To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED W. RAUsKoLB, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident ofMedford, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Attachments for Metallic-Leaf-Stamping Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to attachments for stamping presses and has for its object the provision of means for automatically feed- I ing a ribbon or strip of metallic leaf which it is desired to apply to a surface to be ornamented. v A
The invention consists in -mechanism which may be attached to a stamping press of usual construction, said mechanism consisting of av roll of metallic leaf combined with means whereby subsequent to every stamping operation the ribbon or strip of metallic leaf in said roll will be fed a predetermined distance to bring a new portion of said metallic leaf beneath the die preparatory to another stamping operation.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 represents an elevation of a portion of a stamping press having secured thereto an attachment embodying the principles of the present invention, and Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section of the same, the cutting plane being on line 22 on Fig. 1.
Similar characters designate like parts throughout the drawings.
In the drawings, 10 is a bed or platen of a stamping press of any well-known construction. Above the platen 10 is positioned a die 11 -secured to av holder 12, said holder being formed upon a plunger 13 rovided with a roller '14 at its upper end. T is roller 14 engages with the periphery of a disk 15 eocentrically mounted upon the revoluble shaft 16' rotated by means of a pulley 17 in any well-kno-wn manner. A stud 18 extending laterally from the plunger 13 has securedthereto one end of a spring 19,;the
mounted in the end'of an arm 24 extendingv from the support 22 is a revoluble roll 25 carrying-a ribbon or strip of metallic leaf 26.. The plunger 13 has secured thereto by means of the set screw 27 a member 28- having a. curved extension 29 extending from one end thereofas indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The extension 29 has an arm- 30 projecting therefrom in' the'end of which is mounted a 'revolublefeed roll .31 over which the ribbon or strip of .metallic leaf 26 is adapted to pass. At the-extreme end of the extension 29 is apivot member 32 on which is mounted a downwardly extending arm 33 in the lower end of which is mounted a secondary feed roll 34. A spring 35 interposed between the feed rolls 31 and 34 retains the peripheries of these feed rolls normally mounted a lever 36 having a pin 37' in its outer end. On one end of this pin 37 is -mounted an actuating member'38 having a curved friction surface 39 normally contacting with the'periphery of the feed roll 31. Between one face of a disklike portion 40 at the outer end of the lever 36 and an adjacent face of the actuating member 38 is a friction disk 41. The pivot member 37 for the lever 36 and actuator 38 has threaded thereto the adjusting nuts 42 between which and the rear face of the actuator 38 isa spring 43 the tension of which is sufiicient to retain the disk portion 40 of the lever 36 and the hub of the actuator 38 in frictional contact with the friction disk 41 so that under normal conditions these members will operate together; The actuator 38 is pro- 45 therein lengthwise of which the pivot vided With a lateral arm 44 havinga slot member 46 may be adjusted and clamped in adjusted position by means of the clamping nut 47. This. pivot member 46 extends through one end of a link 48, the opposite end of which is pivoted at 49' to an arm 50 extending from the support 22. The lever 36 has a lateral pin 51 extending fronr one 2 but as the press itself forms no part of face thereof, which, under certain conditions, is adapted to engage with a lug 52 formed upon the extension 29.
The member 28 isprovided at opposite ends of the die 11 with downwardly extending studs 53 having bearings at the lower end for the revoluble ribbon supporting rollers 54. These rollers 54 are normally retainedbelow the surface of the die 11 by means of springs interposed between the flanges 56,0n the studs '53 and the under face of the member 28. The tension of the springs 55 may be adjusted by means of the nuts 57 Provision is made in the stamping press for heating the die 11 when in usip, t e present invention the heating devices are not shown. In the operation of the invention an article which it is desired to ornament is placed on the bed or platen 10, and, power being applied to the driving wheel 17, the shaft 16 isrotated and the plunger 13 is forced downwardly, the die 11 coming into contact with the metallic leaf and forcing it into contact with the work being operated upon. As the die moves upwardly away from the work, the tendency of the ribbon of metallic leaf 26 would be to adhere to said die and move upwardly therewith, but
this upward movement of the said ribbon or strip is prevented by the action of the springs 55 which separate the strip from the die. When the member 28 moves downwardly with the die the feed rollers 31 and 34 and the actuating member moves therewith. As the member 28 moves downwardly the link 48 securedto the support 50 will 'cause the arm 44 and lever 36 (frictionally held together) to swing about the pivot 32, thus removing the curved portion 39 of the actuator 38 from contact with the ribbon on the feed roll 31. The continued downward movement of the member 28-29 will cause the lug 52 to engage the pin 51 on the lever 36 and prevent further separation of the actuator 38 from the feed roll 31. In other words, after the lug 52 contacts with the pin 51 the relative positions of the axes of the.
pivots 32-37 will remain'unchanged during the further downward movement of the member 28-29 but the pivot 37 will be lowered relatively to the pivot 46 and during this lowering of the pivot 37 the actuator will be moved about the axis of this pivot 37 in the direction'of the arrow a on Fig. 1. When the die 11 and arm 29 is moved upwardly the actuator 38 swings on the pivot 32 until the feed roll 31 contacts with the curved portion 39 and .thereafter during the remainder of the upward movement of the arm- 29 the actuator will be moved about the pivot 37 in a direction opposite to that indicatedby the arrow a. By this means, when the-die 11 starts to move upwardly the actuator 38 is in position to engage with the cause the ribbon or strip permit the rollers feed roll 31 during the first ward movement of said die continued upward curved surface 39 will be moved into the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and of metallic leaf 26 to be fed across the surface of the die 11. The amount of feed of the ribbon may be predetermined by adjusting the pivot" 46 lengthwise of the slotted arm 44. When the die 11 moves downwardly into contact with the ribbon or strip of metallic leaf 26 it will force this ribbon into contact with the work to be ornamented. As the die starts on its return movementthe ribbon or strip is liable to adhere to the die and be lifted therewith, the springs 55 being of such a tension as to 54 to move slightly toward the member 28 until the tension of the springs has been increased sufficiently to remove the die without injuring said strip. By means of this attachment the material to be impressed upon the work is fed automatically and intermittently, and as soon as one impression has been made a new portion of the metallic leaf is fed beneath the die preparatory to another operation thereof.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of this invention will be fully apparent from the foregoing description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support secured to a stationary part of a stamping press provided with a reciprocating die holder; a roll revolubly part of the upand during the mounted on said support at one Side of said die holder and adapted to carry a ribbon or strip of metallic leaf; a member secured to and movable with the die holder; feeding rolls thereon oppositely disposed to said strip supporting roll; and means interposed between one of said feeding rolls and said support for rotating said roll a predetermined distance during each reciprocation of said die holder.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support secured to a stationary part of a stamping press having a vertically reciprocating die holder; a roll revolubly mounted on said support and adapted to carry a ribbon or strip of metallic leaf; a member secured to and movable with the die holder of the press; feeding rolls thereon; and means interposed between one of said rolls and said support for rotating said roll a predetermined distance during each upward movement of said die holder.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support secured to a fixed part of a stamping press having a reciprocating die holder; a revoluble roll on said support adapted to carry a ribbon or movement of the die the,
the strip of the metallic leaf from strip of metallic leaf; a member adapted to be secured to and movable with the die holder of said press; feed rolls carried thereby; an oscillating member carried by said member and engaging one of said feed rolls;
and a connection between said oscillating member and said support whereby said feed roll is rotated during each reciprocation of said die.
f. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a support secured to a' feed rolls carried thereby; an oscillating;
member carried by said member and engaging one of said feed rolls; and a connection between said oscillating member and said support whereby said feed roll is rotated during each upward movement of said die.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support secured to a fixed part of a stamping press having a reciprocating die holder; a revoluble roll on said support adapted to carry a ribbon or strip of metallic leaf; a member adapted to be secured to and movable with the die holder; feed rolls carried thereby; an oscillating member carried by said member and engaging-one of said feed rolls, said member having a lateral arm; and a link interposed between said arm and support. v
6. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support secured to a fixed part of a stamping press having a reciprocating die holder; a revoluble roll on said support adapted to carry a ribbon or strip of metallic leaf; a member adapted to be secured to and movable with the die holder; feed rolls carried thereby; an oscillating member carried by said member and engaging one of said feed rolls, said member having a lateral arm; 'a pivot member adjustable on said arm; and a link between said pivot and said support.
7 In a device of the character described,- the combination of a support secured to a fixed part of a stamping press having a reciprocating die holder; a revoluble 'roll thereon adapted to carry a ribbon or strip of metallic leaf; a member secured to the die holder; a revoluble feed roll thereon; an arm pivoted to said member; a secondary feed roller thereon; means for retaining said feed rolls normally in contact; a feed roll actuator carried by said member: and means interposed between said actuator and support to rotate the feed roll at each upward movement of said die.
8. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a support secured to a fixed part of a stamping press having a reciprocating die holder; a revoluble roll thereon adapted to carry a ribbon or strip of metallic leaf; a member secured to the die holder and provided with a projecting lug at its outer end; a revoluble feed roll thereon; an arm pivoted to sai member; a secondary feed roller thereon; means for retaining said feed rolls normally in contact; a lever pivoted .to said member and having a pin adapted to engage said lug; a feed roll actuator pivotally connected to the outer end of said lever; and a link between said actuator andsaid support.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a support secured to a fixed part of a stamping press having a reciprocating die holder; a revoluble roll thereon adapted to carry a ribbon or strip of metallic leaf; a member secured to the die holder and provided at its outer end with a projecting lug; a revoluble feed r011 thereon; an arm pivoted to said member; a secondary feed roller thereon; means for retaining said feed rolls normally in contact; a lever pivoted to said member and having a pin adapted to engage said lug; a feed roll actuator pivotally connected to the outer end of said lever; means for retaining said lever, and actuator ,in frictional contact;
anda link between said'actuator and said support.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a support secured to a fixed part of a stamping press having a reciprocating die holder; a revoluble roll thereon adapted to carry a ribbon or strip of metallic leaf; a member secured to they die holder and provided at its outer end with a projecting lug; a revoluble feed roll thereon; an arm pivoted to said member; a secondary feed roller thereon; means for retaining said feed rolls normally in contact; a'lever pivoted to said member and having a pin adapted t engage said lug; a feed roll actuator pivota ly connected to the outer end of said lever and having a curved surface adapted to contact with the material onsaid'feed roll; and-a. link between said actuator and said support. '-11. In a device-of the character described, the combination of a support secured to a stamping press; a roll revolubly mounted thereon and adapted to carry a ribbon or strip of metallic leaf; feeding mechanism for said ribbon; means controlled by the movement of the die for automatically opcrating said feeding mechanism and feeding said ribbon across the face of said die; and supporting rollers for said ribbon at opposite ends of said die.
12. In a device of the character described,
the combination of a support secured to a stamping press; a roll revolubly mounted thereon and adapted to carry a ribbon or strip "of metallic leaf; feeding mechanism for said ribbon; means controlled by the movement of the die for automatically operating said feeding mechanism and feeding said ribbon across the face of said die; yielding supports at opposite ends of said die; and revoluble rollers therein for supporting said ribbon.
