12 it would be practically impossible,
for one to so insert and deflect letters or packages in the chute so as to cause them to pass across the upper open end of the receptacle and insure their properly entering the latter. With the provision of the guard 12, regardless of the angle of insertion or the path of travel of the mail matter or packages the latter will be positively introduced to the receptacle. When it is desired to remove the mail matter from the receptacle the keeper-pin 14 is disengaged from the guard 12 and the latter is then folded over and down to the full line position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. In this manner full access is gained to the receptacle. The front wall 10 of the recepta'cle 7 is foraminous or formed as a grating receptacle contains matter for collection.
I claim: 1. A plate to be secured at and around the inner end of a mail chute and provided with hooks at its lower side and with a securing device at its upper side, in combination with a mail receptacle having an inner wall provided with eyes for engagement with said hooks, said mail receptacle being open at its outer side and at its upper end, and an outer wall forthe mail receptacle hinged to, the bottom of theflatter' at its lower side and formed at its upper end with a guard to pass over the receptacle and above the inner I end of thechute and having detachable engagement with the securing device. of the plate.

In combination with a member having a mall chute, a plate to be secured to and around the inner end. of the chute, a mail receptacle having an inner Wall detachably connected to the lower side of the plate, said receptacle also having a pivotally n'iounted guard at its outer side arranged, when in closed position, to extend over the inner end of the chute, and detachably connected to the plate, at the upper side thereof. In testimony whereof I my signature in presence of, two witnesses.
